To find it so wearisome constantly being called the wrong name

I should be used to it by now and mostly am … but wrote my name down at a toddler group and was called the wrong name, just had a woman on the phone calling me the wrong name.

I know people will say to correct them but it makes no difference, they just keep calling you the wrong name. I know it’s my issue but it does get so annoying!

Is your name very unusual or similar to other names?

I'm sure people aren't doing it to be mean.

No of course people aren’t being mean but it does get you down after many decades of it!

Ok you know that we’re going to need to know what your name is…..

WishfulThunking · 02/07/2024 15:26

My name is a common one but it’s spelt wrong by almost everyone I know - drives me bananas but what can I do? 🤷‍♀️

namechanging24 · 02/07/2024 15:26

Same, I keep correcting people and they keep repeating back the wrong name
Even written down, people get it wrong
I'm so close to changing my name and it's not even a hard one, there's just a masculine and feminine version of it
And I'm a woman Sad

haveatye · 02/07/2024 15:28

I mean, my name is quite easily confused for another name. I just correct people.

My bigger problem is men with monosyllabic names. I can never remember who is Tom/Mark/Ben/Chris/Mat/James/Dom/Luke etc. like being with the apostles

BleachedJumper · 02/07/2024 15:28

Is it an unusual name/different culturally so people aren’t familiar?

or a situation where your name is Shannon but people call you Sharon?

It is quite unusual but it is a Shannon / Sharon thing. Very frustrating.

@loriginale customers, doctors, hospital appointments

I'm standing in front of them obvious female and get "Daniel?"
And I say "no, Danielle" and either get
Shitty look
"Oh sorry Daniel" it's fucking DANIELLE"

WetBandits · 02/07/2024 15:30

It’s really annoying! I had my name on a badge on placement when I was a student nurse (it’s a short, very common name!) and my mentor called me something completely different for 12 weeks. I corrected her each time, then moved to ignoring her when she still got it wrong, and she still called me Emily. Every day. Awful placement that was 😂

Itstherichthatgetthepleasureasusual · 02/07/2024 15:33

Oh I sympathise with you.

I much prefer to be called by the shortened form of my name. I hate my full name.I always tell people the shortened form when I meet them but so many just call me by my full name. It was a cause of real friction and upset with my own family who insisted on calling me by my full name.

In my opinion not calling someone by the name they have indicated they want to be known as or getting the name wrong is a matter of disrespect. It is as though people who can't even get your name right are telling you that you are not important enough for them to be bothered.

FictionalCharacter · 02/07/2024 15:33

Yes it’s annoying. Especially when you correct them again and again and they keep doing it.
Or my fave, I sign my emails as (similar to) Anna, my email address is AnnaCharacter @ whatever.com, they reply “Dear Anne”…. and persist in doing it even though I keep saying it’s Anna.

I know some people say they just can’t remember names, but surely if the name is right there in front of you in an email you should use that name!

socialdilemmawhattodo · 02/07/2024 15:34

I lived in the US for a while and my actual name is pronounced nic-o-la. Of course the French version is pronounced ni-col (silent e). I was called ny-cola for 3 years. Nicoles were never called Nycoles. And men of Italian origin always Nee-co-la which at least sounds closer! So I do feel your pain!

This wouldn't bother me tbh, I can usually tell when I'm being addressed.

It's not helpful though if say like I have you're in hospital and someone shouts "Daniel" instead of Danielle
I have no idea they mean me

RampantIvy · 02/07/2024 15:38

People often put an "in" in my surname. It doesn't work when everything is digital.

Eg Dickinson instead of Dickson.

You say it wouldn't bother you. So does that mean it never happens to you but you assume you wouldn't mind if it did?
Because you might feel differently if you had to put up with it constantly for years and years.
