Bathing during a period

Johannapiana · 11/06/2024 22:51

Recently heard a rumour online that it's no problem to have a bath on your period as the water stops blood flow (no tampon required).

Never worked for me. AIBU this must be an old wives tale?

YABU - Yes this can and does happen.
YANBU - Sounds bonkers.

it’s not something I’ve spoken about to anyone incase I just have a wide set vagina and a heavy flow 🫣 😂

That's another thing I've noticed in films etc, equating having a heavy flow with a more 'wide set' vagina. Same will tampons i.e. higher absorption needed = bigger vagina, which is just ignorant and bloody insulting. I use 3 different levels of protection in one week...would like to see them explain that!

I completely get you! I was just quoting ‘Mean Girls’ I know it’s nothing to do with my anatomy, I was just making light of the situation that I’ve never met anyone with the same “suction” aspect that I have! 🙈
I can bleed through a super tampon and a night time pad within an hour so the notion isn’t lost on me!

Have we time travelled back to the 1970s? It's an odd discussion to have.

Why does it matter? It's a discussion forum, we can discuss what the hell we want.

Johannapiana · 13/06/2024 00:35

That's ok, I wasn't coming at you @Kpnutz91 the Mean Girls phrase just grinds my gears - as a pp pointed out, it's not a freaking tunnel!

Maybe some of us remember the 70s @JamieFraserSporran.

Would be interested to know why this works for some and not others. According to the Flo app, hot water can actually cause an increase in menstrual flow.

I don't understand what the question is. Bits of period end up in the bath water. That's normal isn't it? mind boggles

AlmostAJillSandwich · 13/06/2024 01:37

I can't stand baths, and we don't have running hot water anyway so i never got to test this theory. Hated period showers though, not having them with my implant has been life changing.

Ponderingwindow · 13/06/2024 04:46

I bleed in the bath

sometimes even with a fresh tampon right before I get in, I bleed in the bath. Heavy periods and flooding are very annoying.

not going to stop taking baths during my period. They help with the cramps immensely .

Works for me.

The water pressure would usually stop anything coming out, which is why I don’t get the recent comments on a thread about swimming pools being disgusting places because you’re in the water swimming amongst other women’s vaginal discharge. The extreme pressure from a large body of water like a pool stops this from happening, plus the gusset in your swimwear.

there isn't "extreme pressure" and there is nothing to stop blood coming out.

sixtyandsomething · 13/06/2024 04:57

this is total nonsense - why on earth would being in water stop the flow - of course it doesn't. Some women just have very light periods, that is all

itsgettingweird · 13/06/2024 04:58

I wouldn't bleed whilst laying in the actual bath.

The clots lost whilst climbing in and standing up after are a whole different discussion!

Since my hysterectomy having a bath has been one of the things I've really felt it made a difference for.

You obviously haven't bothered to read other's posts before declaring nonsense. Or are we all lying for the sake of it?

MrsToothyBitch · 13/06/2024 07:08

The heavy part of my period is very heavy and clotty. A nice hot bath does wonders for the pain and coaxes some clots out. I usually have a shower afterwards and wash my legs before I insert a tampon.
The bathwater probably does get a bit gross.

DracoDormiensNumquamTittilandum · 13/06/2024 07:11

Of course blood flow doesn't stop in water, how could it? For me my flow is fairly light so it's not like it's pouring out of me at any point so I can have a bath without any leaking unless I actively pressure my pelvic floor. I am surprised that adult women actually believe that the vulva sitting in water can prevent the action of gravity on the blood that is in the uterus!

MadameMassiveSalad · 13/06/2024 07:12

It's fine!

DracoDormiensNumquamTittilandum · 13/06/2024 07:15

Springchickenonion · 12/06/2024 02:57

I have extremely heavy periods but works fir me.... well... until I stand up and get out of the bath

Maybe a pelvic floor thing? Try doing some pelvic floor exercises.... you should be doing this anyway!

It's because the blood is pooling in your vaginal canal or somewhere and when you stand up gravity causes it to pour out. Nothing is holding the blood inside you apart from gravity.

TheChosenTwo · 13/06/2024 07:16

I’ve got PCOS so on the rare occasion I have my period I need to wear a tampon in the bath to avoid lying in my own ‘chunks’ 🫣 sorry!

Halfheadhighlights · 13/06/2024 07:19

i have quite a heavy flow at the beginning of my period and it doesn’t flow into the bath. A couple of clots sometimes come out but I just push them towards the plug hole and let them out

Theydogethystericalovertheslightestthing · 13/06/2024 07:20

Am I reading this correctly? Does eveyone take their tampon out when in the bath? If yes, why??

duchessofsilk · 13/06/2024 07:21

I dont like baths anyway but the few times I have had a bath it has not stopped me bleeding and I dont find it particularly nice bathing in blood water so showers feel much nicer.

When I used to use them I found water would go up my vagina and soak the tampon so it would have to come out anyway.

Equally confused! I would wear a tampon in the bath, just like I would if I went swimming on my period.

Poyulyi · 13/06/2024 07:27

I have very heavy periods and sometimes a bath ends up like a murder scene but I need it for my cramps. I just have a shower at the end of it, so problem solved!

I'm begining to think I have woken up in a parallel world...

Nothinglefttosaynow · 13/06/2024 07:40

Depends, if I'm in to help with cramps & leave everything alone down there then sometimes there's nothing/minimal. If I'm giving everything a good scrub then there can be loads. I always assumed it was similar to my period never really starting properly until I stand up in the morning & the angle changes letting everything flow.
