What does everyone even do in the evenings?

Whenthechipshitthefan · 13/06/2024 18:32

Once the kids are in bed we
Eat (if we didn't with kids)
Do washing up and laundry
Collapse in front of TV
Occasionally we have a "date" night when we
Eat
Crash in front of a film on TV or occasionally play a board game

And I can't think of any other date nights that we realistically will do . All the websites say things like "build a fort" " paint a picture" but that seems like faff and more clearing up to do.

What does everyone do on a nice staying on night?

On a rare night that I’m in then eat and tidy up until 8ish, bit if pottering in the garden, then tv and read.

most evenings I’m out - Pilates classes, bell ringing, book club, work meetings, random other meetings, driving children around, volunteering

Anyotherdude · 13/06/2024 21:58

I drink.
And I know things.
(lighthearted!)

Anotherdaydone · 13/06/2024 22:11

Walk dog. Play tennis

Judellie · 13/06/2024 22:14

Eat
Dishwasher
Play dominoes and/or scrabble with the teenagers. Or I play Wordscapes and every time I get extra words I delete a page of emails (so if I have two extra words, I delete two pages, I do check first to see if there's anything I have to deal with, car insurance reminder or whatever).
May enter the odd competition but this is when the teens decide to talk most to me and I can't do two things (properly) at once.
Bath
Moisturise feet with Aveeno (had a bad case of athlete's foot last year and don't want another).
Read a book or read Mumsnet
Sort washing or other housework
DD and I would have been cycling but it's never really stopped raining; we've managed a walk sometimes.
Watch tv sometimes.
Tonight I have done absolutely nothing except moisturise my feet, but I've been at my friend's all day then met other friend's at McD for tea (which was cold!) then went to card factory where kids bought Father's Day cards and I got 10 cards for £1

TakingTheHorseToFrance · 13/06/2024 22:17

Walk dog
Work out in my bedroom
Shower, defluff, tan
Do laundry
Clean
After 10pm watch TV in bedroom so I'm not tempted to eat.

I've lost a stone since March and it's a combo of the walking and evening work outs that have really helped. I do my workouts before kids go to bed.

Cocopogo · 13/06/2024 22:18

Eat, chat about random nonsense, have sex

Meadowlands · 13/06/2024 22:23

We got into board games during COVID and that has continued.
Also recently got a second hand table tennis table which is great on summer evenings.
Keeps us away from screens

WhatFlavourIsIt · 13/06/2024 22:24

Eat
Drink wine
Watch TV
Scroll on my phone

CharlotteBog · 13/06/2024 22:26

I usually do some sort of sport in the evening, or if not something active then a walk. I have a desk job and love my exercise so it's my time to do something I enjoy.
Cook dinner. Eat with DS.
15 yo DS goes to bed about 10. I'll often have left the kitchen tidying until then, so I'll put on an audio book on my headphones and tidy up.
Then I have some fruit a decaf coffee and watch some telly before bed, Candy Crush and reading. I always intend to do something admin wise from list, but rarely do.
I am single.

Gowlett · 13/06/2024 22:29

My child goes to bed late, we chat & play with him.

WhyamInotvomiting · 13/06/2024 22:31

We do exactly the same as you! Except I also read a lot, and listen to the radio or podcasts sometimes. DH often listens to podcasts whilst he washes up. He plays his switch or does sudoku and other similar puzzles. We both sometimes do crosswords together. When we are not exhausted, I sometimes do a short workout at home (body weight exercises mostly) and DH sometimes goes for a short run. Now and then we have a group of friends round for drinks, snacks, and board/card games together which is always fun too.

PearlKoala · 13/06/2024 22:39

I run or do yoga then shower, get in my comfies and do some work. I'm 38 and have a goal of a complete career change by the time I'm 40 so I work towards that pretty much every evening I'm at home. Dh reads or watches something on the TV. It's boring but it's important to me so I'm getting it done.

Invent · 13/06/2024 22:41

I struggle.

I used to think " after work" was my real life and now I think work is my actual life.

SwordToFlamethrower · 13/06/2024 22:45

We talk to one another, my DH reads to me (we have the same interests in books so it makes sense), we play games, be them TTRPG or video games. We are playing a Star Trek game and Hogwarts Legacy atm. We have sex in the lounge sometimes, we do a few chores sometimes, and sometimes we watch something. We also do arts and crafts, write, plan camps and costumes for conventions etc. Our lives are quite varied and interesting!

