And are your mum friends (if you have/want any) a similar age?

I’m moving back to the U.K. and am a slightly older mum-46, with a 6 year old. Coming from big mix of ex pat friends ranging from 33-50, age isn’t an issue, most ot my closest friends I met through Dd are late 30’s. My friends before this were my age, give or take a couple of years either way.
Is it different in the U.K.?
Are most people quite fixed in their set of friends? Worried it may be hard as I’m going back to a place where I only have family (no previous friends here as have never lived here before)

I was 41 when dd was born...I wasn't the oldest for first child....no one cares...she just mums....it's a playground you collect your child...I think the mums ranged from 20s to 40s...

ClonedSquare · 26/06/2024 18:34

As a teacher, I'd say most of my year 1 pupils' parents were late 30s, some around 40. The older ones tended to have older children. In the less affluent areas, it was more like early 30s and some late twenties.

In my NCT group, I was 31 when I had my son and was the second youngest. But the oldest in the group was only 37 and was on her second child rather than a first time mum. At baby and toddler groups, I don't think I met anyone who was older than 40. This is in a very affluent northern area.

whatthejuice · 26/06/2024 18:34

I was 36 when my eldest started school in reception. I'll be 39 when my youngest starts.
There will almost certainly be a range so I wouldn't worry.

anchoviesanchovies · 26/06/2024 18:40

I had the same worry when I moved back from Asia. I’m 52 with a 5 yr old. I was the oldest mum at nursery and I am for my child’s school year. There are a handful of older mums but all still a few years younger than me. I’m in a pretty wealthy area in the South East.

Despite this I found a group of mums at nursery that I really connected with and we still spend a lot of time together. Five of us (5 families) are off camping together this weekend.

I haven’t connected in the same way with the school mums but there are a few I enjoy spending time with, with the kids, and I think friendship will develop.

Incidentally I also seem to be the only single mum. There definitely wasn’t another single mum in my son’s year at nursery and I haven’t come across one yet in his school year.

i suspect in Cornwall mums will generally be younger but I could be wrong.

Spacecowboys · 26/06/2024 18:42

I agree this will be area dependent. I live in the north, where plenty of women have been to university, are home owners and have started their families by mid twenties. So are early thirties when their children are in infant school. But there are mums in their 40’s too.

Feeeqq · 26/06/2024 18:46

43 and my youngest is a seven-year-old in year 2. I live in London.

Lots of my friends had babies 40+ so I’m median age at the school gates.

LuckysDadsHat · 26/06/2024 18:47

I am 47 with a child just finishing Y2.

A1ia · 26/06/2024 18:52

34 with a 5 year old... Admittedly, I don't have any "mum friends" with kids similar ages despite taking my son to baby groups and things before returning to work, full time, when he was 12 months old.

RandomUsernameHere · 26/06/2024 18:57

It's going to vary massively depending on the type of school and the area. My DC are older now but I was in my early thirties when they were in early primary.

StopInhalingRevels · 26/06/2024 18:58

Eldest DS has just finished his GCSEs. I'm 41 and one of the younger mothers at that school.

DTwins will be starting school in September and I will be about average age for that school.

Affluent area.

FilthyforFirth · 26/06/2024 19:00

I'm in SE and am 39 with a 6 year old. On the younger side of mums in my sons class but I had my second at 35 so probably will be on the older end when he starts school next year.

Himitsu · 26/06/2024 19:00

What part of Cornwall? The part I’m from it’s mostly younger mums. Myself and my friends had our first at 20. Where I live now though the mums are older.

SmellyNelliey · 26/06/2024 19:00

I'm 28 and the youngest mum on the playgroup for my 4&5 year olds
And definitely the youngest on my 10year olds.
Most parents are mids 30s to 50s.
I'm in Staffordshire in a small village.

Covidwoes · 26/06/2024 19:01

I'm 38 with a nearly six year old (in Y1). My other DC is nearly 3 and a half.

Skykidsspy · 26/06/2024 19:03

Our school mum ages range from 25-50ish at a guess and it’s sometimes hard to know if they’re grannies or mums. Quite a few will have a huge range in their children’s ages too with blended families.

Dads have an even bigger range.

Bettergetthebunker · 26/06/2024 19:04

I was 32 when my eldest started reception. South east

olympicsrock · 26/06/2024 19:04

I’m 46 with a nearly 9 year old. South coast private school. Age Range is 40 to 50 . So you would be at the top end. We all hang out together though. Personality is more important than age

arinya · 26/06/2024 19:07

I’m 48 and have an 11yr old in Y6

Sanch1 · 26/06/2024 19:08

I'm in Devon. I am 42 with a 3,8,11 year old but there are also mums a lot younger and a bit older. I think most places have a fair mix these days?

jamstart · 26/06/2024 19:10

I'm 44 with a 6yo and 2yo, so I'll be 46 when youngest starts school. I'd say I'm a bit older than average for mum friends I met through classes for 6yo, and towards one of the oldest for mum friends I've met through the 2yo. I'm in an affluent part of N London, and dcs go to a private school so generally the parents are a bit older on average as they established their careers before having dc.

MyBigFatGreekSalad · 26/06/2024 19:12

4 year old in pre school going into reception in sept.

Im 29.

70sShmeventies · 26/06/2024 19:12

36 with a 5 and 2 year old. Most people in my area are mid 30s- mid40s with a few older and a few younger.

fuckyourpronouns · 26/06/2024 19:14

42 with a 6&7 year old. Most of the mums at school are between 35-45

Heatherbell1978 · 26/06/2024 19:14

I'm 46 with a 7 (and 9) year old. Where I live that's fairly normal.

nc14 · 26/06/2024 19:15

I agree with pp who said it will be area dependent. I will be 40 (nearly 41) when my eldest starts school and 43 (nearly 44) when my youngest does. When I was pregnant with DC2 my midwife told me pregnancies under the age of 30 are very rare in my area (as I was acutely aware I was on the older side!).
