Filthy Supermarket toilets

I can’t be the only person who finds supermarket toilets absolutely disgusting. Used some in a Sainsburys today, filthy beyond belief, stank of god knows what and the hand soap dispenser seemed to be filled with water, had those awful toilet paper dispensers you have to pinch out of instead of a normal roll.

Why are they all like this? Always warm/ stuffy too.

The mens are even worse according to DP. Disabled/ family toilets are always filthy too no matter which store you go to. I can let it slide if it’s a busy city store but when you’re in an allegedly middle class area and the cafe is outside the loo I just don’t get it.

Tesco - horrific
Sainsburys - horrific
Asda - wouldn’t even dream of trying
Morrisons - horrific
M&S - abysmal if it’s an older store

I used to work in retail with available toilets. Women, especially middle class seemingly posh women tend to hover and never flush.
The water limiters on toilet flushes mean the if its a 2/3 flusher, people don't wait for the cistern to fill to do a second flush.
Toilet roll is pinched as fast as you can fill it. Ditto for soap in dispensers, toilet seats ans weirdly urinal cakes. Who goes round taking used urinal cakes I don't know, but it happened frequently.
We cleaned and spot checked but staffing was cut to the minimum needed so we often had to close toilets when there was a "mess" rather than clean straight away....all adding to the smell.
The general public...even in nice areas, are shit!

I never ever sit down. Strong thighs are the way forward.

You are part of the problem...

Starseeking · 01/07/2024 07:38

I'm sure they are all sparkling clean when they first open for the day.

The issue is the people using them, who decide to leave them in a filthy state on exit.

pinkwaterbottle9 · 01/07/2024 07:41

They won't pay for the staff.
They need to be cleaned and checked hourly, but they won't pay for it.
So, they are obviously going to get very dirty and run out of supplies.

Bumblebeeinatree · 01/07/2024 07:43

Never had a problem with Tesco or Sainsbury's toilets, always clean. Motorway service stations always seem to have a cleaner in their cleaning, also good apart from missing toilet paper sometimes. Maybe it's time of day or pure luck/unluck.

Complain to head office. It works.

Pardon? Why do you say that? I choose not to sit but I can assure you I do not leave pee on the seat or floor. That would be foul wouldn't it?

PrincessHoneysuckle · 01/07/2024 07:57

Airport toilets are worse imo.
Mcdonalds are always spotless.

Unless you wipe the seat after there will be some of your urine on there, whether in visible droplets or not.

Sharontheodopolodous · 01/07/2024 08:36

I work in a mcdonalds
We have to check the loos every 15 minutes (which happens very roughly if we get busy)
It's the joke that we can check, everything's fine and go back 15 seconds later to the biggest mess ever
It's not us that leaves the mess-its the public
I've seen (and dealt with) some shocking states
Short of spending all shift in there,we can only do what we can do and trust me,we are very hot on keeping them nice for customers
The unwritten rule in the staff toilets is 'leave it how you'd want to find it'
We've only had one problem with that and she left after a few weeks

My local M&S is immaculate thankfully. That's disgusting!

Our M&S is clean but always stinks!

I can't really understand why women's loos have wee on the seats. Presumably as people hover because they don't want to sit down?

I'm also bemused by the number of women that leave the seat up (not the lid). It's about 50% of the time so are they standing up to wee like men?

Soldiers returning from war in the first half of the twentieth century, had a high rates of VD (STD). To reduce the stigma associated with this and encourage them to seek medical treatment, the authorities started a myth that VD could be contracted from toilet seats. As a result of this, women and girls were encouraged to "hover" rather than sit when urinating in a public loo. To avoid leaving urine splattered on the seat (which was still required when defecating), they would lift the toilet seat up before "hovering".

Many older women have done this all their lives, and still "hover" when urinating in a public loo - this is probably why you are finding the toilet seat left up in the ladies' loo.

Clean the seat with available toilet roll??

And the floor or wherever! It's not hard!

Surely you're not seriously suggesting that people should be prepared to clean the toilet seat, floor "and wherever" (walls? bowl?) of other people's urine/faeces/blood/vomit, using just toilet paper, before use? I don't think even the cleaners should have to do that on a regular basis, but at least they have gloves, cloths, mops etc to hand. Members of the public should not be expected to do it.

I can't understand why some people leave toilets in such a disgusting mess. Not fully flushed is one thing, but urine all over the floor? Poo smeared on the wall? Why? What has happened to normal human decency? Is there no consideration for the person who has to clean it up?

When I was a child, our town had a Superloo. It was a fully enclosed cubicle containing a toilet and washbasin. After every use, it would lock for a minute or two while it cleaned itself - toilet, sink and floor (if I remember correctly). Then it would be available again. Maybe we need to reintroduce them?

I'm a cleaner in a small sainsburys and we have 3 cleaning shifts. They get checked in the morning but won't get cleaned again until my evening shift. The general public are vile. How they can shit all over the back of a toilet seat I have no idea, or piss all over the floor

Aaah, it’s you weeing all over the seat, then!

Working class people are a lot cleaner and house proud and more likely to shop in Asda and Lidl.

Haha. Of course they are 😏

Pottedpalm · 01/07/2024 14:43

Waitrose toilets pretty good here, M&S no issues and usually a cleaner in and out all the time.
Tesco utterly disgusting.
Worst ever were toilets in A&E at local hospital. Three unisex cubicles, one had no lock, one so filthy no-one would use it and the third had floor covered in pee-soaked tissues and stank.
Patients reporting the situation were told there were no cleaners on at night.

WhySoManySocks · 01/07/2024 14:50

I was with you until “I can let it slide if it’s a busy city store but when you’re in an allegedly middle class area”. Yucky attitude.

I recently had to spend 10 hours in A&E with my wife, from 5.30 pm till 3.30 am, when she was moved to a bed. It was very crowded in A&E, and I specifically noticed a cleaner coming round every hour to clean the toilets. That's the way it should be. Please note I am in Canada.

Pretty shocking the state some people are happy to leave toilets. It costs nothing to give the toilet a quick wipe if you've made a mess and to ensure you've flushed properly. If there's no toilet roll left/flush doesn't work then inform a staff member, otherwise it could be hours for it to be resolved. And don't fucking hover over the toilet seat - people are generally worse at it than they imagine and just leave a mess everywhere. As for people smearing their blood/shit/piss on the walls, I can only imagine they're deranged and no amount of scolding will solve that problem...

Pretty sure I always leave the toilets in a cleaner state than they were when I went in! Good to carry a bit of antibac and a few spare tissues with you just in case there's no roll/you need to give the seat a quick clean/there's no soap or running water (although frustrating that it even needs to be done).

I don't think it's necessarily about cost cutting, mostly poor customer behaviour and entitlement. Although I do like the idea of having a toilet attendant on standby who tells people off for leaving a foul mess behind, maybe then they'll learn!
