He's 11 months old, poor little thing . Fortunately he's going to be ok - he got off quite lightly, I think - but it was scary and he was really poorly for a day or so. Spent 10 hours in A&E yesterday while he had chest x-rays, blood tests, IV fluids etc. Now we're just waiting to see if his sister, who's 2, gets it - she's had one dose of MMR already so fingers crossed she's immune.

We live in an area where immunisation rates are among the lowest in the country. Now I have to go and tell all parents of the other babies he's met recently that their children might be at risk as well...

If only it were that simple Macdoodle.

macdoodle · 08/04/2008 22:37

There were certainly comments about herd immunity 100% effectiveness etc neither of those 2 vaccines were wither but because of 100% take up and herd immunity both of those diseases have been eradicated in the first world ....a visit to the third world will show the devastating effects of those as well as measles Where people desperately queue up for what they view as life saving miracle vaccines which we flippantly dismiss

Macdoodle do you have links that show smallpox and polio vaccine take up to have been 100% at any time in history?

Even vaccine manufacturers admit that efficacy is not 100%.

macdoodle · 08/04/2008 22:41

If they survive "In 1999 there were 873,000 deaths from measles, which decreased to 345,000 by 2005"...or are not permanently damaged...measles is not like a cough or cold unfortunately this generation is yet to see the damage a measles epidemic can cause ...it is coming though

NorthernLurker · 08/04/2008 22:42

Kerry - if you are going to link polio vaccine to CJD - could you provide links to the recent and reputable research which shows that children were infected as you claim?

McDoodle, where do you stand on the issue of OPV being contaminated with SV40?

Do you agree with the fact that vaccines used in developing countries still contain thimerosal, a preservative that is no longer used (for safety reasons) in most childhood vaccines in the west?

Off to bed too, night night

NorthernLurker · 08/04/2008 22:46

It is not unknown for children in this country to be 'malnourished, fighting off other diseases already and in generally poor health'

Beachcomber · 08/04/2008 22:47

McDoodle do you think that nutritional status and general health affect how the body deals with disease?

I pressume that the deaths you are refering to are figures for developing countries.

redadmiral · 08/04/2008 22:47

Thanks for the replies re the reactions. Beachcomber, probably impossible to answer, but was the severe local reaction related to the food allergies etc? Sounds like you've researched it thoroughly.

WestCountryLass · 08/04/2008 22:47

NNever previously heard about the bad batch and the CJD. Am really going to bed but could you post info so can look at that in the morning? Thanks (if you can)

Greyriverside · 08/04/2008 22:48

In 1999 there were 873,000 deaths from measles>>

Macdoodle, I think those figures must be worldwide? I also think deaths from measles and many other illnesses dropped drastically as our standards of nutruition and hygiene rose. Before vaccines were discovered.

And as for "measles is not like a cough or cold" I know what it's like because I had it. Just about everyone did when I was young and we were not rushed to hospital or anything.

If anyone has figures for deaths from measles in the UK for the 50s or 60s I'd be interested.

terriblyashamed · 08/04/2008 22:49

"I took issue with terriblyashamed's insinuation that people who took the MMR were more likely to be principled and public-spirited enough to clear up shit than thoose who refused it. I was demonstrating that you could argue it the other way too."

I'm nit-picking now, but that is not what I argued at all. I made no comparison between vaccinators and non-vaccinators and dog shit picking-upping.

But the other side of my argument is "some of the people being high-handed and obtuse about the reasons for some parents not taking up vaccines are quite happily smearing lethal dog shit all over the pavements my children walk to school on". So who are these people who happily smear lethal dogshit on the pavements? Where are they? Are they here tonight on Mumsnet? Are they more likely to have opted for MMR or not opted for MMR?

Have I only had my dcs MMRd because the health visitors said I should? Because they have a little red book. I don't think so ...
