How much do you pay for wraparound care? I’m panicking

Lone parent, no help, going to have to pay for wraparound care from as early as possible and late as possible. Does anyone know what this costs roughly? I have enquired at a couple of schools but they refused to discuss costs unless I was considering the school and had applied or looked round etc and I didn’t want to lie! Dc is only 3 but I am so worried about what’s to come

Varies massively even school to school in same place. If you go to the open days they should tell you. I found not all schools even have wraparound, we had to choose one further away than our closest couple of schools because of this.

You could try posting in local Facebook groups to find out about this or at least findout about open days?

At DDs school we pay £7.50 a day (morning breakfast club and after school).
Timings can differ too, one school does till 5pm another close by til 6. Does this matter?

Sirzy · 09/06/2024 18:49

If you can afford it I would look at a childminder for one end of the day or another, breakfast club and after school club makes it a very long day for the little ones and a CM gives more chances for chilling!

Gymmum82 · 09/06/2024 18:51

North west
£8 breakfast
£15 after school

absolute rip off but it’s our only option

SilentSilhouette · 09/06/2024 18:51

Oxfordshire.
£5 for 7.30am including breakfast.
£6 for after school club until 4.30pm or £12 until 5.30pm.

If the school runs it themselves it's much cheaper than those who use external companies.

Ask on a local Facebook group about prices.

Don't forget to ask about availability too! Some schools have limited places!!!

Winter41 · 09/06/2024 18:51

I think ours was £3.50 for breakfast club which started at 7.30 and £7 for after school until 5.45.

Onlinemum22 · 09/06/2024 18:52

Ours is £7 from 7.15am and £20 after school until 6.15pm
£27 a day

berksandbeyond · 09/06/2024 18:53

Breakfast - £6
After school - £12.50
Berkshire

OrangeSlices998 · 09/06/2024 18:55

In that scenario I’d be wondering if a before & after school nanny would be more beneficial, may be able to help with light household duties too and DS can go to activities/clubs after school if you wish, or go to the park or whatever, or have the freedom to be home rather than in childcare. I don’t think it’s as expensive as people might think! Local ones to me (west coast of Scotland) can be £11 an hour.

Id recommend posting on a local Facebook page for costs and people’s recommendations!

FlyingSoap · 09/06/2024 18:19

And people say, ‘your prices go down when they start school’

Some of these would be £400 a month! How do people do it? Especially if you’ve then got a younger one in full time nursery

Well nursery is a lot more than £400 a month for most people! Even with funded hours, we never paid less than £700 a month for nursery!

DappledThings · 09/06/2024 18:56

£3.50 for BC, £9.50 for ASC but only 80% of both once you go through the government childcare account

User364837 · 09/06/2024 18:56

Southeast
£5 breakfast club (7.45am includes bfast)
£12.50 after school club (6pm, includes light tea)

User364837 · 09/06/2024 18:56

Oh yes and 80% of that with tax free childcare and can book adhoc which is great

PurpleFlower1983 · 09/06/2024 18:57

£20 per day with a private provider at my DD’s school. £7.50 per day but only until 5.10pm at the school I work at. Breakfast club from 7.45am. We run that at a loss.

PurpleFlower1983 · 09/06/2024 18:58

That’s in Yorkshire.

Herecomesthebusybride · 09/06/2024 18:59

Surrey, Breakfast club £6.50 and After school club £12.50.. it really is a lot of Money especially if you have more than one DC Confused

EllieQ · 09/06/2024 19:28

I’m in North Yorkshire. Breakfast club is from 7.30 and costs £7, after school club runs 3-6 and costs £11.50. It’s run by the private nursery next to the school, and they also run a holiday club, which is 8-6 and costs £35 including lunch and snacks.

When we were choosing schools, one of my main criteria was the availability of wrap around care. Luckily both schools nearest to us had decent wrap around care, but I know not all schools do. And it was hard to find that information on the school websites.

As others have said, you can use the tax-free childcare to pay for it. Having had advice not to leave booking to the last minute as there are limited places, I booked the after school places not long after the school places were confirmed for reception!

CatStoleMyChocolate · 09/06/2024 19:29

We found, pre-Covid, that after we benefited from the 30 funded hours (which we used towards 5 days’ school nursery AM sessions and 3 full days of childminder), our childcare bill didn’t drop any further on starting school.

If we had both kids in full wraparound from September, 5 days a week, it would cost £900 a month after tax free childcare. That, to me, simply isn’t worth it against what I earn (and I earn a reasonable salary). We will be paying for one day PM wraparound and covering the others through me working part-time and DH being able to flex around school runs. If I went to full time and we needed two extra PM sessions, that plus the train fares would put us in a deficit. So it is literally not worth it for me to work full-time in the short to medium term.

FlyingSoap · 09/06/2024 18:28

Still a lot though isn’t it! I bet lots of parents with little ones don’t know how much wraparound care will cost

They probably ought to check before having kids! It’s not a surprise that you’ll still have to pay for some childcare once they start school.

Cantbefound · 09/06/2024 19:31

This is really interesting to read actually! Yorkshire - breakfast club £4 and ASC to 5.45 £8.50

Seedsout · 09/06/2024 19:32

£6. Breakfast club (no breakfast provided)

£13 afterschool (inc snacks)

£38 a day for my two

modgepodge · 09/06/2024 19:38

Gosh ours is very expensive compared to lots on here. Over £7 for breakfast club and £16.50 for after school (til 6pm). Works be going up to almost £18 in September except the school have announced they’re taking over from the company who currently runs it and the price is actually dropping instead. And they’re offering an earlier finish for less money too. Hoping any profit goes to benefiting the school rather than profit for a company this way too.

We have had issues with availability too, no ridiculous long waiting list for a place BUT you’re not guaranteed a place just cos you have had one before. So some long term attendees couldn’t get a place this year as others signed up more quickly. Has mostly been resolved now though.

Nursemumma92 · 09/06/2024 19:39

South west-
'Early Birds' (like breakfast club but no breakfast included) starts 7.45am £2

ASC until 5.30 £8, does include snacks

HAF1119 · 09/06/2024 19:39

Breakfast club for us from 7.45 £5.50, after school club £6 an hour

CoffeeCup14 · 09/06/2024 19:53

It seems to vary even locally. If you get Universal Credit you can claim something like 85% of your childcare costs back, which makes a huge difference.

addictedtotheflats · 09/06/2024 20:01

In west yorks, breakfast club is free (subsidised by greggs) after school club £12 til 6pm. Holiday clubs range from £25-£35 a day depending which one we used. I used tax free child care for both
