To ask if you drink alcohol everyday?

knockknockw · 12/06/2024 19:39

I’m having a break from alcohol as I’ve drank far too much recently. I’m about 10 days alcohol free atm.

Been thinking about my drinking a lot recently, and I’ve realised whenever I try to keep 3-5 days alcohol free, it inevitably creeps up again until im drinking everyday again. Not a lot mind, one or two a day and always with dinner, (more on weekends)

does anyone else drink daily with dinner?

And if you don’t drink, how’s life without alcohol?

I never drink at home so my frequency depends on how busy my social calendar is. Certainly not daily or even weekly.

Lesina · 12/06/2024 19:59

Currently taking a 90 day break from alcohol and apart from the very odd ‘ it’s a nice evening a pub garden would be nice’ thought I haven’t missed it. Prior to that I was drinking every night. Hoping this will be a complete reset and I am using the time to do things that I have always wanted to do. Hoping to find some real replacement activity. The 90 days ends just before I go on holiday so a bit of a decision approaches

Createausername1970 · 12/06/2024 20:03

High days and holidays, as the saying goes.

I can go two or three months without a drink.

Alcohol gives me indigestion, even just a glass with an evening meal can cause it. It's not fun being up all night, burning on the inside.

I used to drink more in my 20s and 30s, probably every weekend in the pub or clubs, but it tailed off once I was into my 40s. Now I am in my 60s and I am just not bothered.

WhenSunnyGetsBlue · 12/06/2024 20:03

I'm all or nothing. Haven't touched alcohol for over a year and feel loads better for it. If I had a beer, guaranteed within a couple of weeks I'd be having G&Ts for breakfast. I'm best saying way clear. Don't miss it at all.

PeachPairPlum · 12/06/2024 20:04

Most days but have moved to having 1 day a week alcohol free. Usually Sunday.
But - Monday to Thursday - I don't drink much, like 1 drink, about 1 to 2 units. Friday and Sat have a bit more.
Keep thinking I should reduce it further as its habit really.

heartbrokenof · 12/06/2024 20:04

No I barely drink usually but maybe 2 or 3 times a year I get drunk, not sure which is healthier!

DogwoodTree · 12/06/2024 20:05

I haven’t drunk for six weeks and I LOVE it. I’m like some PPs in that I’d always end up sliding back to drinking every evening, just because I “could”. I think also without realising it had formed a cycle where I would crave a drink once it got to the evening - probably more behavioural/psychological than physical addiction. It was like a subconsciously expected to have a wine so then I found myself really wanting one.

anyway, I stopped and made a huge point of reflecting on the benefits: how physically good I felt, more energy, lovely pride feeling when I woke up knowing I hadn’t drunk the night before. My face looks younger and my body looks better as there’s no puffiness or bloating or extra pads of squish.

what has truly delighted me is how much I have enjoyed socialising without a drink, which I have never done before except when pregnant. I have more energy for conversations, no inner commentary wondering if I’m pissed and saying the wrong things, just actual proper human connection! AND even if I stay up really late, the next morning is fine. Also, whilst I didn’t feel I struggled with my mental health before, my general mood is so much better and more resilient, happier, I feel moments of genuine joy and happiness and contentment for small reasons during the normal everyday- which I rarely did before.

I have a sweet tooth and love chocolate/cake/biscuits and I found when I was drinking I was constantly battling those urges - first because alcohol gives me sugar cravings the next day but also because I felt I needed to diet all the time due to the wine bloat and empty calories in the booze. I made a point of freeing myself from that and enjoying chocolate or cake and telling myself “it’s so great I can have this because I’m not drinking”.

anyway so I’m only six weeks in but currently LOVING LIFE which is unusual for me.

Question10 · 12/06/2024 20:05

I used to drink at least 4 times per week … mainly wine after work with dinner. Two years ago, I thought I wanted to challenge myself with having no alcohol for 1 year. I haven’t looked back!!! I’ve done all the things I usually associated with alcohol… weddings, festivals, holidays and they have all been great!
I feel so much more healthier, brighter, more alive!

ThatJollyLeader · 12/06/2024 20:06

I used to drink most days but I stopped completely two years ago.

