Seriously, why do they do that? They don't do it in cricket or tennis.

Because cricket and tennis are not the fastest-paced sports, are they? People get excited, especially if they support the team. It is logical that a dynamic sport will naturally be more excitable for the commentator.

Buryyiirwhat · 19/06/2024 14:36

Because ‘ oh my word. What a lovely return’ isn’t going to cut it! It’s much more fast paced that either of those boring fecking sports!

Prawncow · 19/06/2024 14:36

Go watch some Italian or Brazilian commentary. The U.K. commentary is tame by comparison.

fieldsofbutterflies · 19/06/2024 14:37

As above, plus football stadiums are noisy places and they need to be heard.

SidekickSylvia · 19/06/2024 14:38

It's ridiculous. When dh is watching anything on TV, I sit next to him, reading. Unless it's football because of the constant shouting and general emotional incontinence of the presenters, I have to go to another room.

Also, why do they tell us what a player is thinking? They have no more idea of a player's thoughts at any given time than the rest of us have.

MintTwirl · 19/06/2024 14:39

They get excited and caught up in the atmosphere. I quite like it.

ButWhatAboutTheBees · 19/06/2024 14:39

Well
You don't hear the cricket or tennis crowds chanting and screaming and yelling either do you?

KreedKafer · 19/06/2024 14:45

Cricket and tennis are silent games at which the crowd is largely quiet during play. Football isn't a silent game; players and coaches are allowed to call out as much as they like and the crowd make a noise non-stop, and the commentators are commentating in a noisy environment - they're positioned in a box that's just over the crowd. It's also very fast-paced game in comparison to cricket or tennis, which are very stop-start, so it would be odd for the commentary to be in hushed, calm tones.

It's also far from the only sport that has an excitable, loud commentary. Other noisy, fast-paced sports do too - eg sprint races at track & field meets, horse racing, rugby league, boxing.

The aim of televised sport is to give the viewer an experience that reflects the atmosphere of watching it in person, so the commentary is in keeping with that.

KreedKafer · 19/06/2024 14:52

Also, why do they tell us what a player is thinking?

All sports commentators do this. It's not unique to football.

And while, obviously, nobody knows exactly what's going on in an athlete's head, at least one of the commentary team for pretty much every sport is usually an ex-player of that sport, who does have a lot of insight into what it's like to be in the precise situation that the athletes on screen are in. I'm pretty confident that while, eg, Alan Shearer or Jermaine Jenas aren't psychic, they do have a fairly good idea of what it feels like to be subbed on in the last five minutes in a last-ditch attempt to turn a game around, or whatever.

CallThatCloudy · 19/06/2024 14:57

Don't mind the commentators (within reason), but the analysts... do we need every kick and move to be critiqued in real time? They should have done this, he should have done that. Well, they didn't, did they? Discuss it after, by all means, not during.

Skyrainlight · 19/06/2024 15:02

Not unreasonable, I can't stand shouting commentators in all sports.

refreshingseahorse · 19/06/2024 15:17

Because football is shit
(runs away and hides)

TheOnlyAletheia · 19/06/2024 15:30

Quiet football is unthinkable 😱 I never notice the commentators as I’m too preoccupied shouting at the players 😂

There’s one in particular who really yells and shrieks, even when turned down to 3 you can still hear him.🤬
