My 5yr old bumped her leg running up some wooden steps. She's having trouble putting weight on it now and is quite upset.

Any advice much appreciated

My dh had a lump like this after he slipped when crowbarring a window frame out. It looked far worse than it was but thankfully not broken.

I'd be guided by my child in your case. If they aren't able to weight bear and are in a lot of pain I'd take them to a&e. If they are comfortable after some pain relief then I'd call your gp tomorrow morning. Our gp can refer to a gp X-ray department so hopefully yours can do the same.

I’d take her to the GP in the morning if she’s unable to weight bear. Not an a&e job in my opinion but I’m not a doctor.

WTF is a GP going to do? Prescribe her antibiotics?

She needs an X-ray and potential orthopaedic treatment. Take her to A&E.

Get her to A and E now! Can't believe you've come on here to ask that! Some people! 🙄

I'm not somebody who rushed to hospital with mine but twice I left them 2 days with sporting injuries that turned out to be fractures, however, they were initially able to walk on it (one walked home from school) but then the next day they were unable to walk on it. It did them no long term harm waiting til the next day (just mum shamed for life as worked in A & E for 20 years, they bring it up at regular intervals😂). The fact that it has improved would suggest to me that it's not fractured.......I would get some frozen peas on it though at least to reduce the swelling and if gets worse rather than better take her for an x-ray.

...and the GP will tell her to go to A&E to get an X-ray. Might as well skip the middle man.

Hopefully it's just a bump, kid's bony little legs can swell up and bruise something evil looking, but better to get it checked anyway.

She couldn't put weight on it at all at first. Now she is walking a bit but limping. I'm thinking about phoning the docfirst thing tomorrow? Does that make me bad?

I'd say she's fine. It looks like her shin? the shin is one of the strongest bones and it's usually very serious accidents they would break it.

Thank you all. Got her seen and she's fine. Still a bit swollen but it isn't bothering her at all.
