To remind everyone to actually vote?

LadyFeatheringt0n · 13/06/2024 07:33

The conservatives etc are now coming out suggesting a super majority.

When this sort of thing is said, it can make people think they don't need to vote, and its a foregone conclusion.

I know I'm preaching to the choir here but....

If you do not like the current government, you do need to go and actually vote in a different one.

There is often less of a majority than anyone expects because the swing voters everyone wants don't always turn up on the day.

Its more important than ever that everyone in this country has a say.

Be counted - vote.

Support your friends and neighbours to vote. Watch the kids for half an hour so a busy mum can make it, drive a disabled neighbour there. Help people to organise a postal vote who may need one.

It's preaching to the converted...
But yes, people should vote, despite there being no decent party to vote for. People died for sufferage

ssd · 13/06/2024 08:10

I agree. I hate reading on here people won't vote. Or will mess up their ballot paper. FFS.

User3456 · 13/06/2024 08:14

I will be voting definitely - postal vote.
Be aware if you're trying to avoid catching airborne infections, they may ask you to remove your mask for the photo i.d. check (hopefully they should do this outside but good to be aware).
As an aside, if you usually don't wear a mask but on polling day you have any symptoms, please wear a mask to vote too!

It's suffrage 😜

Spoiling your vote is a legitimate thing to do, actually. If no party actually represents you, it's fine to spoil your vote. No party is owed our vote, and given how batshit and / or fucking useless our main parties are, I imagine loads of people are in a quandary who to vote for.

I do suggest checking out your indie options first, however, if you have one. But if you want to spoil your vote, do it.

Didimum · 13/06/2024 08:26

I think the idea of people not voting because of this is a bit of a myth (or probably a fear). The majority prediction exists at this size precisely because people are so geared up for change. That doesn’t disappear in a matter of weeks, certainly not after the years we’ve had to endure. Those I know voting Labour who think it’s a foregone conclusion cannot wait until the 4th and are rearing to get to their polling station. This sort of news also incites people to get out there and be part of it.

CertainAppealToIt · 13/06/2024 08:27

I hate the emotional blackmail some attempt to use to coerce people (mainly women when suffrage is mentioned) into voting.

I'm grateful for the right to vote. I'm grateful that I have the same rights as a man in such respects. I use my vote whenever I deem it worthy, in the same way men are able to.

In this coming election, no. I've proactively decided not to vote or support the total shit show of a system in any way. No party is worthy and I have absolutely zero preference over who wins.

I'm glad I have the right to withhold my vote in the same way as men do.

Has that made you feel better?

I was teasing her @ASighMadeOfStone since she corrected the OP. She took it in the spirit it was intended ☺️

Lifelikinotdothinki · 13/06/2024 08:52

I’m still deciding who to vote for. I always vote, and yes women died so we could vote. There’s nothing wrong with remembering that.

PTSDBarbiegirl · 13/06/2024 08:52

Adults can make their own choices, are you canvassing or taking action in any way off Mumsnet?

I agree with this, the main parties need to know a large number of the public don't have any confidence in them. Promising this and that when they know full well they won't deliver on it.

For the first time ever I really don't know who I want to vote for.

RubySloth · 13/06/2024 09:01

Everyone should vote or just the people making the "right" choice? 😂 As you are reminding people to vote in your title but then go on to say, if you are sick of the current government, which indicates you don't really mean it.

DogInATent · 13/06/2024 09:06

I don't care so much who anyone votes for as long as they vote. I don't care if they spoil their ballot paper, it still gets counted under spoiled papers. And the trip to the polling booth might give them time to think about making a choice other than spoiling the paper.

What I hate is people that can't be arsed, sit at home and do nothing.

You make the effort.

Bringonthesunforthewashing · 13/06/2024 09:10

Will we get voting cards through the post? Or do you just show up with id?

yumyumyumy · 13/06/2024 09:10

I always vote, but voting is a choice and what others do isn't something I'd get riled up about.

You get a card, but it's not needed, just ID.

Already got mine but you don't need to take it. ID you do need.

@LadyFeatheringt0n I agree with the importance of voting but not 'preaching to the choir'. Doesn't even make sense.

@Bringonthesunforthewashing

i don't know if it's different in each area but I have already received my 'card' it just gives details of when to vote, where to vote & that you need ID etc. nothing about the candidates or anything.

Life2Short4Nonsense · 13/06/2024 09:22

I find the current results of the poll concerning.

However uphappy you are with the government or individual parties or society at large, your vote is still the loudest and strongest voice you will ever have.

Yes, you won't get retweeted for it or get likes or responses or kudos. On the surface, voting is a silent and thankless process, however this is far from the truth. Likes on social media will never be as powerful as voting. It is a silent and anonymous power.

If if you lose the right to vote, social media will never make up for it, especially if you get shadow-banned. That will never hapen with voting in a free democracy.

AmelieTaylor · 13/06/2024 09:25

@LadyFeatheringt0n that's a very patronising post. I do think it's important to vote, and I'm of the opinion that if you don't vote you don't get to whinge & bitch about the govt and will happily tell people that.

unfortunately voting doesn't mean you get what you want, but you do get to whinge about it 🤣🤣

Moonmelodies · 13/06/2024 09:26

If someone doesn't care who their MP is, nor who is in government, why should they vote?
Surely better for everyone that they stay out of it and leave it to those that do.

ll09sm · 13/06/2024 09:27

It will be a super majority for Labour. It’s a foregone conclusion.
