To want to move to a less posh area for a bigger flat?

I rent a one bedroom flat with my partner. It's a very cute flat, but it's tiny. More suited to a pied a terre rather than our only home. It's 40 sqm and £2,000 a month, because we live in Chelsea (which is cheap)

I want to move to a less posh area like Clapham or Maida Vale and get a much bigger one bedroom flat for the same amount of money. But dp is insisting he can't live in a less nice area

He's being ridiculous. It's not like you're suggesting to move to a terrible area.

If he thinks Maida Vale isn't a nice area goodness only know what he'd make of most of London!!! I suggest you identify a few areas you can afford and spend a Saturday or Sunday mooching around each area, looking at the shops/cafes/restaurants etc and try to imagine yourselves living there. London is full of nice areas that are not quite as u affordable than Chelsea while still having the snob value / name recognition as Chelsea (which I bet is what he really means). Primrose Hill? Hampstead? Islington?

You say 'I rent'. What is the financial deal here?

I'd rather live in a small flat in a nicer area.

Whenever I read these sort of threads - I do wonder what the long term plan is here. Even under the current COL a £2K rent could go along way in the Suberbs to a Mortgage.
