To think droves of teachers will make the decision by husband made today- to leave

Peakyshelby · 17/06/2024 15:52

Well after 6 years of teaching my husband has broken down, gone to the doctors, been signed off and says he is done.

he has done 3 years in 2 schools and then done supply for 3 years. There is too much to list but the highlights have been

been told to go and fuck himself and other insults thrown at him by kids with hardly any consequences from parents and schools

having stuff chucked at him

having to appear as a witness in court when a parent beat up his own child at home time in the playground

having parents create a smear group on WhatsApp against him and 2 other newly qualified teachers because the parents said there little darlings behaviour must be down to inexperienced teachers not being able to handle them.

having parents laugh and him and tell him he is picking on their little darlings by trying to sanction them.

have children laughing at him and saying my mum and dad don’t care what I do

hardly any support from above.

There is too much more to write but today he had a 10 year old child walk up to him and pour a water bottle over his head.

he is done. He qualified with a group of 10 others and 8 of them have since quit. 2 did not get through there NQT year.

He says the system is broken

In our local Secondary there is a higher percentage of girls than boys being suspended at the moment

That's interesting.

Is it deserved? Or is the school harsher with girls?

MrsSunshine2b · 18/06/2024 01:09

My husband and I didn't leave because of behaviour, it was one of many contributing factors. Teaching is the worst job I've ever done. Leaving felt like leaving an abusive relationship. Our mental and physical health was destroyed, our confidence was ground down to nothing. Droves of teachers are leaving, have left, and no amount of schmaltzy recruitment campaigns are going to make up for the fact that very few people are willing to tolerate being treated so badly for very long.

IsEveryUserNameBloodyTaken · 18/06/2024 01:18

LandedSentry · 18/06/2024 00:02

That’s gonna make a difference - not. Lack of money causes abusive behaviour? What a ridiculous excuse.

Probably more likely the opposite. Labour even more support too many rights of the individual against the majority as it is. Individuals have the right to have a dangerous dog, the right to stay in council housing despite anti social behaviour, the right to openly steal from shops with little fear of consequence. (But god help you if you call someone the wrong pronoun - the police will be round in 10 seconds.)

Bang on

My dsis was teaching in an English primary school when one of the fathers got in to the school and pinned her to a wall by her throat. It took five other staff to drag him off.

The reason - she had told a 9yo he could not wear his new football strip to class.

It was the final straw for her, she resigned after 22 years, leaving her school without a deputy head and a safeguarding lead.

Some parents are nothing more than animals, raising their children to be just as bad.

Why bother with work or school? Tax the rich.

Everyone can live on benefits and have houses paid for by the rich.

We have 6.7m of working age on disability benefit, 6.7m people of working age on tax credits, 1.7m unemployed.

If benefits don't work out for you then petty theft is probably okay too, just avoid violent crime and then you won't go to jail as the police won't investigate.

If you spend your benefits on rubbish then don't worry, there is a food bank paid for by the state too. Plus you get energy saving enhancements to your house paid for by other billpayers and discounted water bills.

When you have finished your life of not working, you can have a state pension and housing benefit, when you need an old people's home don't worry it's free for you and we will make other people sell their homes and take all their savings to pay.

No need to work at school. No need to save money. No need to work. There is no fear of missing out on anything! No jeopardy! No one will be homeless. Thank god we can tax all those mugs who aren't rich enough to move abroad but still dumb enough to work.

Just last week, I was pushed over by a child I fell, hit my face on a wall and have 5 stitches in my head.

The reason? I had told the 9 year old he would have to turn his football shirt inside out for sports days as football shirts are not allowed in school. This is a rule that has been around for at least the last 5 years and all parents had been reminded of this the day before. (The reason for no football shirts is the fact the children will fight anyone who wears a rival team shirt).

The parent refused to make his son apologise because it's "fucking stupid" and I'm a "stupid old bitch" for falling into the wall.

The child was suspended for 2 days and was back in my class today having been taken away to their caravan for the weekend "as a treat"

And all this for £12.50 ph!

Did I read your hourly rate correctly!!??

I'm not in the UK but I get paid the equivalent amount to do a cruisy reception job, and got the same amount to do the cleaning! That's shocking.

Dibbydoos · 18/06/2024 01:38

I agree.

That's why so many good teachers are in private schools because class sizes are smaller and bad behaviour is asking to go to the loo during a lesson.

These teachers forfeit final salary pensions, often are not paid the same as state school teachers, so the only real difference is the kids.

There's a real under belly in our society and honestly our culture is pretty much gone.

I hope your hubby recovers fully. He should look for an L&D job in a corporate organisation as it plays to his skill set and knowledge.

Best of luck.

Not behaving like a monkey at school has nothing to do with voting Tory. I went to normal schools and I was a sensible student who got top grades. I have never voted Tory.

Peakyshelby · 18/06/2024 01:56

He has worked in one deprived school in his NQT for a year and then a school on a none deprived area for 2 years. Then went supply.

he does not know what ti do next. Obviously he will supply till he gets a new job but he does not know which way to go now.

he was a TA before this for 7 years and a pastoral mentor for 3 years so he went in with his eyes wide open.

SkyBluepinky Of Course! All those lovely holidays. That will make up for being abused wont it? Honestly I despair. My Cousin had to leave several years ago as Stress was too much .I think many (not all) parents are in a shit situation themselves ,either at low paid jobs or out of employment entirely. They dont value education, and see it as something to tolerate rather than help their DC, The home life is very poor with various partners coming and going ,The DC act up at School because they are unhappy, and dont see a future for themselves .Teachers are seen as an "enemy" and there to be taken the piss out of.I dont see any solution sadly .Little wonder that so many educate privately or home ed is it?

