Do you think all ladies’ trousers, shorts etc have pockets

All men’s do.

Suffering from hay fever and gone out for the night. Realised that after blowing my nose that my trousers don’t have a pocket to put hankie in.

Absolutely agree that more pockets in everything are required. I walk the dog and have to take a bloody bum bag, because I need to keep my car keys zipped up and my phone and the poo bags need to go somewhere, and the dogs ball when it’s time to walk on the roads.

if I get a coat (usually a branded hiking or skiing one) with zip up pockets on the outside, inside and breast I’m absolutely ecstatic.

When you buy pants, you can choose ones with pockets.

Sounds like a completely different jacket. Couldn't you have bought the same one as the men? Didnt you check it had a hood and pockets first?

The concept and look of it was the same I saw it didn't have a hood when i bought it, but I didn't realise theirs had inside pockets til later.
I am pretty small , a man's one would have been too big.

Lilacapples · 28/06/2024 08:04

You answered your own question! Clearly they don’t all have pockets if the ones you were wearing didn’t 😂

JohnnySoda · 28/06/2024 08:04

Loads of people run in my local park, the women all wear leggings and have their phone, keys and whatever else strapped to their arm, chest or waist in some sort of holder or bag. Looks cumbersome and faffy.

The men of course are just in shorts and top with all their stuff in their massive pockets.

I was jealous so got some men's shorts for my runs and it's so much better.

There's absolutely no reason why they can't make exercise clothes with decent pockets for women, but they seem hard to find.

Emmerald · 28/06/2024 08:05

Not only pockets, but some ladies jogger bottoms have a fake drawstring too! I mentioned to my partner that my joggers were slipping down as they're now too big after losing weight (yay!) and he said "tie the drawstring tighter" looking at me as if I were a dimwit. I showed him the fake drawstring on the front and he couldn't believe it. I've now threaded a drawstring through the waistband (it's a fairly old pair that I only wear gardening) but I shouldn't have to.

I now reject any new clothes without pockets and/or drawstrings!

Easier not to use them or to sew them up than add them in, therefore I think the default should be pockets.

Edited

But why do we need a "default"? Surely we can just have a range of styles, some with pockets, some not, and let market demand decide?

The pocket debate annoys me. I don't buy mens clothes with all their extra features because they are fussy and it bothers me to have extra fabric , and carrying things in pockets rather than a bag means people lose keys etc all the time. Im always hearing stuff about men taking stuff out of pockets and putting them down and then losing keys etc
Get a bag

Absolutely. I think some people have elevated the debate to some kind of feminist stance they feel they ought to take. Just buy styles with pockets, there are plenty around these days. Personally I choose trousers without pockets because that's what I prefer. And presumably so do other people because they're still for sale.

MyLordWizardKing · 28/06/2024 08:14

I only buy clothes with pockets now. It's fair enough if some women don't want them at all, but I struggle to understand the point of those fake pocket flaps that they put on some clothes. Why?!

missshilling · 28/06/2024 08:15

I want the choice. I usually cut pockets out and sew up the openings.

DexaVooveQhodu · 28/06/2024 08:15

Yanbu that pockets are necessary but yabu to not have checked the pockets when you bought the clothing. I also check the size of the pockets after last year discovering that I had bought some jeans with teensy tiny pockets only big enough for a tissue so I couldn't put my phone and keys in them - I made larger pockets out of an old pillow and sewed them in.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 28/06/2024 08:22

Its not just trousers and skirts that are lacking, Mens jackets will always have a nice inside pocket and usually outer pockets too, I've bought expensive ladies jackets with none.

Check inside the coat to see if there is actually a pocket that's lightly-sewn shut. Often coats are sold with pockets sewn shut so that those who value a smooth clothing drape over their body as more important than practical usefulness don't have the hassle of sewing them up as e.g. @missshilling does - easier for those who like pockets to cut a few loose threads than for those who don't to have to sew them up.

