Whatever happened to Saturday morning Tv for kids/teens?

Just sat here and Dd watching CBeebies, looking at other channels it dawned on me-where are the kids/teens shows?
I grew up watching Saturday morning cartoons, then Going Live, Wacaday, Live & kicking (was that the name?) Gem (truly outrageous) then later on, Smtv. There was also music shows on C4 etc…looking now, it’s all cookery shows, what do the kids watch on Saturday mornings, if anything?

I have freeview and bbc iplayer on my TV. My son watches children’s television channels on TV and specific things he likes on iplayer. He also likes to watch things on iplayer on his Amazon fire kids tablet.

On Freeview, the channels for children’s channels are:
CBBC - 0201
Cbeebies - 0202
CITV - 0203
CBBC HD - 0204
Cbeebies HD - 0205
Pop Up - 0206
Tiny Pop - 0207
Pop - 0208
Ketchup Kids - 0211

@Gelasring But where is Cbbc? I can’t see any kids shows/channels on normal tv, aside from
Cbeebies and Dd gets bored of that as she’s getting a little older now (almost 6)

Do they still have Milkshake on Chan 5? I used to sometimes put that on before school for DD when she was little.

Needmorelego · 29/06/2024 20:13

@Riversideandrelax yep Milkshake is still on (still with Peppa Blimmin Pig 🐷).

Not live TV, no. It's all done on streaming services or apps.

We don't even have access to live TV anymore, we just watch everything online.

We are the same. We moved into a house with no aerial two tears ago and have not got one. We can possibly get the live channels on the box thingmy, but we rarely watch tv. We watch stuff online and dc game a bit.

I never liked mine watching Peppa Pig. Peppa is a brat and horrible to her little brother! I liked them watching Charlie and Lola as Charlie was so kind to Lola!

I found out recently that you can watch live TV on iPlayer. We stopped having live TV a few years ago when we got a new TV that had no connection for it. But the one thing I missed was the count down and fireworks at New Year. We watched it on iPlayer this year!

@Riversideandrelax Charlie had the patience of a saint when it came to Lola 🤣

SomePosters · 29/06/2024 20:27

The internet

autienotnaughty · 29/06/2024 22:02

I remember ITV doing Saturday morning tv. Channel 4 did American sitcoms. Think bbc was sport and songs of praise.

But there are cartoon on tv on a Saturday morning. Channel 5 does milkshake. And c4 has cartoons.

Thevelvelletes · 29/06/2024 22:04

Swap shop and tiswas.

FrivolousKitchenRollUse · 30/06/2024 13:29

I guess they will never experience an iconic moment like Sarah Greene telling someone off for swearing at Five Star...

He did! 😂

Scribblydoo · 30/06/2024 13:46

The internet went down and DD1 explained to DD2 that it was like the olden days and they'd just have to watch what came on. So stoic in the face of adversity

whiteboardking · 30/06/2024 13:49

@Gooddaymatey kids now have no concept of actually watching stuff 'when it's on'. They watch what they want when they want it. No live shows now

Ilovecakey · 30/06/2024 14:10

I was just saying a similar thing myself the other day but about how after school there's no kids TV programmes anymore. Like when I was a kid from 3 o clock on channel 1 and 3 there would be loads if kids programmes like fun house, tots TV, byker Grove, Bernard's watch, the queen's nose etc.

Needmorelego · 30/06/2024 15:56

@Ilovecakey CBBC does have a lot of very good drama shows still being made.
(There's whole threads on Mumsnet about the Malory Towers series 🙂).
Here's today's schedule.

There was never a time when Channel 4 was on the air, ITV had a Saturday kids schedule and the BBC didn't. (Maybe during Olympics/Commonwealth games, for a couple of weeks.)

And Songs of Praise was always on Sunday, and not in the mornings.

Justleaveitblankthen · 30/06/2024 21:39

Ah, I used to set my alarm for Swap Shop and Tiswas.
Had to keep switching over as they clashed.
Tiswas usually won 😂
