BBQ invite

Polly345 · 16/06/2024 21:01

I started a new job a couple of months ago.
Ive heard colleagues discussing a BBQ at the managers house.
Apparently this was first discussed when I was on holiday last month.
I haven't been told officially but it sounds like the whole team have been invited.
Im not sure if I should bring up the subject or wait and see in case it's a case of everybody thought I knew.
Or do I just keep quiet?

I’d keep quiet and hope, desperately, not to be invited.

TheLadyOfTheFlowers · 16/06/2024 21:09

@Gakpo 😂me too!

@Gakpo 😂me too!

Me three!

viques · 16/06/2024 21:13

Me four.

Good luck OP, and remember, if by some unlucky chance they do remember you, a previous long-standing engagement, even if totally imaginary, always top trumps a last minute invite.

FuzzyStripes · 16/06/2024 21:15

You are all my people! 🤣 I’d also keep quiet whilst finding a good excuse in case I do get asked.

RampantIvy · 16/06/2024 21:21

@Polly345 this is mumsnet where posters dislike their colleagues and never want to socialise with them.

I would wait and see, and not assume anything.

I don’t dislike any of my colleagues and I’m perfectly sociable.

Do I want to go to my line manager’s house for a BBQ? Nah.

Londonrach1 · 16/06/2024 21:24

BBQ food poisoning...keep quiet op ..you so lucky to escape this!

IdontlikePinaColada · 16/06/2024 21:24

OP is there anyone you get on particularly well with there? I'd have a quiet word with them just to say you've heard there's a BBQ, and understand if you're not invited, but just wanted to make sure.

IdontlikePinaColada · 16/06/2024 21:28

Also, although everyone else in this thread seems to think you're lucky to miss out on it, it may well be that it's expected for everyone to attend, and missing it won't make a good impression in your new job.
(Also not all team BBQs are shite)(although some definitely are 😄).

Mee5ha · 17/06/2024 09:39

Yeah people are weird on MN about socialising with colleagues. I'd mention it to another colleague and see what they say. It sounds like you're invited and the boss prob doesn't realise you were off.

PeterPedant · 17/06/2024 09:46

Just out of interest, what is it that people think the three-letter abbreviation/initialism BBQ stands for? Bored, bloated & queasy, perhaps?

It is not difficult to say or type barbecue. I've never seen/heard PT for party, WDG for wedding, GTG for get-together, etc. So why BBQ for barbecue? I've been wondering this for years.

PeterPedant · 17/06/2024 09:47

PS I would also be keeping quiet about it to avoid being invited.

fiskalunatic · 17/06/2024 10:47

@Gakpo Grin

Just a quick abbreviation

Lots of abbreviations going about...
Thanks for all replies.
My instinct is not to go but still thinking about it.

Keep quiet because they never are proper bbqs just sausage and burgers. Nothing worth worrying about.

This, because I'm normal, and would understand it would be a nice opportunity to get to know colleagues better.
