Toilet cubicle etiquette

Female toilets in work. As per diagram.
AIBU that C is the 'correct' choice of cubicle, assuming all cubicles are empty upon entry?

I was just in cubicle C, and someone entered moments behind me, and went into B. I think that's madness and can't fathom why, out of the two remaining cubicles available, you'd opt to go into the one right next to someone. curious to know if others would have done the same.

I believe that statistically, A is apparently the cleanest cubicle, due to it being used least.

YABU: B is a good cubicle choice, I like to be in the middle of things.
YANBU: B is madness and should only be selected when A and C are otherwise engaged.

@MaryBethMayfair I understood the assignment, Im having a slow work day too!
In those circs I would definitely opt for A, I always leave a cubicle between me and others if possible.
Also if Ive seen a work colleague go in, I prefer not to leave until they've left.
Context I work in a team of 20 on a floor of hundreds so our loos are one long row of about 12 - This results in many location choices!

Oh dear, I assumed it would be obvious that this was a light-hearted pondering as opposed to "worrying" about it. Diagram because I'm having a very slow work-day and it killed 30 seconds.

Seems everything must be clearly stated on MN these days. Ah well.

I understood that it was light-hearted OP and voted YANBU. Providing of course that if C was occupied, I would go to A ONLY if it had a) a locking door, b) a hook to hang my bag and c) plenty of loo roll. If it didn't have a), b) or c), I would therefore try cubicle B.

Oldermum84 · 20/06/2024 11:35

I'm with you OP.

LakeTiticaca · 20/06/2024 11:36

Maybe they were desperate and didn't have time to select an "appropriate" bog 🤣

countcalculia · 20/06/2024 11:40

I always avoid the cubicle someone has just come out, so I don't have to breathe in their faecal particles 😂

I don't have a cubicle preference, but I do check for skid marks / period stains and quickly exist the cubicle if I see these things.

What annoys is when people put wads of toilet paper in the toilet bowl so people can't hear their plop plops. It just blocks the toilet for the next person, and no one cares anyway, we all plop plop.

Gettingbysomehow · 20/06/2024 11:41

I HATE that OP. Our work cubicles are open at the top and botto. And when I go in to have a sneaky poo someone ALWAYS chooses the cubicle right next to me. Or has a very long chat with someone right outside my door. I hate it.

CatamaranViper · 20/06/2024 11:43

I'm a creature of habit. I'll use the toilet I always use if I can. Obviously won't wait for it but if I have a choice I'll choose 'my' toilet.

SpringerFall · 20/06/2024 11:43

I would more likely gone C then B possibly next if all empty

If someone was in C or A I would go the opposite but I am not bothered if someone went next to me

I love this light-hearted threads but funnily enough I think there has been genuine studies on thus

Something about 'toilet cubicle maths' or something like that

I think it is a bit of fun but I am also fascinated by the theory behind these things

MartyFunkhouser · 20/06/2024 11:44

I would not choose one next to an occupied one if I could avoid it, in case that occupant was doing a poo 😬

But, I don’t there’s any etiquette about it.

Todaywasbetter · 20/06/2024 11:45

The correct answer is C always choose the toilet furthest away from the entry point that is the cleanest.

CelesteCunningham · 20/06/2024 11:46

IME most women leave the gap, which means A and C will be the most popular and B the cleanest.

Wordsofprey · 20/06/2024 11:47

Lack of toilet paper or shit, blood, sick, or piss, or all 4, or a mixture of some, would send me to whatever other toilet was available. Did you check for evidence of a massacre in toilet C before you left?🥸

theowlwhisperer · 20/06/2024 11:31

I applaud the diagram!

I can't understand why people would not want to leave an empty space in between when there's a choice, but some people seems to need to be as close to others as possible, toilets, car parks, beach...

I have noticed this too!

If there was one car in the car park, I would park at least 1 or 2 spaces away from the other car.

But I’ve noticed other people would park right next to the car, leaving no spaces.

I remember being at an outdoor event and going to a space really far away from anyone else and had someone come and sit so close to me that she was actually sat on my skirt and I had to ask her to scoot over so I could pull my skirt free, even though there was an entire field full of space.

MumblesParty · 20/06/2024 11:48

I never even think about spacing. I just walk in, probably choose the one with the most obviously open door (I don’t want to have to check if it’s occupied or not), glance in the toilet bowl to check for horrors, check there’s paper, then I’m happy.

I can confirm that all three cubicles are usually very well maintained and stocked. Sometimes by a Friday afternoon one might be out of loo roll but generally, cleanliness is not an issue.

No the one closest to the entry point is statistically the cleanest, as most people choose the one furthest away.

NotSoSimpleHere · 20/06/2024 11:50

I'd go to whichever felt most comfortable, be that location, cleanliness, having toilet paper, whatever. Doesn't matter who else is where. They are individual units and private. Sometimes I have to skip over cubicles due to mess or lack of toilet paper.

Topofthemountain · 20/06/2024 11:50

I got my letters wrong. If you were in A, I'd go in B.

If no-one was in A I'd use that, but I might use B. I like to mix things up.

Iliketulips · 20/06/2024 11:51

I would have chosen A if it was clean/had toilet paper as I'd prefer not to be next to others doing whatever, however, I really don't think there is any etiquette.

In that case, string them up. Genuinely though I'd be slightly worried it was a weirdo with a camera if there was empty cubicles and somebody chose the one next to mine.

When I was working in the office I noticed certain people beeline for certain toilets, like it's a familiar home away from home for them. Could be one of those oddballs who has an emotional connection to toilet B

Are they really though? We have dozens of toilets in our office and the cleaners clean each one to a gleam every hour without fail. However, some scruffbags still manage to leave the toilets in a state in that short window.

Washingmachineslivelongerwithcalgon1 · 20/06/2024 11:54

One of my all time pet hates! Arrrgggggg! YANBU.

behindthemall · 20/06/2024 11:55

We have 5 or 6 cubicles in our office toilets. I always use the second one in, unless it’s in use. As you walk in the door, you’d have to walk around the open door a bit to get to the first one and so it’s slightly less intuitive to get into than all the others.

In fact, if cubicle 2 is empty I don’t even check which of the others is occupied, I’m just straight into cubicle 2!

Washingmachineslivelongerwithcalgon1 · 20/06/2024 11:56

Probably the same lot who decide to sit at the table behind you in an empty restaurant or park next to your car with hundreds of other spaces available!

Washingmachineslivelongerwithcalgon1 · 20/06/2024 11:57

Sheeple.
