To be a secret Tory voter and feel embarrassed about it?

SecretToryVoter · 04/07/2024 12:41

I’ve just gone to do my vote and had to admit to myself that I’m one of those secret Tory voters and would be embarrassed to admit it to friends / family!

A month ago I was adamant that I would be voting Labour but ended up changing my mind for a number of reasons

  1. Keir seems to have a number of grand ideas of what he wants to do but no substance behind how he’s going to do it (where is he going to find an additional 6,500 teachers as just 1 example)
  2. Womens rights
  3. my Labour candidate has been helicoptered in and doesn’t look good on paper whereas the Tory candidate is a local, well respected councillor
  4. Tory policy is closer to my values overall

anyone else had to admit to themselves that they are a Tory at heart for this election?

I think that what Labour supporters could usefully have learned over the last 14 years is that shrieking "bigot!" or similar at people with opposing views is entirely counterproductive.

Where did I shout “bigot”? I didn’t did I.

I'd be ashamed too.

This is exactly why Tory voters don't tell people! The Left feel they have the right to be rude and denounce other people's views.

WellwellwellInever · 04/07/2024 17:03

That’s a brilliant way of looking at. Your mum is amazing.

Thank you. She is indeed amazing but I don't think she actually came up with the idea. I just can't remember the name of the person who did!Grin

And people on the right feel they have the right to generalise and exaggerate about people on the left. Plus call them ‘loony left’.

Not only that but its not consistent with the policies of Labour who are talking about making misogny a hate crime.

Yet there is this mentality that 'yeah thats fine she deserves it because she's a Tory'.

Its this hypocrisy that I very much dislike about the most militant labour supporters. Its toxic.

Most aren't like this, but it does seem to be a particular issue with certain parts of the left. I can't say I think its at a level which is better than the racism of the right.

NONE of it is ok.

Yes absolutely I completely agree. You will always get the minority who spoil it for the majority. I think the issue is that the small group of degenerates that do behave like this feel the need to be more vocal and scream and shout about it as if it makes their views more valid. It doesn’t. Sadly, I don’t believe this lies solely with politics but many matters in the world right now. The rest of us with more than two brain cells don’t feel the need to behave in such a manner and would never endorse it as it’s unjustifiable for any reason.

MsMoody · 04/07/2024 17:09

I don’t think the Tory track record on taxes or immigration mean we can call them right wing anymore! I’ll be voting for a party that I trust will spend my taxes for the good of the country, not their mates.

Soukmyfalafel · 04/07/2024 17:10

If that's how you want to vote its fine. They may well be the best candidate in your area. It's not just about letting Labour in.

I don't think Tories will win, but I do feel they will do better than expected as there are lots of secret Tories that are ashamed and will hold their nose and vote for them out there. If you have voted for Rishi more than your local candidate you may have been better off using it as bog roll instead though. Even HE doesn't want to be prime minister.

Admittedly I haven't fully read the thread, but I can see noone who has voted Tory being negative about people with opposing views, but, as is not surprising, plenty of the opposite.

EnjoyingTheSilence · 04/07/2024 17:13

I’d love to know what the tories have done for women

wellington77 · 04/07/2024 17:13

I vote conservative and am not embarrassed. You have to rise above it. I find people that try to get a reaction from me are people who think their party owns the moral high ground in this country. Very quick to say the tories are evils blah blah - an old trope which stops any kind of debate and learning from each other. Sad state of affairs. I’ve been accused of being homophobic for voting Tory before- ironic as I did quite a bit of experimenting when younger. It angers me people want to silence me.

Don't think she is necessarily referring to people on this thread - but we all know this happens...our media is disgusting in the way they encourage this...

"Loony" is that the last 14 years under Tory rule were allowed to happen. Idiotic overindulged lunatics, with more money than sense, chuckling over champagne in the middle of the covid lock down, while people lay dying alone. What a great result of private education that was.

Labour may not be perfect, but the Conservative party have had their turn, and it's been an absolute shitshow. They don't get to come back from this.

Countrydiary · 04/07/2024 17:15

So I’ll be completely honest and say I’m a Labour voter, but I am genuinely interested in the reasons for voting Tory. Apologies but I’ve seen lots of ‘I have my reasons’ on this thread or saying the don’t want to vote Tory because of Labour, or liking the local candidate, aside from that there are few concrete examples of why people vote Tory. Can anyone help with specifics that AREN’T about Trans rights please. I really want to learn!

