Filthy Supermarket toilets

I can’t be the only person who finds supermarket toilets absolutely disgusting. Used some in a Sainsburys today, filthy beyond belief, stank of god knows what and the hand soap dispenser seemed to be filled with water, had those awful toilet paper dispensers you have to pinch out of instead of a normal roll.

Why are they all like this? Always warm/ stuffy too.

The mens are even worse according to DP. Disabled/ family toilets are always filthy too no matter which store you go to. I can let it slide if it’s a busy city store but when you’re in an allegedly middle class area and the cafe is outside the loo I just don’t get it.

Tesco - horrific
Sainsburys - horrific
Asda - wouldn’t even dream of trying
Morrisons - horrific
M&S - abysmal if it’s an older store

They are grim, I pray my kids don't need the loo when we are in the supermarket. My youngest will always need the toilet at the most inconvenient time and we have to squeeze into a cubicle sometimes nowhere to hang my bag and try to manoeuvre to help him with toilet roll all the while telling him
NOT to touch the toilet seat.

TimeGoesBySoSlowlyForThoseWhoWait · 30/06/2024 00:01

Disposable toilet seat covers are your friend. My friend uses them and I wasn’t convinced but am now a convert. Other counties it would be abnormal to not use them. Bonkers to want to put your arse against something having just touched someone else arse.

Funny though, Lidl and Aldi loos are ALWAYS sparkling, never stink (in fact one near me has a lovely jasmine scent sprayed every 30 mins or so) and are very accessible.
On the other hand M&S and Sainsbury’s are utterly disgusting and makes me pity for the future of the human race.
makes you think when these “discount” stores are doing their toilet cleaning right whilst the typical old school shops arent…

Working class people are a lot cleaner and house proud and more likely to shop in Asda and Lidl.

PurpleyDog · 30/06/2024 00:06

I actually wondered if you live by me when I saw your title and when you posted, but my Sainsbury’s toilets were worse yday.

Took DS in as he needed to go. Pregnancy test wrappers by the sink, used condom on the floor behind the door, pee all over the toilet seat and I think all around the floor, soap dispenser than was empty, a leaking tap. It was horrible! Never seen such vile toilets in a supermarket before.

Haven't used one for ages but was not clean the last time I did
Always warm and smelly Envy
How can people make so much mess just going for a wee?!

ElizaMulvil · 30/06/2024 00:21

OTOH Sheffield Bus station loos immaculate. St Pancras / Kings Cross stations' ones OK. Golders Green bus station ones good too ( usually.)

Goingasteady30 · 30/06/2024 00:42

The amount of bums using toilets in a supermarket must be a lot. Far more usage than your average loo at home gets. Keeping them clean must be like the old painting the fourth bridge adage.

TippedOverTheGravyJug · 30/06/2024 01:03

Our aldi and lidl ones are clean and fresh.
Sainsburys always stink , appear cleanish- both local ones
M&S grim
Tesco OK ish
ASDA well the smell is by far the worst

Monty27 · 30/06/2024 05:55

I've had to use them and omg they're always vile. Including Waitrose in a very naice area. Tesco gave up and shut theirs.
I don't go to supermarkets much these days.

AGodawfulsmallaffair · 30/06/2024 05:59

OhHelloMiss · 29/06/2024 21:57

Clean the seat with available toilet roll??

And the floor or wherever! It's not hard!

Exactly. People are pigs. I’d HATE to clean public loos and that’s not what the staff are for. Having said that, I’ve never been in a filthy supermarket loo. Guess I’m lucky.

shearwater2 · 30/06/2024 06:04

Supermarkets should pay toilet attendants to check and clean them. I've been in very good public toilets. They are good because they are well maintained.

NeverEnoughPants · 30/06/2024 06:12

The loos in my local Tesco are absolutely fine. I've been in much worse. I don't know about my nearest Morrisons, as it's in a centre. I always use the centres toilets.

I think you have been very unlucky in your experiences op.

MangoJojo · 30/06/2024 06:23

I agree and would like to add another location. Not a supermarket but I think it’s worse - Costa. Every Costa I have ever been to has the most revolting toilets. Everything is always just wet 🤮
I get they don’t employ cleaning staff throughout the day and it’s the customers who make it gross, but they’re always just especially grim.

Luxell934 · 30/06/2024 06:25

I’ve been in M&S and Asdas recently and both grim. I find service station ones better as there’s usually an attendant there all the time.

dottydodah · 30/06/2024 06:34

The SB near us has a rota on the wall of time.date last cleaned .Usually clean as a whistle!

Justleaveitblankthen · 30/06/2024 06:44

Everytime I went into my Tesco superstore ones, there was the very telling smell of recently flushed Diarrhoea coming from an end toilet. 🤢
It happened so often I began to wonder if it was the same unfortunate staff member.

There are always staff in the Asda and Tesco ones using them when I do.
You'd think they would report issues.

You can definitely go to any staff member or customer services to report.

CoastalCalm · 30/06/2024 06:45

I would and have complained to store manager in the past

blue345 · 30/06/2024 06:46

I can't really understand why women's loos have wee on the seats. Presumably as people hover because they don't want to sit down?

I'm also bemused by the number of women that leave the seat up (not the lid). It's about 50% of the time so are they standing up to wee like men?

justasking111 · 30/06/2024 07:07

I can't understand how women's toilets have wee on the floor.

MoltenLasagne · 30/06/2024 07:16

The problem is they're not cleaned often enough for the foot traffic. Think of a family home. A family of four with one toilet - probably a max of 16 visits a day when everyone is home. A public toilet can easily get that in 30 minutes.

Cleaning, actual cleaning not just restocking loo roll, every 2 hrs should be a minimum. In large stores there ought to be a specific cleaner properly paid, it's not like there aren't enough areas to clean if the toilets remain pristine. But supermarkets cheap out and expect staff to do it as part of their other jobs and then act surprised thay they're not up to standard.

And as for blaming the public, yes obviously other customers are causing the mess, but previously businesses used to take account of what was happening and adjust for it, not just shrug their shoulders like they were being asked to change the weather.

luckylavender · 30/06/2024 07:17

I can't remember the last time I went to the toilet in a supermarket.

Apparently the barista (s) has to clean the loo when it’s quiet. I can imagine that’s the least popular part of the job and so gets ignored till end of day. Tbh I’d rather not have my coffee made by someone who has just cleaned the loo anyway.

I can't remember the last time I went to the toilet in a supermarket.

That's nice dear

GoofyGoldie · 30/06/2024 09:57

I very rarely go in a supermarket these days as we have shopping delivered. But last night we popped into Tesco & I needed the loo.
OMG, they were disgusting. Plus there was a man who sounded drunk shouting in the men's, which he only started as I walked past. There's no door on the entrance part to the toilets but you can't really see in so it was probably coincidence he started shouting then. There was no-one else around, I have to walk with a stick now & I felt quite vulnerable.
It was 7pm so maybe the toilets don't get checked later in the day, but out of 5 cubicles only 1 was usable.
