Neighbour trimmed the tree that hangs over in to her garden......but

She chucked all the bits she trimmed over in to my garden

Is this normal?

I don't mind her trimming it - trees grow - but I'm pissed off that she threw it all over in to my garden

I think what she has done is the right thing. If she's normally nice, I'd let it go.

Most neighbours would prefer the tree to have been planted further away from their boundary fence so this kind of thing wouldn't be a problem!

Far too many people plant trees right to their boundary which inflicts half of it on their neighbours.

The tree pre-dates at least one of the houses according to the OP.

BrigadierEtienneGerard · 24/06/2024 20:14

Totally normal. Never known a tree or hedge trimmed by neighbours where this didn't happen.

Snowflakeslayer · 24/06/2024 20:21

Legally they are obliged to offer them to you, not give them to you. If you decline, it’s for them to deal with. That’s a fact, as I’ve dealt with it before.

SeeSawe · 24/06/2024 20:50

You should have offered to trim the trees or at least kept them from overhanging on their property in the first place. It would saved your neighbors being annoyed to the point that they threw the the clippings into your garden.

Bugbabe1970 · 24/06/2024 21:25

YouveGotAFastCar · 23/06/2024 16:07

Legally that’s what she has to do. She can clip your tree where it overhangs her land, but she has to return the clippings to you.

No she doesn’t
legally she can clip them and has to offer them to you - not throw them over your wall!

The OP has explained that the tree predates at least one if not both of the properties

It is the law. You are allowed to cut back tree branches overhanging your garden, but you MUST put the branches over the fence to the owner.

This is because if the tree branches are fruit bearing, the one who prunes will not be accused of stealing fruit when it is ripe.

Good Lord. Please read the full thread. Or even just some of it. You do not throw the branches or fruit over the fence. You offer them to the tree over. If they don't want them then you dispose of them.

TheEternalForever · 24/06/2024 19:34

It's presumably your tree though? I wouldn't get worked up about it tbh, surely you can just sling the trimmings in your brown bin and move on? And I guess next time cut your own tree before it starts hanging over into her garden, then you won't have to worry about where the clippings end up because you'll be the one taking care of it anyway

No its their tree like I said, and brambles growing over and through our fence that cost two grand. We dont have trees so no idea what youre talking about 😂

MartyFunkhouser · 24/06/2024 23:06

All these people saying you MUST throw cuttings over the fence 😂

It’s an antagonistic and dickish thing to do imo. Yes, offer them to the neighbour (but who’s going to say yes to that?), but a normal
person would just dispose of them like any other bit of their own garden trimmings.

Tallgirlsrock · 24/06/2024 23:43

Please look at this page : https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/types/trees/the-law
I was reading it (and luckily saved it) this past weekend when a neighbour came round shouting that our tree was growing over the fence into his garden and he was going to remove said branches and shove them somewhere unpleasant about my body. I was looking up to see if he can take legal action. Anyway I thought this would be useful to you.

Trees and the law / RHS Gardening

Trees add structure and drama to a garden but their size and potential to cause nuisance or damage means they can sometimes be a worry. Understanding UK law relating to trees can help everyone grasp the rights and responsibilities of tree ownership.

My neighbours plant grew over my fence. I trimmed and put in green bin. Easy. I wouldn't throw them over the fence, why would I behave in such a childish passive aggressive way... life is too short.

It is very normal and also the law.

And what about their windows and 10 ft line pole etc they dumped in my garden should I put them in my bin and not get worked up about it? 😂

Bogeyes · 25/06/2024 09:38

Well done to her. I have a neighbour just like you....bloody tree!

theowlwhisperer · 25/06/2024 11:17

Why do people stupidly buy houses with garden surrounded by trees then moan about the trees? Get a flat in tower block with no greenery, you won't be bothered then..

I know bloody trees making all that shitty oxygen. Fucking sucking that nice carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere, just when it's warming up nicely.

Or not be a dick and be responsible for keeping your tree cut back from your neighbours.

Both ways of avoiding this ridiculous saga.

like that you mean?

The only one behaving like a dick are the ones who buy properties around trees and moan about the trees.

Usually the same ones who moan that the summer is too hot because there's no shade

Perhaps you aren't aware that trees can be planted and then grow?

The tree was there b fire r house was built

With moronic neighbours like that, I'd be planting a lot more fast-growing trees 😂

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 25/06/2024 20:24

If it's growing over her garden and you haven't offered to cut it then you should do the neighbourly thing by disposing of the trimmings without fuss!

Offer to do it next time.

NickyT64 · 29/06/2024 18:57

I know it may seem petty but as others have said by law she had to. Having said that she didn’t have to chuck it all in your garden, you’re supposed to be ‘offered’ it! Like you’d say yes!!!

Tree has been there 50 years - her house 5 years

We don't have brown bins here - the council don't collect garden waste