Franzkafkascat · 04/07/2024 17:16

Boomer55 · 04/07/2024 16:50

I’d never tell anyone what to vote, but I don’t really get those still voting Tory.

We are in total shit order. Highest taxes since the war, nothing functioning or working properly, and endless Tory psychodramas.

I do get those voting Labour, LD, Green, Independent, or even Reform, but why would anyone, other than a political masochist, vote for more punishment?🤷‍♀️

Agreed.
Because the parlous state of the country hasn’t affected them. Until of course it does affect them or a loved one. But even then they’d rather blame the NHS or woke teachers than attack the saintly tories.
I do find it odd how thin skinned they are and how quick to play the ‘oh woe is me’ victim. And their obsession with Lefties being virtuous.
Their reluctance to admit to voting for the Tories is entirely because they know it’s a bad look, that it’s a vote completely in their own interests. That’s why they are ‘shy’ about it. I reckon that’s partially why the Tory party is in such a mess, because there’s always a steadfast minority that supports them, whatever. They never have to regroup and reconsider.

Well, it’s the nature of this thread isn’t it? I can assure you that people on the right are capable of being totally VILE about left wing voters. Loony, woke, snow flakes, unpatriotic, commies etc.

fungipie · 04/07/2024 17:16

oldwhyno · 04/07/2024 16:38

Good quality state education should be an option for everyone, but it isn't and this policy will not change that. Wealth buys privilege across society in myriad ways, and this policy just makes one aspect, education, more exclusive.

Why isn't it, is the big question here. It is a choice- a choice made by Conservatives, who so often can just escape via the private system, same for health care. There are many countries, and not at all 'left wing' - that have made the choice to provide good quality education for all- and the social divisions, and societal problems, are far fewer and far less marked. It is a poltical choice indeed. Why are most Conservatives not prepared to provide this- and in many ways, cut down the cost of this massive division, in 100s of ways.

Welk the Tories have had 15 years to solve that one. Perhaps Labour is worth a couple of months?

Ha ha, my point entirely.

Some of this is factual - most Tory voters are older... and that's not necessarily a negative thing to say.

Even the Tory's themselves admit they have problem attracting the youth vote!

Franzkafkascat · 04/07/2024 17:21

@cardibach yeah it’s a bit of a meme that the tories are polite and respectful all that British stiff upper lip. They are maybe superficially like that but in reality are as insulting and devious as everyone else, if not more so.

Haha, exactly this ^

The Tories have done nothing but drive the country into the ground, with the assistance of prime ministers we didn't vote in. They have clung to power at the cost to the public, and have had MP after MP defect. Let's see what Labour do, the man hasn't had a chance. Maybe sit and call the party who have ruined the country, and ask how on earth they would fix it?

sHREDDIES19 · 04/07/2024 17:26

cardibach · 04/07/2024 16:54

No, I vote in what I believe to be the interests of the country and those more vulnerable than I, not for my own self interest.

When you're not doing so well, vote for a better life for yourself.
If you are doing quite nicely, vote for a better life for others.

  • Irvine Welsh

If there are positive examples of things done by the Tories, list them. The only thing I can think of really is gay marriage, and they didn’t really want to do that.

I’m what they call politically homeless but will vote nonetheless based on what I feel is right for my constituency. I think we all have political leanings, but politicians often disappoint us and do not best represent the party they serve. So I don’t see any issue with being Conservative at heart but be dismayed at those leading the party. It’s noble to vote for the greater good but in reality most people decide based on how their life is going and whether they think it would be better or worse under a different party.

I do stand by my original point, Tories are often shy as many people are hostile of this standpoint.

Marchitectmummy · 04/07/2024 17:27

cardibach · 04/07/2024 16:57

I fundamentally disagree that this is the way to decide a vote. The vote should be what is best for the country as a whole. Now, people will disagree on what that is, so you’ll still get different parties (I disagreed with pretty much everything That her’s government did, for example, but I do believe she thought it was best for the country not just the Thatchers). It’s a new thing I think, created by the selfish current manifestation of the Tories, that makes people think politics is all about what you can get for yourself. Sad state of affairs.

And that's your right. What isn't your right is to tell me or anyone else what to do with my vote or the method I should use to decide on how to vote.

Your morals are amazing. Well done for caring about the masses more than yourself.
