Waitrose incident.

I am not sure if I am being sensitive or if I should complain.

Every Sunday morning I go out for a coffee and read my book, then do the weekly shop without the children. I like to be back before midday so I can spend the rest of the time with my children, including 9 month old baby. We have every supermarket local to us, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, M&S, Asda, Tesco, and I always use the ‘scan and shop’ to make the shopping as quick and easy as possible. I’ve never had an issue until today in Waitrose. I’ve only used it a couple of times in Waitrose and never for a big shop.

After scanning my entire shop, strategically packing it so it’s easy to unload at home, I went to pay. When I beeped the scanner, it flagged up as needing to be checked. I thought that was fair enough, it happens sometimes, and I haven’t done a weekly shop in Waitrose before using the ‘scan and shop’ option. The worker came over and said she needed to rescan 30/58 items. I thought that was ridiculous, in every other shop they scan a random selection of a few items, not over half your shop. It seemed pointless to me to have even used the option in the first place, but I didn’t say anything and the worker started to empty shopping bags full to rescan items. This was taking ages, but I just stood patiently waiting for her to finish.

Then, she came across one that I apparently hadn’t scanned. I know I did, but it was a yellow sticker packet so I can only assume that it hadn’t registered properly. She repeatedly asked me if I had scanned it, and I repeatedly told her I had but it clearly hadn’t registered.

She told me she would need to rescan my entire shopping trolley, then took me over to a till, and I stood on the end whilst she unpacked every single one of my bags and scanned every item individually. It was completely unsubtle, in front of all of the other customers, and obvious that they were rescanning the entire shop in case I was attempting to steal things. I felt like an idiot and a thief. To make matters worse, I am a small business owner working with children, and had already bumped into several of my clients in the shop. I was absolutely mortified thinking that they may think I am a thief.

I was thoroughly embarrassed and teary eyed, and hastily shoved everything back into bags whilst the Waitrose worker apologised. Half of my shopping is crushed as I was shoving things back into the bags indiscriminately. I promptly paid and left but it has really upset me. By that point, I’d spent around 20 minutes having everything rescanned.

AIBU to think that if Waitrose are going to have a system that is open to abuse, they need to have a solution that doesn’t involve treating customers like thieves? I have never had an experience like this in any other store and whilst I realise they have to protect themselves from theft, surely this is not the correct way to go about. It’s not the Waitrose workers fault, it just seems like a very poor system and they shouldn’t offer ‘scan and shop’ if this is the way they treat customers.

I agree with you OP. Makes me livid that scan and shop exists. If the store doesn't trust the customer to scan the shopping correctly, then they need to put proper tills with cashiers, back in.
This is the exact reason why I use a proper till now - every time I've used scan and shop in asda, I'm always getting checked.

I estimate that in Waitrose I get rescanned about once every 100 shopping trips.

Serencwtch · 25/06/2024 10:25

A security guard & colleague where I work stopped a shoplifter with similar grocery/baby products. Turned out to be a gang of 3 who turned on the 2 members of staff. Both were seriously injured. The guard has a young baby & toddler at home .
Shoplifting isn't a victimless crime. Maybe the big 4 can afford to lose some stock but we are still humans with families of our own that are having to deal with it.

Loubelou14 · 25/06/2024 13:53

This happened to me recently. It's not to do with their procedures but the way the staff handle the situation. Lacks empathy and professionalism.

So it’s the staff's fault for not being kind enough to the thieves?

Gamingvice · 25/06/2024 14:31

I do not scan and shop at Waitrose anymore for this reason - you shouldn't feel embarrassing I am sure no one thought you were stealing but every time I have used it I have had a rescan and they do scan a really high number of products and then twice I have had to then go to a till for a rescan which defeats any point of doing it.
They kept trying to get me to try it again in store and I explained that it doesn't work - no idea if they have fed back or not.
Don't use it!

There's an assumption in that statement that anyone who mis-scans something is a thief.

No, they don't have to be kind to thieves. But they don't treat everyone as if they are one.

PPs have pointed out that you can have errors by having different flavours but scanning one item twice instead of each flavour once. Hardly theft!

Very different from my experience. I’ve had very few problems with the scanners and find it much quicker to pack my shopping straight away than have to handle it three times (and queue for the traditional checkouts). As I’ve said elsewhere, I estimate that I get a rescan about once every 100 shops.

OK, but I don’t understand what the staff are supposed to have done that was "unprofessional".

MummyDummyNow · 25/06/2024 14:51

Sorry OP but do you really think anyone that saw you cared? If I saw a stranger or even if it was someone I knew having their shopping rescanned I wouldn't think twice.

JayniSummers · 25/06/2024 14:58

PandoraSox · 23/06/2024 14:03

I don't think yabu. Stores introduce these self service mechanisms purely to save money on staff.

If they don't trust their customers, then go back to fully manned tills and stop making customers do the store's job.

