Bathing during a period

Johannapiana · 11/06/2024 22:51

Recently heard a rumour online that it's no problem to have a bath on your period as the water stops blood flow (no tampon required).

Never worked for me. AIBU this must be an old wives tale?

YABU - Yes this can and does happen.
YANBU - Sounds bonkers.

Am I reading this correctly? Does eveyone take their tampon out when in the bath? If yes, why??

Yes I do, to give my body a break while I can. Each to their own.

Works for me.

The water pressure would usually stop anything coming out, which is why I don’t get the recent comments on a thread about swimming pools being disgusting places because you’re in the water swimming amongst other women’s vaginal discharge. The extreme pressure from a large body of water like a pool stops this from happening, plus the gusset in your swimwear.

water can stop some women’s periods, it does not work for all ( even then some may still be coming out).
water has never worked for me.

MigGirl · 13/06/2024 08:12

I tend to find it mostly stops them, but I still prefer to have a shower as I get some leaking not loads. I do have horrible heaving periods though.

For sweet relief and a break. My clots often hurt until they're out. I'm a fidget arse so although I double up with pads if I'm very heavy, I don't find them practical on their own, so heavy days can be very uncomfortable until I can remove a tampon. Baths seem to get everything moving and the heat helps the pain so it's bliss to de-tampon. What do you think people who don't use tampons at all do? I don't wear them in the shower either unless it's at the gym. Hot water on my lower back is bliss. DH sometimes comes in the shower with me and will pound the base of my spine at the same time to help the cramps.

Also I don't mind taking a tampon out after swimming but I don't really like how they feel after being in water so again- I avoid them in the bath at home. I clean the bath up afterwards.

Catsmere · 13/06/2024 08:14

I'm just baffled at the idea of bath water being deep enough to make any noticeable pressure. I never had very deep baths - no point, they got cold too quickly.

stopthepigeonstopthepigeon · 13/06/2024 08:16

Nope. Doesn’t work for me.

CassandraWebb · 13/06/2024 08:20

Yes this happens for me (and I have horribly heavy periods)

I've never used tampons. I can't get on with them. I used pads and now I use period pants

bryceQ · 13/06/2024 08:24

Mine stops in bath

Well not all of us use tampons so there are definitely going to be people who bathe without one? What is not to understand about this?

such a natural function does not require a graphic outline on a public forum
do people have no dignity?

Clots are natural. You’re on a thread about periods. I think your attitude is more disgusting than a natural bodily function.

Water doesn't stop periods. For anyone, ever.

DracoDormiensNumquamTittilandum · 13/06/2024 08:51

FFS! Please people, bath water doesn't stop blood from leaving your uterus. Think about it, how could it?! When you're sitting down, the blood pools in your vaginal canal until you stand up, when it falls out.

BertieBotts · 13/06/2024 08:55

Obviously not "everyone" does take a tampon out to bath, but also, some of us don't use tampons in the first place.

Ok, thank you for your kind words

maddiemookins16mum · 13/06/2024 09:31

I had many a bath when on my period, no major eeew moments.

theaL · 13/06/2024 09:33

If the blood does come out a little bit, what's the harm with that? It's not like poo or wee, it's not full of germs, surely it's like you're own spit, or a bit of blood from your finger? Or maybe I'm not fussy enough?

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 13/06/2024 09:46

We had no shower when I was growing up, so it was a bath or nothing. My DM never said anything about not doing it, in fact I’m sure she said it would be fine.

By contrast, when I was 16, the mother of my German exchange girl was adamant that you could not bath or wash your hair when you had your period. The younger sister virtually had a tantrum at the dinner table because she wasn’t allowed to wash her hair. ‘Immer ein Theater!’ (Always a drama!) said Mutti, with a ‘What can you do?’ shrug.

This was in the 1960s, and even then I was amazed at such old-fashioned attitudes! Or perhaps Old Wives’ Tales would be more apt.

I just don’t think body shaming is acceptable to be honest, it’s easy when you’re anonymous isn’t it?

alittlehopeisadangerousthing · 13/06/2024 09:49

Mine always stops in the bath. Starts again soon after emerging though so I have to sort myself out quickly.

@Theydogethystericalovertheslightestthing Think you need to start hiding threads you're too delicate for then. Thank god we live in times we can discuss every gritty thing about life on an anonymous forum.

Thanks. I feel shamed by her attitude. I didn’t realise we accepted this type of behaviour and discrimination
