Toilet cubicle etiquette

Female toilets in work. As per diagram.
AIBU that C is the 'correct' choice of cubicle, assuming all cubicles are empty upon entry?

I was just in cubicle C, and someone entered moments behind me, and went into B. I think that's madness and can't fathom why, out of the two remaining cubicles available, you'd opt to go into the one right next to someone. curious to know if others would have done the same.

I believe that statistically, A is apparently the cleanest cubicle, due to it being used least.

YABU: B is a good cubicle choice, I like to be in the middle of things.
YANBU: B is madness and should only be selected when A and C are otherwise engaged.

Eh??

Surely it’s better to choose the cubicle next to someone else in case yours has run out of loo paper and you need them to bung you some under the partition?

Ereyraa · 20/06/2024 11:11

There aren’t any rules

BibbyBobbyBoo · 20/06/2024 11:11

I would always choose A as my first choice - regardless if someone is in B. C is statistically the dirtiest cubicle.

Oh dear, I assumed it would be obvious that this was a light-hearted pondering as opposed to "worrying" about it. Diagram because I'm having a very slow work-day and it killed 30 seconds.

Seems everything must be clearly stated on MN these days. Ah well.

I'm usually good at spotting irony. I didn't spot it here.

Perhaps, instead of blaming us for being obtuse you might like to consider the possibility that your attempt at humour didn't work?

KimberleyClark · 20/06/2024 11:12

If there’s no paper or a big turd in A, then tough, I’m using B.

Anoisagusaris · 20/06/2024 11:13

My thinking is that B is the cleanest as people will choose A or C first. So I sometimes choose B if all cubicles are empty. But I agree that if A or C are occupied then you don’t pick B.

Riversideandrelax · 20/06/2024 11:13

You should have gone in A. You could have walked down to C then found it engaged. Surely you use the first available?

KreedKafer · 20/06/2024 11:14

Statistically, B would actually be the cleanest cubicle, because if someone's in C, most people would use A (and vice versa). People always think A would be the least used, but it's not.

Anyway - it doesn't matter in the slightest. They're cubicles. You can take a piss in any of them without affecting anyone else.

SwedeCarrotLimes · 20/06/2024 11:15

Pragmatically I like to use the first cubicle (A in this instance). A quick glance to ensure sufficient toilet paper and reasonable condition, but if not move to cubicle B and repeat.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 20/06/2024 11:15

I wouldn't pay any attention to which other cubicles were occupied. It's just a toilet. Everyone is there to do their own private business.

The other person may have looked into cubicle A and found it not looking/smelling very fresh.

Oh FFS take that stick out of your arse, OP wasn't intending to be humourous, she was just asking a lighthearted, silly question.

MrsKJones · 20/06/2024 11:15

We had this set up in my old job - I always used B whenever possible, regardless if the bathroom was empty or someone was using it. I'm not sure why, I just preferred it. The toilets are provided for you to empty your bladder and bowel. If you get embarrassed by being over heard/overhearing others that's something you need to work on.

Having said that, if I do need to empty my bowel (IBS, so not always my choice) I will endeavour to find a quieter less used toilet

Megifer · 20/06/2024 11:18

Yes the only acceptable choice is cubicle A.

I find it a bit weird when someone uses the cubicle right next to me if another one is free but only because I wouldn't do it, especially if they aren't full floor to ceiling ones.

Megifer · 20/06/2024 11:19

Or, just leave the toilet and come back later when no one in at all, far less uncomfortable 😬

Conniebygaslight · 20/06/2024 11:21

I think you've answered your own question OP.
I always use the one nearest the entrance as it's statistically less used so therefore likely to be cleaner-like you said.
Maybe the person who went into B felt funny using A (as a lot of people do-hence why it's cleaner)😀

Shan5474 · 20/06/2024 11:22

C - first choice
B - last resort
A - I would never ever use lest I make eye contact through the mirror with someone washing their hands, or someone outside the door recognised my unique tinkle on the porcelain and knew that I was currently having a bodily function

pizzaHeart · 20/06/2024 11:22

It could be that they were aiming for C but saw it’s occupied so went to B instead.
Also if you are walking quickly your trajectory from the door might naturally lead to B, you sort of keep going and you are into B, whereas you need to do a turn to get into A .

OneTC · 20/06/2024 11:23

Have only ever thought about it wrt urinals, especially when there's about 30 of them and matey comes and stands right next to you but give it less thought with cubicles, although would prefer a completely empty room if possible

CocoapuffPuff · 20/06/2024 11:24

Whichever one has bog roll and is clean.

I'm having a pee, not getting ready for the Oscars.

Randomsabreur · 20/06/2024 11:27

From experience I like to go far enough in to retrigger the sensor light, if you go for the equivalent of A at work the light doesn't trigger so can go out mid visit and isn't triggered by someone in a cubicle which given zero natural light isn't fun.

So I tend to head towards C and divert back if required.

Also A is the most often not working in that set of toilets...

timenowplease · 20/06/2024 11:27

Totally get it OP.

But for instance if all three were empty I wouldn't take A automatically because the next one might be better, so I'd check B too. If the standards are equal then I'd go ahead and use B rather than go back to A.

So maybe it's someone like me on autopilot.

Yellow2024 · 20/06/2024 11:28

I'm with you OP.

A tiny bit more privacy is nice.

I always hang on a second too so I don't have to wash hands at the same time and hang around for the hand drier.

Maybe I'm weird 🤷‍♀️

5128gap · 20/06/2024 11:30

In my office, my personal preference is always our A. No particular reason other than that's the one I use and I'm obviously a creature of habit. My next choice would be B. Our C would throw me entirely as it opens onto a view of the caretakers cupboard rather than the sinks, so I'd find that very disorientating. I think I've only used it once in ten years when a training session with set breaks caused higher than usual footfall.

Choochoo21 · 20/06/2024 11:31

I would choose A or C.

A is statistically the cleanest but C is furthest away and has a window.

(We have mixed sexed toilets and I feel more comfortable in C don’t really know why).

But nearly everyone (mainly female staff) choose B even if the other toilet is empty.

It doesn’t bother me but if someone is in C, I use A instead of the one right next to them.

theowlwhisperer · 20/06/2024 11:31

I applaud the diagram!

I can't understand why people would not want to leave an empty space in between when there's a choice, but some people seems to need to be as close to others as possible, toilets, car parks, beach...
