What are the chances of getting sick from an out of date cooked prawn?

I just ate a cooked prawn from M&S, one day out of date. It tasted a bit weird, hence looking at the packet - I was sure it was 20/6 and not 18/6 expiry.

I have a face to face important meeting at 3 and I'm seriously worried I might start cramping, being sick etc.

What are the odds?

you’ll know soon enough, but I wouldn’t worry about it just from the date - BB dates are very much guidelines and err on the side of caution

boombang · 19/06/2024 13:36

fairly high, with prawns, but still less than 50/50 I would guess

AmIimaginging · 19/06/2024 13:41

If you don't go by date, what do you go by?

Less chance if precooked. Im sure you will be fine x

I mean I prob wouldn’t eat a week out of date pack of prawns, though the husband probably would. But a couple of days, if I ate one by accident and it was precooked I wouldn’t worry about. You could get unlucky but that can happen with anything. I mostly go by smell and look of things

HoppingPavlova · 19/06/2024 13:50

If it didn’t have an out of sorts smell and taste but was just a bit rubbery then you should be fine.

Edited to add, I grew up on prawns coming in fresh off trawlers so know what is fresh versus ‘by the time it gets to retail sale’ and there is a difference in taste but you can also taste when they start to go off. Also depends on how delicate your stomach is. I reckon off prawns would have myself and some of my kids in the bathroom pronto but DH and our other kids seem to have guts made of steel and it wouldn’t bother them so quite individual.

Well there’s not a lot you can do now - obviously send your apologies for the meeting if you start feeling queasy before it’s due to start, if not, hope for the best! How long is it due to last?

HoppingPavlova · 19/06/2024 13:55

Weird or off? I think by the time they get to shops, and especially if they are in a shells off mode presentation, even within date they taste ‘weird’ as they are so definitely not fresh, but that’s different to ‘off’.

AmIimaginging · 19/06/2024 13:56

Not sure how to distinguish between off and weird.

The meeting lasts an hour. Here's hoping I don't crap myself involuntarily. BAD CAREER MOVE

I would argue that it is a better career move that crapping yourself voluntarily..

It tasted a bit weird and smelt a bit weird but you ate it anyway?

No, obviously it was in my mouth when I tasted it - and I smelled the other prawn in the pack, but thanks for stopping by
