To remind everyone to actually vote?

The conservatives etc are now coming out suggesting a super majority.

When this sort of thing is said, it can make people think they don't need to vote, and its a foregone conclusion.

I know I'm preaching to the choir here but....

If you do not like the current government, you do need to go and actually vote in a different one.

There is often less of a majority than anyone expects because the swing voters everyone wants don't always turn up on the day.

Its more important than ever that everyone in this country has a say.

Be counted - vote.

Support your friends and neighbours to vote. Watch the kids for half an hour so a busy mum can make it, drive a disabled neighbour there. Help people to organise a postal vote who may need one.

@Bringonthesunforthewashing

i don't know if it's different in each area but I have already received my 'card' it just gives details of when to vote, where to vote & that you need ID etc. nothing about the candidates or anything.

Your polling card never lists the candidates. That's on the election slip you get given at the polling station.

Thanks for the heads up OP 😀

It will be a super majority for Labour. It’s a foregone conclusion.

There's no such thing as either a super majority or a foregone conclusion with UK general elections.

There absolutely is.

I agree. I hate reading on here people won't vote. Or will mess up their ballot paper. FFS.

Me too. IMO they don’t deserve to have the vote.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 13/06/2024 09:33

NoWordForFluffy · 13/06/2024 09:12

You get a card, but it's not needed, just ID.

Apparently it’s easier for the polling clerks if you take it, so we always do.

Are you saying those were foregone conclusions or super majorities?

There is no such thing as a super majority in UK politics. There's either a working majority or an absolute majority. If you think any differently, explain what you think a super majority is.

There are no foregone conclusions in politics. Opinion polls can be, and frequently are, wrong.

Well, unlucky for you that we live in a democracy where we all have a vote, whether we use it or not.

I think people with your attitude are worse than people who don't vote / spoil their vote, frankly.

Churchview · 13/06/2024 09:35

Is spoiling your voting paper not just useless though?
Surely one of the parties must in some way lean more towards your own principles?

If you don't vote are you just enabling who ever wins even if you disagree with them completely?

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 13/06/2024 09:35

NoWordForFluffy · 13/06/2024 08:21

Spoiling your vote is a legitimate thing to do, actually. If no party actually represents you, it's fine to spoil your vote. No party is owed our vote, and given how batshit and / or fucking useless our main parties are, I imagine loads of people are in a quandary who to vote for.

I do suggest checking out your indie options first, however, if you have one. But if you want to spoil your vote, do it.

I was once so disenchanted with the whole sorry lot of them, I voted for the Monster Raving Loony candidate. But I’d never not vote.

TeamPolin · 13/06/2024 09:38

I'm excited to vote for the first time in ages. Our right-wing, entitled prick of a Tory MP, (who has had a fairly safe majority for decades) is actually in danger of losing his seat now. Literally every vote matters in my constituency. I am seriously tempted to pull an all-nighter and watch the results come in.

I'm quite happy to spoil my vote if there is nobody to vote for. Sometimes there is no party to vote for (depending on the choice in your constituency). We never get many choices outside of the main parties here, so spoiling is sometimes the only option for others in the same boat as me (I don't have a least worst out of the 4 main parties, and my only other options are Reform - nope! - and an indie who hasn't responded to my questions yet).

The people that do it say that as spoiled votes get counted, it's not a wasted vote.
But obviously that's semantics.

It gets counted (does it?) and then put in a cupboard gathering dust while whoever gets into power runs every aspect of your life for the next 5 years and you had no say in it.

CHIRIBAYA · 13/06/2024 09:52

The adverserial political system we have in this country is by nature, designed to encourage polarity and division and this is the last thing we need right now. I have always voted but looking at the candidates in my area, my heart sinks. Labour looking like winning not because they have valid, meaningful policies but because the Tories are so appalling. I suspect a lot of people voting for Labour don't even know what their policies are. I prefer mindful voting, which this year means no vote, as I refuse to make a choice between a dog shit sandwich or a cat shit sandwich. It's the system that's rotten and needs radical change or we will keep getting the same old same old. The usual 'change' tropes being trotted out; just be honest and say nothing is going to change. So no, I'll not be guilted into voting for a candidate that does not represent my values and perpetuates a politicial system that offers up the current diabolical choices.

NoWordForFluffy · 13/06/2024 09:54

Hear hear, @CHIRIBAYA!

SnackFish · 13/06/2024 09:56

Not voting, no ID.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 13/06/2024 09:57

IMO there should be a box to tick on the ballot paper to say, ‘None of the above inspires me with the slightest confidence.’

All such votes would then be counted.

NoWordForFluffy · 13/06/2024 10:13

A 'None of the above' option would be great. I have a very vague recollection (may have made it up!) that somebody was refused permission to name a party with that as their name. Imagine how many votes they'd have got (hence being refused, assuming my brain hasn't fabricated the entire thing!).

LadyFeatheringt0n · 13/06/2024 10:14

Everyone should vote or just the people making the "right" choice? 😂

Everyone. Whichever way you vote. I'm not here to judge your views, you're entitled to them.

There are people on this thread who thought they couldn't vote without ID.

If ive helped one person access their right to vote the thread hasn't been a waste.

No I won't vote

wastingtimeonhere · 13/06/2024 11:43

I honestly don't know who to vote for! They are all shit!
my wish list:
mass social housing build.
investment but reapprasial of NHS services.
build special schools, adequate provision for all kids at every ability level.

At the very least an intelligence test for every MP- knowing what a woman is would be an indicator.
