Been a regular for a year. Doing kettlebells, HIT and body tone. Not lost 1 pound and I don't feel different so why am I going

You can't lose weight just by going to the gym, you need a calorie deficit. Have you increased your difficulty levels? I.e. increased the duration and size of the weights/increased cardio times and levels over the year?

EmpressaurusDeiGatti · 28/06/2024 14:46

Is it worth having a session with one of the gym’s personal trainers & getting some advice? Mine helps with nutrition as well as exercise.

Yeah to all. I eat 1300 calories a day.

I think each one gives different advice so I get confused with what I'm meant to do !

It's probably stopped you gaining any weight.

spikeandbuffy · 28/06/2024 14:48

It's good for your heart, lungs, bones, mental health...

It's clearly not for you. You're either not able to go for long enough or frequently enough, and are clearly not burning enough calories for weight loss.
Just quit. Think of other activities you might enjoy more. Team sports, boxing, swimming, martial arts, pilates? Or just plain old jogging round the block.
You could use an outdoor gym in the park and have a trainer once a week, if that would focus you more?
If you're only eating that little maybe you actually need more calories as your body might be holding onto them?

FlowersAndFairiesAndPie · 28/06/2024 14:50

I go to classes between 30 and 60 minutes 3 to 4 times a week and dog walks in between

The first one I talked to was frankly a bit bonkers but then I signed up with a woman my age, who’s been brilliant. I have a session with her once a month to keep me on track & discuss what is & isn’t working.

AstonMartha · 28/06/2024 14:52

What was your aim when you joined the gym?

If it was losing weight then you are in the wrong place. You can change your shape but to lose weight you need to be in the kitchen.

I love the gym because of the effect it has on my mental health.

What classes are you doing?

ilovesooty · 28/06/2024 14:53

Do you enjoy it? Can you afford it?

If either of those is a no it's not a hard decision.

OneTC · 28/06/2024 14:54

At this point you're better off with measurements than with checking weight

Snowpaw · 28/06/2024 14:54

Do you get any mental benefit from going? I go to the gym because it makes me feel good and I am a calmer and more friendly person from going there. I don't weigh myself. My clothes look better on me for building muscle though.

you gain muscle that’s why you haven’t lost weight but it’s good for your general fitness and mental health well done for keeping up with it

unbelievablescenes · 28/06/2024 14:56

Something's going wrong here. Either you're eating more calories than you think or your exercise intensity is low or you have a medical problem. At 1300 cals a day and all that exercise you'd be losing something or at least toning up. It's simple biology, calories in less than calories out you lose weight. If you're not losing weight the balance is wrong.

unbelievablescenes · 28/06/2024 14:58

I've been going 8 months and I've lost no weight but gained 2kg muscle mass and I'm heaps fitter. Can see visible definition in my muscles, body shape noticeably different

VelvetBow · 28/06/2024 15:00

I'm willing to bet money you are not weighing your food every meal and therefore you're eating far more than 1300 calories without knowing it.

Hermittrismegistus · 28/06/2024 15:01

You're gaining weight on 1300 calls per day and the gym? You must either be underestimating what you eat/how much exercise you do or you have some medical issue.

How much have you gained over the year?

DrBeatt · 28/06/2024 15:02

I am similar OP
I have been a regular (4-5 days a week - legs, push, pull and steady state cardio) gym goer for about 5 years but you’d never know
I have 30% body fat has not shifted at all
my trainer was baffled that I never lost weight - he would look at what I was recording eating

I also manage 10k steps everyday

the only reason I continue is it gets me out of the house, it’s really demotivating, i totally get you

nomchonge1 · 28/06/2024 15:05

you need to get your thyroid checked

PardonMee · 28/06/2024 15:05

Weigh food, do exercise you enjoy, walk 10k in addition. Your health will be better

ManchesterLu · 28/06/2024 15:05

Sorry, but there's something not right there. 1,300 calories is less than your body burns per day with ZERO exercise, never mind going to the gym as well.

The only solution is that you're vastly underestimating the calories you're eating.