Life without alcohol is great.

tartancladpjs · 12/06/2024 20:06

I'll drink about 3 nights a week.

babsnet · 12/06/2024 20:07

I was the same as you, then I stopped drinking alcohol altogether in March, and am so happy I did. It’s so liberating not constantly having to police myself to have alcohol free days. No more hangovers and can drive whenever I like/need! I don’t miss it at all, highly recommend it!

Maddy70 · 12/06/2024 20:08

Yes i dis until 6 months ago noŵ I don't drink at all. I'm not missing it either. I'm still going out as much but drink alcohol free drinks

JennyWren87 · 12/06/2024 20:08

I'd loooovee to have an ice cold beer every evening. But I don't because I think too much about what that means/could mean. And my partner's mum was an alcoholic. But I do drink 4/7 days. Always a pint or two glasses of wine.

Question10 · 12/06/2024 20:08

If anyone is seriously considering stopping drinking alcohol, I suggest you listen to the huberman podcast about alcohol… once I heard the science behind it, I can’t “unhear” that … puts me off for life!

BatshitCrazyWoman · 12/06/2024 19:50

Never more than one glass of wine a week, but only if I'm out for dinner. If I don't go out I don't have any. I never drink at home.

I'm the complete opposite, I'd rather have a good quality glass of wine with dinner at home than drink a massively overpriced and often not very good wine with a meal in a restaurant. I'm always the designated driver for work events.

To answer the OP, I drink at the weekend but not during the week. If I'm on holiday I'll drink during the week but I can't sustain it for very long, I need days without wine. I'm pretty lightweight though, DH and I struggle to finish two bottles of wine between us over a weekend. On holiday we'd drink 3-4 bottles in a week.

TealDog · 12/06/2024 20:09

I hardly ever drink, even on weekends. In the summer I might drink more if we go to beer gardens or have a BBQ but even then I’d say at the most 2-3 times a week.

Changingplace · 12/06/2024 20:12

I used to, but I realised I was drinking too much and I couldn’t stop at one glass so I changed my habits. I still drink but only at weekends or if I’m on holiday, I occasionally drink at home but typically more often if I go out rather than drinking at home.

junerella · 12/06/2024 20:13

I've never really thought about this being bad, I think I have a small glass of white wine with dinner most days. I don't binge drink ever and if I ever go out I actually wouldn't drink anything as I'm really picky and would rather just have soda.

Vettrianofan · 12/06/2024 20:14

I just drink herbal teas. Up early every day.

Kittynoodle · 12/06/2024 20:15

MrsDoylesLastTeabag · 12/06/2024 19:53

Fine dining and wine are as close as I get to a hobby. I’m sure I’ll die younger than I otherwise would, but I have no children, no pension, and generations of early dementia in my maternal line, so that’s actually fine by me.

If you want to live old and healthy, you should probably cut down.

I’m the same, in my 60s, widowed, no pension, dementia very prevalent in the family.

no desire at all to live to an old age

AuntieStella · 12/06/2024 20:16

No, I drink at the weekend, and sometimes an evening in the week (if the sports club heads to the pub after). Plus special occasions, and more when I'm on holiday.

I think I'm doing OK - I never feel as if I have to have a drink, and can go without indefinitely without even the slightest difficulty if that's what circumstances dictate - for example I cut it out completely if my weight is creeping up

WhyamInotvomiting · 12/06/2024 20:17

No. I've never been a big drinker really. In a very sociable busy month I may drink twice at social events. But that is rare too, it's often less often than that. I like a drink (or 5!) now and again but Ive never felt any particular need or pull to alcohol and DH is exactly the same. Since we had our bairns we drink even less than we used to. I'm pregnant now and I just went to a wedding and would have liked to have had a couple there ideally but it's not a big deal like.

MotherOfRatios · 12/06/2024 20:18

Hardly never but I'm that generation that does drink less.

truthfully I think it's bad how British culture revolves around alcohol

Cattyisbatty · 12/06/2024 20:19

I don’t drink at the moment due to a health issue, I don’t miss it as much as I thought I would. Mainly in social situations, not at home.
I had cut down a lot before I stopped as wine was not agreeing with me anymore in perimeno. I did like the odd cocktail or g&t though.
I will prob drink again one day but very occasionally- Xmas, birthdays etc.

SnackFish · 12/06/2024 20:20