This , 100% this

I honestly find it bizarre, I only really do little shops there now as I get deliveries instead - mostly because its easier!
I think maybe their systems are stricter so one you get a rescan once they watch you more carefully.

Me neither! I think it was her crying and crushing her shopping into bags as fast as possible was the embarrassing bit and made her look guilty.

Dontbeabitterlemon · 25/06/2024 17:40

Can appreciate your embarrassment but likely no one noticed.

Chardonnay73 · 25/06/2024 17:57

Had a very timely update to this today.
Went to Asda today for a big shop. Used self scan as I find it easier than loading everything onto the conveyer and repacking.
With this thread in mind, I scanned everything meticulously. Everything registered.
Feeling rather smug I went to the checkout. Only to be selected for a random total rescan!!! Fuckers!!!
Got taken to a separate check out area to unload my shopping… all £268 of it.
The lady was very apologetic and worked as quickly as she could.
I made a point of looking to see if I was getting any ‘glances’ from other customers.
No one gave a shit. Not one person I saw looked up from their own shopping wrangles.
I managed to repack my shopping without crushing anything, or crying and went home to my children (20 and 17 … years, not months 🤣)

So it is possible to be selected for a self scan check without feeling like a criminal. Just sayin… 😜

pollymere · 25/06/2024 19:09

If an item comes up as not being scanned, they do then have to rescan everything. I've also had it happen in Sainsbury's when the person scanned my milk twice which was entirely her own fault!

However, if you'd asked for help to repack then can usually get someone for you (had someone in both Sainsbury's and Waitrose for this).

Your embarrassment and feeling flustered are all your own. No one makes judgements or cares about rescans. They happen all the time. It's frustrating but that's it. Even referring to it as an incident shows how much it's built up in your mind. An incident deserves a headline in a newspaper - Woman gets Rescan wouldn't even make the Daily Fail x

Fuck that I wont be using one ever again.

ScottishDora · 25/06/2024 20:23

We had our whole shop rescanned in waitrose cause he couldn't get his scanner to work. It was inconvenient but it's just life.

For a shop that big, I think you would have been entirely reasonable to have asked the shop staff to unload and repack your shopping while you watched.

T1Dmama · 25/06/2024 22:32

I’ve had this happen twice in tesco. They scanned an item I’d missed and then rescanned the whole trolley, I was a bit embarrassed but I think most people have forgotten an item at some point!… the second time my DD had added a bag of chocolate chips worth about 50p and missed scanning them… had to rescan everything !…. Both times it was only the 1 item… felt a bit embarrassed but I think the staff are used to it.
would be totally different if you had accidently forgotten to scan a £50 bottle of gin or something!
just be aware you’re more likely to be stopped again now, so do a few small shops in there on the self service before doing another big one. I don’t know how Waitrose works, but the Tesco scanners have a picture of the items on the screen, might be worth double checking everything has scanned properly.. it is a nuisance. You use these things to save time and then you end up stood there waiting ages while they scan half a dozen items, in your case almost 40… then the whole bloody lot…

Thank goodness your kids were older… imagine if you’d nipped in before the school run and got selected randomly! You’d have to just say ‘sorry I’ve got to go and collect my modem and leave!

FlipFlop1987 · 26/06/2024 16:29

This happened to me in Sainsbury’s. First time I had used the scan and go, I was taken over to rescan everything about 40 thing, all went through first time and when repacked, she asked me for the scanner I had used. When we went to the till, another assistant had taken the scanner away thinking it was finished with. The assistant was mortified, especially when my 6 month old baby started screaming to be fed. Luckily, just as we were about to start scanning it all for the third time, my Nectar card was scanned and it remembered all my shopping. It took absolutely ages though and a total waste of time having done all the scanning myself. Tesco is very reliable, never again at Sainsbury’s! I didn’t really think at the time people may think I had stolen anything. Just pissed off it took so long

I knew there was a reason I don’t use the scanning bollocks

Same here!! Help to save jobs by using the tills. Self scanning is a bloody nuisance - people fanny around scanning up and down the aisles- I’d ban it, to be honest.

But if people want to use it, then the price you pay is spot checking and rescanning and repacking.

Cattery · 26/06/2024 17:03

@Maray1967 Agree 100 per cent.

Not if you use it properly. I love self-scan and haven’t been spot checked since the first few times I used it.

Chardonnay73 · 26/06/2024 19:47

@countcalculia , bearing in mind this thread I was impeccable in my scanning… and even then I was selected for a full random selection for a rescan, and the assistant commented that it was all in order.
I use self scan as I have back issues as I only have to put the shopping directly into bags in the trolley and lift the shopping once into the car and my strapping lads carry it into the house for me. Hate online deliveries due to rubbish dates and substitutions so this works for me.
Rescans are are necessary evil in this situation 🤷‍♀️