We only watch the telly for something specific, we don't watch the telly for telly's sake.

CloudywMeatballs · 13/06/2024 22:50

Build a fort??? Where did you see that suggested?

BiscuitDreams · 13/06/2024 22:50

Shower, tidy up, play with cat and then work on the laptop from about 9-11pm. Then bed. DH has not been well so he goes to bed early at the moment. Sometimes he hangs out with me for a bit and we watch videos/chat/have sex/sit in the garden. Mostly work though, and when I get to bed I play stupid games on my phone too long and then I'm tired in the morning.

TRACKOK · 13/06/2024 22:52

Once the kids are in bed we watch telly, read, chat, do some work or life admin, play games (board and on the Switch) and do jigsaws. Our youngest is still tiny and currently cluster feeds between about 8 and 10 so I'm generally stuck on the sofa with her and we've watched a lot of TV. We were rewatching taskmaster but I kept laughing so much the baby would pop off the nipple so now we've switched to the much more calming X files.
I cannot understand all these people who go out and do hobbies in the evening. Once I'm home I'm not going out again for love nor money bar emergencies and, under extreme duress, school related stuff like parents evening.

I need to lose a stone. I lost 1.5 in 2020 simply by not eating between meals or after dinner. Now I've slipped up again. This is a great idea. I just need to stay upstairs away from food every evening!!!

suki1964 · 13/06/2024 23:03

During the lockdowns we turned our garage into a bar and our garden into a more leisure space.

We "meet" in the bar after work and have a wind down drink whilst we share the day, then its the usual get the tea on, throw on a wash, do some chores. Dinner and stuff is over by 8pm when I go out for my evening walk with a friend, he will be doing his stuff -whatever that may be - and we join again around 9pm where we will watch something we are both following or go sit in the hot tub and sing along to cheesy music from our youth :)

Date nights are the same as a previous poster, a few drinks, nibbles, and watching concerts online or we will go play a few games of pool or cards

Once a week ( at least ) we either have friends to ours or we go to friends. Very casual, work clothes are ok, no need to make an effort, its the having a bit of fun thats important

IMHO Its ok to have different interests from your partner and its ok to go find time to do them, but its also important to have some shared time thats not just "life" Our hour together in the evening after work, just us, is important to both of us. We do our serious talking then, theres just the two of us and no distractions

mumda · 13/06/2024 23:03

If it was summer I'd be out weeding and pottering. However as it's late autumn weather wise I'm sketching and painting and watching TV.

BeachHutsAndDeckchairs · 13/06/2024 23:30

Eat

cherish123 · 13/06/2024 23:50

Early dinner
Teenager lifts
Tidy kitchen
Get lunches ready
Usually relax after 10 - we all watch TV for 30mins. DC bed. I read for 30mins or DH and I watch TV. I go to bed 11pm

CrispEater2000 · 13/06/2024 23:50

DS gets to bed around 9:30pm, after that if neither of us heads out with friends DP will tend to work and or watch some TV, I'll tend to work and or play games. Occasionally we'll binge a series we're both interested in but unless I'm really enjoying it watching TV feels a bit too passive for me. I'll do it when I'm too tired for anything else.

By the time midnight rolls round that 2.5 hours isn't very long anyways.

cherish123 · 13/06/2024 23:51

Weekends - later dinner and tv; couple of drinks; later bed

jerawel · 14/06/2024 00:48

Our dcs go to bed relatively late, so we don't get much time to relax. We do most of the chores while the dc are in bed so we can do more fun things with them during the day - so meal prep, cooking, packed lunches, cleaning, hanging laundry, tidying, sewing repais and uniform labelling. All the other family admin - banking, emails, booking events and holidays, online shopping. Some DIY if it's not too noisy. Reorganising cupboards and rooms.

Not much time for leisure activities in the evenings. Neither of us go out in the evening, we don't want to use a babysitter or have one of us looking after both dcs while the other goes out. DH sometimes watches TV, I prefer to browse on my phone. Will get more time for my hobbies when dc2 goes to school as I work pt.
