To think these people are scum of the very very lowest disgusting order

A school friend died a few weeks ago. I've not seen him for years but did get on well with him and he was a friend on facebook and we'd chat occasionally.

His funeral was yesterday. In the morning I got a friend invite from something called "School Friend Funeral live stream" I didn't see it until later in the day...

But some people did... were asked to make a payment to the streaming company for access... there was no live stream... then later someone got suspicious and started trying to make video calls on messenger which were dropped time after time then sent messages asking who it was which were ignored...

Turned out to be a scam. People had paid and then found that there was a recurring payment set up on their cards..

AIBU to think this is perhaps one of the nastiest scams I've ever stumbled across? how can anyone sink that f*cking low?

Apparently it's a known scam. His poor family have been through enough without these "people"

Sorry not even sure AIBU is the right place for this... but I'm so angry ... also thought it would be a good place for raising awareness because not many people are going to expect to be scammed in this vile manner

Yeah that’s utterly vile. Sorry for your loss.

BobbyBiscuits · 15/06/2024 19:21

That's utterly horrible! I hope you can make everyone you know aware. I'm not on FB or SM but I'm so sorry you had to deal with this, during such a sad time. I hope you reported it to FB?
What total scum.

Echobelly · 15/06/2024 19:21

Wow - that is low. I came across this kind of scam for the first and only time so far during lockdown where a scammer piggybacked on a real online event where as soon as I put my card in and couldn't join I realised it had been a scam and cancelled that card immediately. But scanning FB for death announcements and doing that is absolutely vile.

PTSDBarbiegirl · 15/06/2024 19:22

Scum fuck shit nuts.

scum of the very very lowest disgusting order is an insult to scum of the very very lowest disgusting order - there aren't the words to describe how despicable these inhuman beings are.

Well done for raising awareness of this scam, OP, and sorry for your loss.

OP, Which Magazine do an online alert specifically for scams. It's free ( I think, but I pay for the magazine so could be wrong).
It's monthly and is so good.
It might be worth contacting them and telling them. I think this is exactly the kind of scam they would investigate and alert their readers to.
I'm so sorry for what you and the other mourners have had to go through.

WiseKhakiGoose · 15/06/2024 19:42

I agree with you OP.

I never heard of this type of scam but it's so low...

I can't even call those people who do it "people", because I expect people to have some kind of feelings.

listsandbudgets · 15/06/2024 20:05

@Oneearringlost thank you I've used their scam reporting tool hoping they will follow it through of they haven't done something on it already

I'm sorry about your old friend. Yes several people in my area were targeted for someone who died young recently. I agree, it's a really low scummy act.

DuesToTheDirt · 15/06/2024 20:40

This happened to a friend. Horrible experience. Just how immoral does a person have to be to do this?

LakeTiticaca · 15/06/2024 22:19

Shocking but not surprising sadly.
There are no depths to which some people won't sink

Itllfalloff · 15/06/2024 22:22

This is the worst - has just happened to our family… the funeral of a 19 year old who died in a tragic accident too, as if that wasn’t traumatic enough.

Luckily a family member realised quickly & and managed to warn people.

listsandbudgets · 15/06/2024 22:34

@Itllfalloff I am so sorry you were put through that in what was already a shattering situation Flowers

I honestly don't understand how their minds work not sure I want to either.

I spoke to DS (11) about it earlier and his theory was that statistically most people who die are older so probably most of their friends are older too and might be more confused and more easily taken in so scammers have started targeting funerals. Obviously a lot more to it than that but he may have hit on one of the reasons

But mainly I think its because these low lives are !"£$%^``#&()#%%
&!"£$$%^&&*() - if I wrote what I was actually thinking I'd probably be thrown off mumsnet for profanity!!

@listsandbudgets I'm very sorry to hear about your friend.

you're right, they're utter scum. I won't post what I'm thinking they deserve.
