And are your mum friends (if you have/want any) a similar age?

I’m moving back to the U.K. and am a slightly older mum-46, with a 6 year old. Coming from big mix of ex pat friends ranging from 33-50, age isn’t an issue, most ot my closest friends I met through Dd are late 30’s. My friends before this were my age, give or take a couple of years either way.
Is it different in the U.K.?
Are most people quite fixed in their set of friends? Worried it may be hard as I’m going back to a place where I only have family (no previous friends here as have never lived here before)

I'm 30 with a 9 Yr old and 4.5 year old

Mummynextdoor · 26/06/2024 21:53

I was 40 when my eldest started school and 43 for my youngest. One of the older mums in both cases but not the oldest. Most were in their 30's.

nutbrownhare15 · 26/06/2024 22:00

It really depends on your area. I had my kids at 33 and 37. Most parents where I live seem to be a couple of years older or younger than me so had kids in the 30-40 age bracket.

TheGoogleMum · 26/06/2024 22:12

35 when oldest started primary school. I'm not sure how old the other mums are. I know of 1 who recently turned 40 but she has a few older children and the one in same class as my oldest is her youngest

Barryplopper · 26/06/2024 22:19

32 this year and have one in year 2 (7) and one in year 6 (11) . Not sure what the avg age is? There's a good mix ..

SmileLady · 26/06/2024 22:25

I don't think anyone cares about age. Just be friendly and smile. You'll be fine! Good luck with your move!

DrCoconut · 26/06/2024 22:30

I'm late 40s and most people my age picking kids up from year 3 are grandparents. The mums are mostly 20s with a few in their 30s.

MavisPennies · 26/06/2024 22:36

I was 34 when my eldest started in reception, the range was from 22-49. That's in London, a very mixed school socioeconomically and ethnically. Generally we all got on pretty well I thought and so did/do the kids.

Depends on the area where your children will be going to school. If you are in an affluent, wealthy area, you will find plenty of older mums. If you are in a poorer area, the mums will tend to be much younger. This is of course a massive generalisation but it's broadly true.

I think that sounds right. I live in a very affluent area and all the mums are older. I'm 43 with a 8 and 2yo.

Ihaveoflate · 26/06/2024 23:01

I have a child in Reception and I'm 43. The school is very mixed socially, and there's probably twenty years between the oldest and youngest parents in the class.

DH is 48, similar to a couple of the other dads. He could easily be the parent of sone of the younger dads, but it really doesn't matter. Parents don't really socialise beyond small talk in the playground though.

SockQueen · 26/06/2024 23:08

I'm 40, with kids in Y2 and Reception. I'm probably the older side of average here, it's a nice enough area but not hugely wealthy either. There are enough parents close to my age (I assume, haven't actually asked many!) that I don't feel out of place.

Moveoverdarlin · 26/06/2024 23:10

I’m 44 with one in reception and one in year 2.

GallifreyGirl · 27/06/2024 01:47

Found this thread really interesting to see different ages and how areas can affect this. I’m 40 and have a 17 y/o and 16 yr old. I am more at the younger end of my DC’s friends parents I live in the midlands in a rural, affluent area. It Just happened that I decided to marry young and be a SAHM

edited to add. Perhaps makes a difference that my husband is 55 and I am his 2nd wife

biostudent · 27/06/2024 10:18

I'm in Somerset, I'll be 29 when my son starts in September, that seems to be slightly on the younger side, but not by much, there are a few younger than me but when my step-daughter started when I was 23 I felt very very young and out of place!

bows101 · 27/06/2024 10:18

I'm 30 and I'm the youngest parent at my DS school (he's 5)

bows101 · 27/06/2024 10:19

*I meant youngest parent in his class, not the whole school 😬

WiseBiscuit · 27/06/2024 10:21

Depends where you live. I’m 46, DH is 51 and DD is almost 5.
