Inspired by another thread raising the topic of UPFs (by a fit 70 year old).

And I’m definitely people judging and shaming.

Lot of us eat shit food (availability of shit food definitely an issue) and seem to be proud of it.

Common MN army, lay into me.

I’ve done both, got used to eating crap as well as got more disciplined and got the crap out of my system (more than once and the change in diet was never a pleasurable experience).

But looking at the streets people just look so, yes fat, and unhealthy. And I’m calling already a size 12 fat here just to be clear (with some leeway for different bone structures)

When will we start admitting we are fat and it is a problem.

According to Vinted it is "large" and a size 14 is "XL"

similar with Zara. My DD is size 10 (top)/Size 12 (bottom) and she has to buy a large in Zara. she is not 'large', and nor is she 'fat'!!

Because clothes are manufactured in China and their neighbours. People are just smaller there. Therefore clothes look child sized in comparison. If you try shopping on Wish or Temu, you have to aim for XXXL size to get UK "medium"

Whenyoupickapawpaw · 12/06/2024 10:13

People would rather spend 4 hours scrolling their phone than plan/cook a fresh meal or go for a walk.

The amount of people who are too busy (to cook, play with kids, see friends etc), then the screen time recorded on their phone each day is 4hrs+

I agree there are valid reasons such as availability, disability and cost but there's also "excuses".

I’ve been a size 12 since I was 14 and I am very petite and a normal bmi. And im
almost 40. Seriously, cop on . Also I must add that I think bigger women (size 18+) age better than skinny rakes. Get off your high horse.

Why is saying that any better than the OP calling size 12 women fat? You can defend heavier women without resorting to attacking lighter ones surely? Besides which, I thought this was about 'concerns' for the health of the nation not how ornamental different sized older women are. There's far more important criteria for deciding what aging 'better' is than how aesthetically pleasing you might think an older woman is based on her weight.

Prior to phones, the same people would just watch tv or read newspapers instead of going for walks or playing with their kids.

I am a size 12. I am the healthiest I've ever been.

I was half dead at a size 6, and I'm lucky to be alive.

Thanks though, I worked hard to be where I am now, and I don't care if you think I'm fat. Trust me it's better than the alternative and I'm happy.

I think you might need to speak to a therapist, they can really help you dig into went you place so much worth of body size of yourself and others.

Because I’m not a public figure with any level of authority where tens, hundreds of thousands, millions of people would see a headline claim that would then be hijacked by newspapers and taken out of context. I’ve elaborated further in my posts for every single of the thousands of women to see what point I’m making.

In what possible context would saying a size 12 is fat be correct. Thankfully around 50% of the population wouldn’t know what you’re talking about anyway!

Isn’t it the case that people in the overweight (not obese) category have the longest life expectancies?

I think there's a body type which stores fat less dangerously - the so-called 'pears', with fat bottoms and thighs, as opposed to those who store it around their middles where it is usually visceral fat.

This could be out of date - does anyone know?

Valeriekat · 12/06/2024 18:52

Anxiousheartbeat · 11/06/2024 09:40

How is OP intolerant? It’s not intolerant to point out lots of people are overweight.

Size 12 isn't remotely overweight for most people though.

I've heard this too, being a pear shaped person who carries all my weight on my lower half I do have a vested interest in it.

Menora · 12/06/2024 19:58

Yes your waist should be less than half your height for health. So if you have smaller legs but a large abdomen it puts you at more risk. Big legs is not the dangerous adipose fat like the organ abdo fat is. However it can limit your mobility

The outcome of weight is relevant in older adults from things like falls and accidents. TLDR version is: If you have a fall and you become frail, you will become frail more slowly if you are overweight than if you were already a low weight. Being overweight doesn’t stop you getting unwell, because adipose fat increases your risk of health conditions anyway, but you basically may live slightly longer than a low body weight person who had the same condition. When I say slightly they mean your body can manage on its fat stores for slightly longer than someone with a low body weight, so for instance when old people lose their appetite, an already small person is going to get thin and frail very fast, and this can mean they lose muscle mass too and can fall over and hurt themselves more easily.

However the lower body weight person already has a higher life expectancy rate and lower risk of cardiovascular, cancer risks than the larger person in the first place. This is called the obesity paradox but it’s been misinterpreted as ‘fat people live longer’ which they statistically do not. It’s not good to be too thin as most people know either.

What is better is to have a moderate BMI and hold onto your muscle mass and mobility to prevent you from being at risk of falls as you age, and increasing your mortality rate by reducing your body fat

If you agree that it is a dangerous statement then why post it on a public forum for 1000s of women to see?

Because the OP is desperate for attention. She says herself that she wrote the first post to grab attention and has been wittering on since, forgetting what she wrote.

I've realised that you can delete threads for yourself. Excellent tool and this one's going.

I’m really dragging it out now. How would you summarise in one sentence what is the thread highlighting?

to sum up, "overweight people are in denial and proud of it, and anyone who disagree is a fat-shamer or troll"

so nothing new really

Where do you get this information from?

You could easily be a 12 at 5'3" and 10st and you'd be overweight.

Chypre · 10/06/2024 14:24

"Street" people are looking fat and unhealthy not because they see it as a positive trait. They have no choice. Given the choice (=money), majority would not live off chicken nuggets and fish fingers or whatever could be bought in bulk on a discounted price, and put into freezer. Buying whole foods sadly is a privilege, cooking from scratch sadly is a privilege.

Edited

I agree with you on some points, as eating healthy can be quite expensive since, but equally it can be cheaper than a takeaway if not going for the most expensive healthy ingredients, for example having whole foods like lentils, potatoes, courgettes, bananas instead of berries, salmon, avocados etc. cooking from scratch should not be considered a privilege but a life skill. The handful of times I have ordered a takeaway it always takes 45min or more, I can cook a healthy meal in less than 30 min at a fraction of the cost.

WeirderandWeirder · 16/06/2024 16:39

Sadly, on MN, it isn't possible to have a reasoned discussion about any aspect of culture without a slanging match ensuing. There's no reasoned debate, only knee jerk, tabloid-esque bun fighting.

There are some interesting articles on Wiki regarding the Western Pattern Diet, with a non biased, measured approach to how culture is changing.

We don't have to blame or shame an individual to take notice of a larger, countrywide pattern. Women in many English speaking countries (and beyond) are surpassing their male counterparts in terms of weight gain. It is interesting to look at global patterns since they do appear to be quite eye opening - both the USA and Alaska measure a 45% or thereabouts obesity rate, yet Canada, spaced straight in the middle of the two, clocks in much lower over all.

I am interested in the 'why's', because human behaviour fascinates me. I can do this as well as support wonderful, strong, 'fat' activists, especially where the feminist and body size conversations converge.

I would ask, why, on the whole, are countries such as Italy, Japan and Scandinavia at the lower end of the BMI scale (even if I acknowledge BMI to be a problematic measure).

Most conversations of any intellectual acuity on MN are immediately shunned, deleted or dumbed down into culture wars. It's like the fucking Daily Mail with a side of virtue signalling thrown in for the mix.

MN in general has far more threads devoted to being overweight, styling plus size bodies and diet than any other category bar AIBU. Therefore, this topic won't gain traction without descending into personal insults and shame accusations. Since so many MNers insist that the problem with obesity involves being WC poor or using cheap foods, it would seem that the insecure self proclaimed MC are actually in the same boat.
Odd that, isn't it?
