To dislike the tradition of baking your own birthday cake?

Rizzo8 · 28/06/2024 18:49

I say this because I used to live in Spain where it was expected that you would bake your own cake.

Now I have a partner who does the same because he comes from a Nordic country where it's also the norm. We have discussed moving there and one of my main gripes is the thought of a lifetime of baking my own cake!

No matter how chaotic life is my birthday is one day where people spoil me with a nice meal/cake/event. I do the same for others
Essentially where I have to worry about nothing. Am I being a grumpy for thinking this way?

Just don’t have cake 🤷🏽‍♀️

AGodawfulsmallaffair · 28/06/2024 18:50

Well don’t then, just buy one.

Rizzo8 · 28/06/2024 18:51

The point is you're supposed to provide the cake full stop. Not just bake it.

very very very odd OP

that you feel under extreme pressure to bake your own cake

i have never baked my own children a birthday cake let alone… myself

woman up

Amazondeliverydriver · 28/06/2024 18:52

On a slightly different note, but similar, what’s with taking your own cakes into work when it’s your birthday, or when you’re leaving a job? I never understood that either.
I’m with you OP.

Edited

in what scenario? a party ? or just wander around with a cake offering it to people?

Rizzo8 · 28/06/2024 18:53

Yes but isn't that because you live in UK @trextape ?

I'm talking about cultural norms in other countries.

It's not a legal requirement though.

If you don't want to go live in another country then dont go. But for fucks sake dont say you're not going because you might be expected to provided a cake. You'll sound like a loon.

i have never felt under even the TINIEST pressure to bake my own birthday cake or leaving a job cake!!!

Needmorelego · 28/06/2024 18:54

At least you'd get a cake that's your favourite type.
Still a bit disappointed my wedding cake was a sponge and not fruit cake.
Although admittedly I left the wedding organising to everyone else 🤣🤣

Lifelessordinary1 · 28/06/2024 18:54

Just buy one and say it's traditional in UK.

So you tell friends and family it's not your tradition from your country so your husband DP will buy one as he would here!

oh come on… I lived in spain for 4 years. No one under the age of 60 seriously expects you to bake your own birthday cake.

are you hosting a party?

Grumblegore · 28/06/2024 18:55

I love it! I’m so fussy with cake I prefer to organise my own on my birthday. But I love baking /ordering cakes 😂

although friends have surprised me sometimes with lovely cakes and I really appreciated the thought behind it tbh I still prefer to provide my own.

That said, I’d hope if it was a big issue for me that my partner would sort the cake out though. You don’t need to be follow every single part of the culture you live in surely? Do what works for you/your household.

Yes, cultural norms, not law.

Just buy cake.

trextape · 28/06/2024 18:56

op you “used to live in spain”

so… where do you live now?

Icanttakethisanymore · 28/06/2024 18:56

You’re considering not moving to a specific country because you would have to bake your own cake? Are you drunk? This can’t be serious.

Bjorkdidit · 28/06/2024 18:56

You could just do it your way, wherever you live.

When it's your birthday he bakes you a cake and you do the same for him on his birthday.

You'll have to keep it quiet from the Birthday Police but at least it means you get to enjoy being treated on your birthday.

trextape · 28/06/2024 18:57

according to your thread the other day… you live in the UK OP!

Rizzo8 · 28/06/2024 18:59

Yes I do live in the UK...but considering a move.

This isnt a very serious thread of course! It's just something I hated doing before in Spain and something I wouldn't like to do again. It's a firm family tradition with DP and his parents etc.

I was curious to hear others thoughts.

If they make you, just do what Minnie did in The Help. That'll teach em.

More fool you for doing it when you were in Spain then 🤷‍♂️

mathanxiety · 28/06/2024 19:01

I always bake my own cake. Sometimes I use a box mix. Sometimes I bake from scratch. It's just cake.

I bake a cake for everyone else in the family too. One year, i went all out and reproduced a cake I saw on Pinterest, with sugar paste pigs wallowing in chocolate mud on top. The recipient felt bad about eating the pig that came with her slice.
