To tell you all that I just unblocked my own ear and it feels AMAZING?

It's been blocked on and off since I had covid in 2021 😬

It gets worse every time I get a cold or my hayfever is bad, so I assumed it was a middle ear thing. Had a phone appointment with my GP about it when it first started and was advised to do steam inhalation and use otrivine nasal spray, so that's what I've been doing when it blocks and eventually it clears. My ears never seemed very waxy and due to it being linked to congestion I never thought it might be wax.

But about 3 weeks ago it blocked and just wouldn't unblock. I've been almost completely unable to hear from that ear since and it's been misery, so disorientating.

Anyway I thought in desperation last week to try wax removal just in case and got some bicarbonate of soda spray, when I tried it my ear literally fizzed and popped and seemed slightly clearer so I've been doing that twice daily for 5 days. This morning I thought I'd give it a rinse with a bulb thingy and some very slightly salty water and OMG the gak that came out 🤢 I thought it would never end, and then one really big stringy bit (like a ribbon of dead skin) came out and all of a sudden I could hear again and my head stopped feeling faintly swimmy. It took 3 x 500ml jugs of warm water (teaspoon of salt added to each) though, I was rinsing it for about 15 minutes til the water came out clear.

Everything is so loud! Its obviously been far worse than I realised for ages Blush

Once I get used to everything being so loud again I'm going to do the other ear, which I thought was unaffected but now this ear is properly clear I can tell that the other one is a bit blocked too.

God, that sounds blissful. I’m so jealous.

perenniallymessy · 01/07/2024 11:46

Ooh that sounds so satisfying! DS gets really badly blocked ears so I might try those ear drops- We've been using Otex type ones but I really hate the greasy feel of them.

Jewelanemone · 01/07/2024 11:47

Photo of the stuff!!!

I know this is disgusting but I really wish you could post a photo of the gunk that came out!

TeaMistress · 01/07/2024 12:03

It's a brilliant feeling. I has an appalling blocked ear which I used olive oil / otex drops on for about 10 days so It really softened the wax. I got a syringe kit from amazon with special quad tips and the amount of muck and gunge that came out was horrifying. Lovely to have crystal clear hearing back.

spiderlight · 01/07/2024 12:08

it's an amazing feeling, isn't it? I had a completely blocked ear for weeks last summer and it was miserable, but I got it microsuctioned and it was absolute bliss!

BrioNotBiro · 01/07/2024 12:10

This sounds are really stupid question OP, but would you know if you had blocked ears?

My hearing seems to have deteriorated but I don't know if it's just getting older. I'm not conscious of having any blockage. your treatment and result sounds brilliant!

SausageMonkey2 · 01/07/2024 12:11

What’s the “bulby thing”?

LakeTiticaca · 01/07/2024 12:12

We need a picture to appreciate it 😅

mjf981 · 01/07/2024 12:13

Oh I know the feeling!
The Dr syringed a wax plug my ear a while back and I went from almost deaf to perfect hearing within seconds. It was amazing!!

I had that done last year as one ear was badly blocked. Amazing is the word! I was so thrilled to be able hear again I actually danced around the treatment waving my arms in the air 😅

I could just tell. My ear felt like it needed to pop but wouldn't!

DS went for microsuctioning last year and the lady doing it was being very discrete with wiping the gunk away in a tissue, until we said that actually we'd quite like to see it all 😀 There was so much. She said every time he rammed his earbuds into his ear, he was compacting the wax together.

Copperkryten · 01/07/2024 12:29

Pic of bulb thing please

Poolstream · 01/07/2024 12:30

Dh gets waxy ears.
We use bicarbonate drops and then I use my dental water pick to remove the wax.
So satisfying.
Always spray water away from the ear drum.
Never directly as you could perforate the drum.

fancystrawberries · 01/07/2024 12:33

@Poolstream stupid question, how do you do that?

gmgnts · 01/07/2024 12:51

Well done! For those who can't manage it themselves, Spec Savers does ear syringing by appointment. The NHS no longer does it - I used to go to the GP practice nurse.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 01/07/2024 12:55

Oh I'm so jealous! Currently on the way to the airport and one ear is totally blocked. Not looking forward to the pressure changes.

Wondering what I can buy in boots at the airport to help.

Compash · 01/07/2024 12:58

Ear sporn... niche... I'm in heaven... 👂

Longsight2019 · 01/07/2024 12:59

You’ve made me want to paint my hand with PVA glue and try and let it set fully before peeling it off like a snake shedding its outer skin.

This is what I used when I had a totally blocked ear. I used a water syringe after about 3 days and it all washed out. Boots don't sell the syringes though so you might need to buy one from a chemist when you are there