Me neither but what have the younger generations got to look forward to in their future especially if they come from working class backgrounds or poverty
(the two seem to go hand in hand these days)

The UK is now a divide of the haves and the have nots with the I’m alright jacks looking down their noses, but not seeing they have contributed to this chaotic society we live in by voting and condoning a callous’s government that doesn’t give a crap about the most vulnerable in society.

Is it any wonder these parents and their children don’t give a crap about authority anymore, when they’re constantly hearing negative messages about themselves by society because they had the misfortune to be born poor.

Society sets them up to fail so the haves can rub their hands in glee and feel superior.

pollyglot · 18/06/2024 02:11

Sadly, it's not just the kids, it's also the staff...it's the incompetent SLTs, the covering-up of their mistakes, blaming their "inferiors", the petty jealousies, the boot-licking of inspectors and others...being an outstanding teacher can lead one into difficulties and ill-health...
...thank God I'm retired and someone else can shoulder this shit.

I've no idea what this means and Google doesn't help, But you have misread my post if you think I blame the children. Or that my dsis blamed the children. It is the parents raising their children to be disrespectful, abusive and aggressive. That it's ok to behave like that. Those parents didn't grow up in 2024.

The reality is that a decent, kind, skilled and experienced teacher with two degrees, who had worked hard for 22 years to support and nurture children, was choked, hospitalised, terrified and reduced to tears. And that's ok with you !

You and your excuses sum up the problem perfectly.

Meadowfinch · 18/06/2024 03:08

@Cabincrew1 'middle class in their ivory towers'

And just so we are clear, I don't occupy an ivory tower. I'm a single mum from a free school meals family, still working in my 60s.

I've managed to raise my child to be a calm, decent member of society, without attacking anyone. I'm not saying I've never disagreed with a member of school staff, but I have the good manners and intelligence to avoid reducing the 'little infants' learning environment, their safe space, to a bar room brawl.

Maybe you don’t vote Tory. But we all know mums-net has its fair share who do, so they can get poppy and Sebastian in private schools with the tax breaks.

Not a day goes by without a thread denigrating parents on universal credit and feral state schools. That’s a large portion of society receiving the message they are worthless. People act accordingly.

Also maybe some of these parents attended school themselves before ofsted and the policing of bullying teachers. Maybe they have a chip on their shoulder and teach their children not to take any disrespect from authority figures.

Meadowfinch · 18/06/2024 03:42

@Cabincrew1 Most of us attended school before Ofsted existed. I didn't mention Universal Credit, and I doubt very much the man concerned was receiving it anyway since I know what he did for a job.

That's just more excuses ! There is no excuse.

Any Party that gets into power gets in by a majority vote and clearly it’s that majority that has kept the Conservatives in power for 14 years. That’s democracy.
Its also worth noting, as other PPs have also done, that school children's behaviour, respect for teachers and the institution has been declining for a long time and also during Labours term in power.

Many people are born poor and many people have and can work themselves out of that situation……if they sat down in class, shut up, work hard and don’t have parents that seek to blame teachers or others for every ill in their life.

A friend of mine only works in International oveseas schools and has enjoyed the fact that the parents value their kids being respectful.

decionsdecisions62 · 18/06/2024 04:56

DH worked in secondary schools and pupil referral units since 2004. A couple of years he moved into the FE sector and his stress levels improved. His pay dropped dramatically however.

Those people that think teachers have it easy cos they get longer holidays need to spend 1 hour with a teacher and they would soon change their minds!

I'm sorry he experienced that. Bullied on every count.

LostMyPage · 18/06/2024 05:13

My youngest has just left the large private school all my kids attended. It sounds like an idyllic bubble. There were none of these issues and my kids felt safe and received the best education. One of them in particular could have been a target for bullies but their nerdiness was embraced at the private school. The teachers seemed happy and up for having chats or a laugh with parents. Parents seemed grateful. I certainly respected the teachers a great deal, and am still friends with a couple, and had kids who were well-behaved and hated getting into trouble.

The description of some schools here is horrific and I believe it all. It reflects larger society and just the increasingly rude and shit behaviour of adults.

i am sorry this happened and I hope your husband finds another career.

babyproblems · 18/06/2024 05:16

I think the teaching exodus began a long time ago - it’s crap all round- the pay. The management, the conditions. 14 years of Tory ‘funding’ aswell has obviously got something to do with it!!! I definitely would not stay on teaching if I knew we had a Tory government that’s for sure.

Surprised at some pps on here suggesting the UK is ‘too supportive’ of people and therefore parents don’t bother working etc.. have everything handed to them on a plate. I know no one like this AT ALL. All I see in the UK is people either doing well or struggling to make ends meet, with almost zero decent help from the state. Best of luck to your partner op in sure there’ll be better options out there currently than teaching! X

The OP is not a teacher so what is your point? My husband is married to an NHS clinician but I don’t expect him to prescribe medication.

Anyway, this comment is unnecessarily rude. And the lack of commas makes your post difficult to read. I don’t normally point this stuff out, but I shall make an exception here..

In case you hadn’t noticed, there are many accounts by teachers past and present on this thread who have suffered at the hands of these children.
It isn’t the children of middle class Tory voters who will suffer but the ordinary children and civilised adults that will suffer.
