Is this a scam - if so, how?!

My DM wants a chest of drawers but is looking to get one on the cheap.

Marketplace on FB has been flooded with a certain type of advert for various bits of bedroom furniture. Brand new. Fully built, not flat pack. Many, many sellers. No link to website.

The ads all look slightly different but are recognisable as the basics are always the same. No specific price on the ad, cash on delivery, and free nationwide delivery. Usually lots of variants offered re colour/size. Often described as “FREE” but then says it’s not free.

The sellers of these furniture items on Marketplace all look a bit dubious. Typically relatively new accounts with lots of items of this brand new furniture for sale. Nothing else on their profiles. No track record of sales.

My question is: if it’s cash on delivery and free delivery, surely it’s not a scam?? How can it be??

Is it likely to just be really shit quality??

Personally I wouldn’t touch these sellers with a barge pole. However my DM has placed an order for one which is apparently being delivered tomorrow. She hasn’t clicked on any links (DP originally suggested it might be a way of phishing) and they haven’t asked for payment in advance.

It’s £99 for a large chest of drawers. Fully built. Cash on delivery. Free delivery.

I’m attaching photos of similar ads to show what I mean.

What do you think? Scam (but how??), poor quality item or amazing bargain??

AIBU to feel this is suspicious??

@SpidersAreShitheads will, you still be available, in the area tomorrow if they turn up with a van and chest of drawers and demand payment from DM?

I don't use the full Marketplace but particular local groups to sell/pass on in.

I did try a general Marketplace post once for a free item, but it was full of time wasters wanting to know if I would post the item (it was heavy, and free, so definitely not) and people who were too far away to collecf when I looked them up. I didn't give them my address.

IME it’s not a scam as in, they are selling furniture… just that it’s similar quality and price as say the cheap furniture from somewhere like Argos.

They could be seconds. I got a fantastic double oven and hob for 60 quid that had a v slight chip on it. Brand new but a reject

I think it’s highly unlikely that a legitimate company selling seconds would phone a customer ar 9.15 at night on a Saturday, or bring forward a weekday delivery to a Sunday instead - don’t you?
