Bathing during a period

Johannapiana · 11/06/2024 22:51

Recently heard a rumour online that it's no problem to have a bath on your period as the water stops blood flow (no tampon required).

Never worked for me. AIBU this must be an old wives tale?

YABU - Yes this can and does happen.
YANBU - Sounds bonkers.

I suffer horrendous periods and hot baths help me no end, BUT.. I have one of those vaginas that suck up water and because of that it’s always a blood bath! I just shower straight after.. Even when not on my period, after a bath, 10 mins after I’ll flood a load of water out, not sure why it happens but it does 😅

PickAChew · 11/06/2024 23:24

Just have a nice soak then a rinse with the shower before you get out.

BeardieWeirdie · 11/06/2024 23:26

I bleed in the bath, especially on exit. I’d normally put a mooncup I when I stand up in the bath, so any gushing can be rinsed away when I drain it.

It's a myth that water pressure prevents menstrual flow, but it does slow it down. I just use a cup in the bath.

As in Moon Cup, or a mug held against the nether regions? 🤔

I have a tampax on the edge of the bath and put it in as I stand up to get out, to avoid the crime scene look. Clean up any run off with the (dark blue) flannel that then goes in the wash

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 11/06/2024 23:29

I can lie in the bath for ever and don't get blood in the water. It must be the water pressure that stops it for me, not lying flat, because lying down in bed doesn't stop the flow. I can't think of another explanation.

I was just reading this thread thinking I must be really odd but nope, I found my fellow suction buddy! 🤣

I'm the variety that is fine for most of the bath but when I grab the side to stand up everything, water, blood water just floods out, so I have a choice bath or floor! Clearly I choose bath but then I have to do a weird tiptoe to the shower.

Even an hour + after the bath it's still little water gushes.

Disturbia81 · 11/06/2024 23:19

Same! 😂 never bothered me.

Yeah, didn't bother me much, I never expected it to stop. The clots were annoying, but better there than soaking into a pad!

Johannapiana · 11/06/2024 23:32

Yes, as you say lying flat can't be it either @GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut

Mine stops when I’m in the bath and I usually have a really heavy flow. When I stand up to get out though it does restart and it’s like a murder scene with blood everywhere

That’s the same for me and why I wouldn’t have a bath. I can remember when I was young and my mum saying don’t worry you can have a bath and go swimming. We were in a hotel and I ran to get in! And ran to get changed after. It was ok but I wasn’t doing it again. (Was so much better when I discovered tampons for pools!)

I have a stash of dark coloured flannels for that purpose! Saves getting towels full of blood

Yay! Glad it’s not just me!

it’s not something I’ve spoken about to anyone incase I just have a wide set vagina and a heavy flow 🫣 😂

But I also don’t hate the little gushes as I then feel completely clean 🙃
I may be getting a little too personal now on this forum..

Johannapiana · 11/06/2024 23:48

That's another thing I've noticed in films etc, equating having a heavy flow with a more 'wide set' vagina. Same will tampons i.e. higher absorption needed = bigger vagina, which is just ignorant and bloody insulting. I use 3 different levels of protection in one week...would like to see them explain that!

I am really heavy at times never bled in the bath. Do use toilet before and straight after getting out,

PurplePolkaDot0 · 12/06/2024 00:05

I have endo and would still get clots (sorry, grim) in the bath 😩

Halfemptyhalfling · 12/06/2024 00:09

Doesn't matter if it stops or not. I still feel cleaner afterwards. Wouldn't feel cleaner from a shower

I'd never heard the term "wide set vagina" before - that sounds like a reiteration of the nasty old assumption that the vagina is an open tube, rather than muscles that are firmly closed.

Excited101 · 12/06/2024 00:27

Of course the blood still comes out! What a load of nonsense. Just because you don’t see it, doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen. I’ve never had a very heavy flow but I’ve occasionally seen little whisps of blood in the water.

Happinessischeeseontoast · 12/06/2024 00:37

Happens to me OP - I also suck water in. I actually encourage it on my period though. If I could give my uterus a blast of water to get my period over with quicker I would.

Ginkypig · 12/06/2024 01:39

Iv not had a bath in my house for years but now I’m thinking of it no I don’t think I did bleed in the bath but did as I’m getting up to get out so it probably is to do with the pressure. Getting up changed the pressure and what would have come out did as she as pressure changed maybe?

not always but also another sucker here

HoHoHoliday · 12/06/2024 02:15

elm26 · 11/06/2024 23:11

I've got endometriosis and ridiculously heavy periods and I've never bled in the bath.

I also have endometriosis with heavy flow and would always bleed in the bath if I'm not wearing a tampon or cup. I don't think there is scientific fact here, it just happens to some people and not others.

Shan5474 · 12/06/2024 02:19

I’ve heard this before and found it to not be true for myself. Never had a very heavy period but on the occasions I’ve done it I’ve had blood in the water - “wisps” as another poster said as it has a different texture to blood and can be sort of stringy. Also found it to get messy on my thighs quickly when I get out unlike a shower where I have time to dry off and sort out a pad

AbraAbraCadabra · 12/06/2024 02:35

I don't care. I just have a bath without a tampon. Occasionally there is blood in the bath.

Garlicker · 12/06/2024 02:45

I bled in the bath, too. Also had bloodstained towels (I used a lot of Vanish Oxi-Action!) Never thought to question this until I read that thing about water pressure stopping it. Interesting how vaginal hydrodynamics seem to vary - that could be someone's PhD topic 😁

Springchickenonion · 12/06/2024 02:57

I have extremely heavy periods but works fir me.... well... until I stand up and get out of the bath

Maybe a pelvic floor thing? Try doing some pelvic floor exercises.... you should be doing this anyway!