This was standard practice for so long that I'm not surprised if an ultra-cheap fashion store puts "fake" pockets on that make it look like they have bothered with this thoughtful option but actually haven't

JaninaDuszejko · 28/06/2024 08:25

I have the two pairs of trousers from Gap, same style but different colours. The navy trousers have functional pockets, the black pair have pockets that are 3 cm deep. Even when you think you are buying trousers with pockets you don't always get them, women's clothes often have fake pockets and with a few honourable exceptions most websites don't allow you to search for functional pockets. A range of styles is only as useful as the search engine on the website.

For those people who want to know why we want pockets rather than using a bag, when I'm at work I want to be able to walk around my building without having to carry a large tote bag (required to carry laptop to work) everywhere. If I don't have pockets when at work where do I carry my phone, where do I put a tampon or pad when I go to the toilet, where do I put a packet of cough sweets or hankies when I go to a meeting, where do I put a debit card when I go to the cafe? I don't want to carry my big bag around the building every time I go to the loo / cafe / meeting room, the men don't have to do it so I shouldn't either.

LifeofBrienne · 28/06/2024 08:27

I do like pockets, even in floaty summer dresses where they aren’t very practical for carrying stuff as the material is so light.
But at least it’s possible to see before you buy if something has no pockets. What I would ban if I could are micro pockets that fit about half of a small mobile phone. It’s like a joke at the expense of the wearer.

DampDust · 28/06/2024 08:28

Why do babies clothes have pockets? What do they put in them?

EBearhug · 28/06/2024 08:35

I think some people have elevated the debate to some kind of feminist stance they feel they ought to take.

It's feminist because men simply don't have to spend time thinking about this. They have pockets by default. They have the option of not using them, of taking a bag instead, but they have pockets. Women are spending much more time finding clothes that do have poclets just because we can't take them for granted like men can.

When clothes manufacturers don't put pockets in, or put pathetically small ones in, it's usually because of cost cutting more than style. Men's clothing is usually better made than women's for the same outlets, too.

Clothing is a feminist issue.

ClockworkDisaster · 28/06/2024 08:49

Yes this drives me mad. I am not a handbag kinda girl. I am not girly, I have no interest in handbags, they annoy me when they sway around or hurt my shoulders. All I want is a couple of proper pockets to put my phone and keys in. That’s all I have on me 99% of the time. Not enough to warrant a bag. So I refuse to buy clothes which don’t have decent pockets now. Which means I often end up wearing the same thing over and over again as it seems such an uneven split between trousers with good pockets and trousers with no/useless pockets. So if I find a pair of comfortable trousers with pockets I buy several identical pairs. I’m sure my colleagues think I only have one pair of trousers at times lol.

I have taken to wearing a slimline bumbag designed for runners in the summer. You can fit it under your top and it can’t be seen but is big enough for your phone and keys if you need it.

I tend to buy men’s fleeces as they come not only with pockets but most of the time zippable ones. So winter is ok, it’s just summer that is a nightmare.

Oh and men’s PJs are good if you want pockets.

Pocketed clothes for women are easily available though as are non pocketed clothes.
Theyre not even hard to find.
The pocket lovers seem to want all clothes to have massive pockets, rather than just checking out the clothes they buy for suitability rather than mindlessly picking it off the rack.
There is already SO MUCH choice in clothing styles and shops now.
We have choices. Even mens clothes dont all have massive pockets, but they do admittedly often have deeper pockets, deeper zips, less fitted shapes.

Take care about the items you choose to make sure theyre suitable and avoid fast fashion and im sure youll be fine

Because men's clothes have pockets as a default.

Like @JaninaDuszejko , I don't want to lug a bag to me if only nipping to the loo or to the water fountain, but I don't wish to leave everything unattended.

HowIrresponsible · 28/06/2024 11:27

I don't know I've not seen every pair of them that exist

VoteLabour · 28/06/2024 11:37

We shouldn't need to buy men's clothes or bumbags. I'm a short size 8 so I'd be wearing boys' clothes. The girls' clothes don't tend to have pockets.

countcalculia · 28/06/2024 11:40

I’m on holiday and I’ve got some dresses with pockets, some without.

The happiness I get from the deep pockets in my dress is unreal.

VoteLabour · 28/06/2024 11:57

I have to have certain belongings on me at all times, so I'd have to carry a pocket size bag or have pockets.
