How thick are some people?

About a quarter of a mile from my home there is a McDs which is closed a few days ago for a refurbishment til around 8th August (I think). It’s off a major roundabout. Drive on the roundabout a few times a week.

Despite the whole area fenced off, most of the external walls have gone, signs with reopening date with another McDs postcode (there’s one nearer), car park taken up by portacabins and old ventilation bits etc - people are still trying to enter McDs! This is even from the side of the roundabout where you can see the building is just a shell.

How people are going to cope with McDs closed for 7.5 weeks with the schools breaking up on the second week of July.

Possibly better signage is required???

PashaMinaMio · 16/06/2024 11:32

You can’t educate pork so they want to eat beef.

Garlicker · 16/06/2024 11:32

At least they're giving you a laugh!

Marrta · 16/06/2024 11:38

It isn't a lack of intelligence though that's a different thing

BarHumbugs · 16/06/2024 11:39

Maybe they're distracted by watching the road and driving.

ThinWomansBrain · 16/06/2024 11:40

Brains befuddled by junk food

English schools break up the second week of July? I thought it was end of July?

Topseyt123 · 16/06/2024 11:41

An awful lot of people are just utterly thick. You can't argue with stupid and the road signs won't mean a thing to them.

Where does it say England?
Scottish schools break earlier, as do independent schools in England and Wales. State schools in England and Wales get more like 5.5 than 7.5 weeks of holiday too

TheYearOfSmallThings · 16/06/2024 11:49

The thing is, you drive around that roundabout several times a week, so you know exactly what is going on with it, which lane to be in to get through quickest, and you want everyone else to know the roundabout equally well and not have to think about their options while circling.

Clearly the people causing problems for you have not been on the roundabout since the construction work started, were not aware the McDonald's is closed, are trying to work it out while driving in a tight circle with a car full of squalking children, and I would argue if lots of people are confused then the signage is not adequate.

DivergentTris · 16/06/2024 11:59

I do wonder about this too.

Our petrol station had one of the petrol pumps out of order. The signs often got ignored, so we put bin bags right over them with brighter signs and people still went up and started removing them to try and get to the pumps!
Big, massive push sign on the door, many still pulled. We also had many come to the glass asking how to get in the building, and even when pointing to the door, they walked past it and had to ask someone else, and yes, it was obvious and no they were not partially sighted or anything. People were also using the door during these interactions and they still couldnt figure it out.
Another came to pick her car up but didnt know what kind of car it was, what colour it was, what she'd brought it in for, who she gave it to/spoke to and couldnt see it in the carpark - turns out it the mechanic who dealt with her had parked it right by the door she'd just walked in and it was right under her nose.

Goodness I could go on and on, so no OP I'm really not surprised and they probably do have clear signage.

spikeandbuffy · 16/06/2024 12:53

I'm not even surprised

I said to someone the other day "so Sunday, the 23rd of June"
Got back "what day is that?"

I'm not a walking calendar and I said SUNDAY Confused

That’s where I live. It varies from county to county.

When I was a kid, the schools broke up for summer end June/early July as back then factories closed for a fortnight from the first Monday in July. Went back to school the Tuesday/Wednesday before Aug BH then had BHM and Tuesday off. Now kids here go back to school Tuesday or Wednesday after the Aug BH.

A friend did see a sign a week before McDs was closing as she left the place last week. Only to be seen by those who bought McDs.

Also the app which automatically selects the closed branch has set it to the nearest one - not the one with postcode on the notice. Think they are using that one as 1. Much bigger McDs, 2. Bigger car park - it’s part of a retail Park and 3. On route to motorway.

@DivergentTris people do not read signs!
When our lottery terminal broke (it was the printer), we put signs up everywhere that we can only sell scratchcards. Plus every few minutes a colleague said loudly our lottery machine is broken. Still idiots queuing up for a few mins asking for a lucky dip. could they check their ticket or cash in a scratchcard. They moaned about it. They think we are the only retailer in the area that does lottery. I can think of four within a few minutes walk and ten more within a few minutes drive!

Username947531 · 16/06/2024 13:25

Because no amount of evidence will ever convince an idiot. Yes, many people are that thick.

Very is the answer to your title question! Signs never apply to Moi!

GasPanic · 16/06/2024 13:49

McDonalds closed ?

Simply not possible.

The golden arches pump out burger after burger for the hungry masses.

That's why people see it with their eyes, but their brain simply doesn't register.

edit : Be thankful they are not knocking on your door demanding burgers.

ll09sm · 16/06/2024 13:50

Vast majority of people are thick. It makes you worry when you think they can all vote.

User1974 · 16/06/2024 13:53

Well as many people are below average intelligence as above it. Think of the very very clever people you know, how much cleverer they are than yourself. Now think about people being that much less intelligent. There are a lot of very very stupid people around and it really is not their fault any more than it is the fault of someone who is ugly or short or whatever.

The one's around me are from the 17th July. It depends on if they are religious and have days off for that.

Whycantiwinmillionsandsquillions · 16/06/2024 13:58

Could be either poor signage or dense people.
During covid we had no less than 3 signs telling people not to enter the building without an appointment.
You would be amazed how many people walked passed all three signs and still tried to come in.
Sometimes our department closes before the building does. We lock our door and put a closed sign on. Still we get people trying the door and trying to get our attention.
I always mouth back we are closed, then turn away and get on with finishing for the day.

BiscuityBoyle · 16/06/2024 14:01

A year or so ago one end of our road closed. The road is u shaped and doesn’t go anywhere, it just comes off a main road and back on it further down. The main road was closed at the end of our road so there were signs at the other end saying our road was closed as you couldn’t get anywhere. I lost count of the number of people I saw driving down our road thinking they could bypass the closure.

Whycantiwinmillionsandsquillions · 16/06/2024 14:16

I had to laugh at the bluntness of a pre recorded telephone message another department had had to make. It basically said if you are calling for X Y or Z then you need to go online and do it.
If you stayed on the line and asked a member of staff about X y or Z they would simply hang up on you!
