To ask if you drink alcohol everyday?

knockknockw · 12/06/2024 19:39

I’m having a break from alcohol as I’ve drank far too much recently. I’m about 10 days alcohol free atm.

Been thinking about my drinking a lot recently, and I’ve realised whenever I try to keep 3-5 days alcohol free, it inevitably creeps up again until im drinking everyday again. Not a lot mind, one or two a day and always with dinner, (more on weekends)

does anyone else drink daily with dinner?

And if you don’t drink, how’s life without alcohol?

I drink maybe 5-6 units over Christmas and New year then tee total the rest of the year.
i always have a wine glass with dinner though, but its filled with kombucha! 😁

i have spent over 20 hrs as a nurse specialising in gastroenterology (which includes alcohol related problems). I've seen people as young as early thirties looking like frail, confused old men and women....not to mention those who suffer painful and terrifying ends due to alcoholism.
So it's going to stay rare special occasion thing for me!

It’s part of the reason why I’m stopping for a while, my skin is awful and I can’t help thinking alcohol is one of the reasons for that, or isn’t helping

Tbh mine does look better for cutting right back

Wrapunzel · 12/06/2024 21:06

I drink more nights than I don't but usually one glass of wine. Try to have mon/tues off as a minimum and look forward to sharing a bottle of decent wine at home with DH on a Friday. I think 10 units would be my average per week. I'm not too fussed about cutting down other than the cost!

Jegersur · 12/06/2024 21:10

I don’t drink alcohol at all, in the main. I might have one glass of wine a couple of times a year. It’s for health reasons.

AdoraBell · 12/06/2024 21:10

I don’t drink alcohol every day. I opened a bottle of wine on Sunday, used a little in bolognaise tonight and there’s still about a glass in the bottle. DH and I have had 2 glasses and DD2, 22 age, has had half of a glass.

HowardTJMoon · 12/06/2024 21:10

I'll have a few beers at the weekend. I'm happy with that.

WappityWabbit · 12/06/2024 21:11

I never drink alcohol these days as I don't like the taste of it or the way it affects me and makes me feel sluggish.

I used to have a Baileys at Christmas as I quite liked the taste but would be really happy if you could buy an alcohol free version. 😂

If you want to reduce the drinking permanently then you probably need to work out why you reach for a glass of wine rather than say a cup of tea.

Is it boredom, habit, the taste or something else? If you're drinking to change how you feel then you're likely becoming a problem drinker and should consider asking for professional help.

I've always been quite a heavy drinker. I have an addictive personality. I worked long and hard and drank like a fish. However I retired to Spain when I was in my early 50s and could really drink for England. A few large gt s with a couple if bottles of wine most nights if staying in, more if out. Ive slowly dropped down and apart from holidays, I only drink once a week and then only a bottle
I'm 72 now and enjoy my drinking but feel I have some control over it.

papadontpreach2me · 12/06/2024 21:13

No, maybe a couple of times a year. I'm not a big drinker.

buffyslayer · 12/06/2024 21:17

Drink a couple of times a year
So December I got very very drunk on a Christmas do (the room was spinning at 11am...)
I had a glass of wine last week with a meal out

That's it

pointythings · 12/06/2024 21:19

I used to, but I gave it up because I saw how much my late husband was drinking and that made me think about my own intake. What triggered it was pouring myself a glass of wine when I had a stinking cold, and realising I wouldn't be able to taste it at all. It was pure habit.

So I did a dry month, with the plan that if I found it hard, I wouldn't drink again ever. It was a piece of cake and ever since then I've been a light weekend drinker only.

determinedtomakethiswork · 12/06/2024 21:20

I've been on the weightloss drug Mounjaro for two weeks and the thought of having a drink hasn't crossed my mind once. Previously I had a couple of drinks every night, rarely missed. I need to lose quite a bit of weight but actually the way it's affected the way i drink is an even bigger benefit really.

Onand · 12/06/2024 21:22

I don’t drink because my father was a heavy drinker, not quite alcoholic but it gave him a jeckyl and Hyde personality which I’d never want for myself. Life is good without it, you spend less, have fewer groggy days, no headaches, weight easy to manage.

Riversideandrelax · 12/06/2024 21:26

I generally never drink at home - only at Christmas really. Would have a glass if someone bought a bottle round but that is pretty rare. If we go out for dinner I'll often have one or 2 glasses of wine or a cocktail - maybe once a month. I think life without continuous alcohol is better. You sleep better, you feel better. And you can enjoy the occasional drink.

NewName24 · 12/06/2024 21:26

I haven't voted as I am not clear what you are asking IBU or not.

To answer your question, no, I don't drink every day.
Indeed I don't drink every week.

Riversideandrelax · 12/06/2024 21:26

For me it is also about modelling sensible drinking to my DC.

Pancakehut · 12/06/2024 21:27

Rarely drink as I’ve hit my 40s it just doesn’t agree with me - causes awful headaches and insomnia. So now I have to decide whether it’s worth it. Last drink I had was in March, will probably have a cocktail or two on holiday and then Xmas

Alicewinn · 12/06/2024 21:28

Life without alcohol is sharp, bright, alive & painful but the painful bits are processed better without (imo)

NoraLuka · 12/06/2024 21:29

I only ever drink at weekends, and I often have weekends when I don’t drink at all. I only have a couple of beers as I don’t like wine or spirits, and have always been able to take or leave alcohol. If I was told I could never drink again, I wouldn’t care. That’s just luck though, and I wish I could feel the same about cigarettes.

Also I have DP who does tend to drink far too much. He’s really cut back over the past few months, and I want him to stay like that so always try to do stuff where drink isn’t involved.

intherough · 12/06/2024 21:32

Elphame · 12/06/2024 19:50

Yes most days.

Quite happy about my alcohol intake.

lol

Hesma · 12/06/2024 21:34

No, I drink a few times a year but alcohol doesn’t feature regularly in my life. For no ther reason than I can’t be bothered

Xyz1234567 · 12/06/2024 21:37

I maybe have one glass of wine at Christmas. Now I'm in my 50s even 2 glasses of wine would leave me feeling rough for a couple of days. I've also given up coffee. Next on the list is sugar. It's a barrel of laughs getting older. But seriously take control of your drinking now.

RickyGervaislovesdogs · 12/06/2024 21:41

Would love to! But it’s so bad for you, so no.

mitogoshi · 12/06/2024 21:42

No, drink mostly at weekends and out of the house

Gameofmoans81 · 12/06/2024 21:45

I have half a glass a wine every night while I cook dinner and a pint or two at the weekend. Whenever I’ve tried cutting back I feel no different whatsoever!
