How thick are some people?

About a quarter of a mile from my home there is a McDs which is closed a few days ago for a refurbishment til around 8th August (I think). It’s off a major roundabout. Drive on the roundabout a few times a week.

Despite the whole area fenced off, most of the external walls have gone, signs with reopening date with another McDs postcode (there’s one nearer), car park taken up by portacabins and old ventilation bits etc - people are still trying to enter McDs! This is even from the side of the roundabout where you can see the building is just a shell.

How people are going to cope with McDs closed for 7.5 weeks with the schools breaking up on the second week of July.

A year or so ago one end of our road closed. The road is u shaped and doesn’t go anywhere, it just comes off a main road and back on it further down. The main road was closed at the end of our road so there were signs at the other end saying our road was closed as you couldn’t get anywhere. I lost count of the number of people I saw driving down our road thinking they could bypass the closure.

Road closed signs are one of my biggest sources of anger, not in your situation but when a 45 mile long road has a 'road closed' sign at the start with no indication of where the closure is drives me mad! Coming off the A14 at the A11 exit, 'road ahead closed', ie the A11, it's a 40+ mile long road, a major artery to other towns, it needed an indication of where it was closed. Rant over.

Vast majority of people are thick. It makes you worry when you think they can all vote.

They believe in every word newspapers write - esp The Sun and Daily Mail.

That caused Brexit

I think 'thick' is a bit unreasonable. Lots of people are very unobservant. You see it on the tube - 10 announcements saying 'the next train won't take passengers' and yet 20 people try to board, on autopilot.

I used to work at boots and at least one person a week injured themselves using hydrogen peroxide contact lens solution wrongly. Despite big warning signs and stickers slapped all over the box.

I'm sure we all do it to some extent

I'm not even surprised

I said to someone the other day "so Sunday, the 23rd of June"
Got back "what day is that?"

I'm not a walking calendar and I said SUNDAY Confused

While trying to do some forward planning I once asked somebody what days Easter fell on this year, so I've no room to talk about anybody else Grin

Our road was resurfaced a few years back. There were barriers and massive 'Road Closed' signs at both ends, the whole road was dug up and there were big noisy tarmac trucks and rollers everywhere, and some guy stood at the bus stop (which had a big yellow notice stuck over the timetable) for about ten minutes.

Sound like pretty good examples of 'thick' behaviour.

If you work in customer service, you soon work out that the vast majority of the general population are thick as mince.

Loub55 · 16/06/2024 15:58

I'm wondering if you live in my town OP 😁

My local Maccys is also closed as its being extended (off a large roundabout in a retail park, near a dual carriageway that leads to motorway).

I haven't noticed people trying to get in, but it is definitely obvious it is not open and building work is happening!! 😂

saltinesandcoffeecups · 16/06/2024 16:08

Who knew there are so many perfect people here on mumsnet. It’s a regular Mensa gathering.

DogInATent · 16/06/2024 16:19

Just remind yourself that half the population are less intelligent than the average. It's the Fifty Percent Rule. Just mutter it under your breath, roll your eyes, and move on..

Goodadvice1980 · 16/06/2024 16:20

You are missing a trick here OP, get ya burger 🍔 van out and start flogging 😂

GruffaloBill · 16/06/2024 16:25

Very thick. Where I live, the council have given everyone a new bin for paper and cardboard, and you would not believe the amount of moaning that's going on from people who just can't figure out which bin to put things in, despite crystal clear guidance! Hardly rocket science 🙄

Newtoallthis2023 · 16/06/2024 16:25

Are you in G.Y by any chance?

HollyKnight · 16/06/2024 16:44

People who know the area are probably just on autopilot watching the road, not looking at the buildings around them.

The closed McDs near me isn’t near a retail park.

The alternative place is in a retail park about 1.5 miles from the motorway

My council has one recycling bin which you put every recycling item in - cans, glass, plastic, cardboard etc.

Yet on the spotted groups on FB get “can you put milk bottles in the recycling bin?”

This thread reminds me of my recent 'team building' day. We were split up into groups and one of our tasks was a discussion on WW2. One of us in the group didn't know what years the war started/ended. I wasn't expecting them to know the precise dates and I don't know them either, but surely the years 1939 and 1945 should be common knowledge.

These people including the McD sheeple in the OP are old enough to vote in our next government FFS.

A friend did see a sign a week before McDs was closing as she left the place last week. Only to be seen by those who bought McDs.

Also the app which automatically selects the closed branch has set it to the nearest one - not the one with postcode on the notice. Think they are using that one as 1. Much bigger McDs, 2. Bigger car park - it’s part of a retail Park and 3. On route to motorway.

I didn't understand any of that.

BucketBouquet · 16/06/2024 17:36

My gym had a sign at reception the other week saying “Sauna closed for maintenance”. There was also a large sign on the door of the sauna itself. I was sitting in the jacuzzi, which is next to it, for about ten minutes and at least five people tried to enter the sauna. They stood around in utter bewilderment when they realised there was heat, before staring at the sign as if it was written in hieroglyphics.

I swear most people these days walk around in a total daze.

A vast majority did not vote for brexit.

The elderly did. There was a clear correlation between age of voter and likelihood to vote Brexit. Some studies suggest that voting ages should be in line with jury service ages (18-75).

Oh dear 🤦‍♀️ I've worked in a lot of public facing roles in various industries, and nothing surprises me anymore 😆

SickofSoup · 16/06/2024 17:59

I think you’re in Leicestershire near me OP as I’ve seen this madness at the McDonald’s too 😂

merryhouse · 16/06/2024 18:02

soup given the factory fortnight info, I'd say it's quite likely ;-)

But asking about milk bottles in the recycling - I think that's fair enough, because strictly speaking milk bottles should go back to the dairy so if you've got a few strays it's reasonable to wonder if the recycling people would tell you off

What did people used to do wrong with hydrogen peroxide solution? I’ve used it for over 20 years and never had an issue, the warnings on the label are pretty straightforward Confused
