To ask for help in getting from a virus fast?

I've got a horrible flu like virus and have had for over a week. Started as a bad cold. Then sinusitis, and had antibiotics.

Week on and still feel dreadful. Can't stay awake for more than an hour and even walking downstairs is exhausting. Headache and body aches, taking regular painkillers.

Haven't been able to do anything for a week and just keep on falling asleep.

This week ahead I have lots of really important things on and I just need to get better, and not be constantly asleep.

Any hints and tips, no matter how mad, to get me feeling normal

I always, always give in to a virus. I usually sleep for a few days/week (obvs depends on the virus) and then spring back really quickly. Friends who carry on working or try and plough through seem to suffer for ages longer. In your case, sounds to me like your body is crying out for bed rest. Forget about the things you have to do - spend an hour cancelling everything and then forget about it all and focus on you.

Time and rest is the only thing that works.

Vitamin c & zinc
Water

SmileyHappyPeopleInTheSun · 09/06/2024 15:21

I agree rest is probably best and standard plenty of fluids.

Otherwise - and it's possibly to late Sambucol and/or any vit c, Zinc and Vit D vitamins combination - and a healthy diet.

Hydrate hydrate hydrate and sleep is all I can recommend

Dishwashersaurous · 09/06/2024 18:53

Thanks all. I've basically been asleep for a week and not feeling any better.

The things I have next week are immovable and I absolutely need to do them.

But I can't stay awake for more than about an hour and just feel so unwell

me too, so sympathy

Take. 500 Vit C several times a day and get yourself some Lugol iodine drops, they each are very effective at killing infections, but don’t take them at the same time as they knock each out. Take the drops last thing at night.

Strath. Used to be Bio Strath. Brilliant for getting you back on your feet.

(Don't use the liquid if you're coeliac. Take the tablets.)

Saline rinsing your sinuses three times a day, this is proven to shorten the duration of viral infections (some of them). Hydration, rest, staying off alcohol completely. Gargle with salt water after saline rinse might help if your throat is sore.

hope you feel better soon.

Dishwashersaurous · 10/06/2024 06:57

Thanks all. Had another day of just sleeping again.

Went to bed at 8pm and woke at half six with my alarm.

Just feel awful, ache all over and like I haven't slept for a week

TBH unless the things you have to do are the funerals of close relatives (I v much hope not) I think you should cancel.

Otherwise, some good suggestions here. Hydrate as much as you possibly can. Lots of water and some Lucozade Sport. Black coffee or a Diet Coke just before you have to do something. Berocca. Saline rinse - the neti pot type is better than the spray. Paracetamol and a decongestant. Personally I find large doses of vitamin C really upset my stomach and make me feel worse, but do take a decent amount. Those little hot shot drinks you can get in M&S are pretty good too.

Dishwashersaurous · 13/06/2024 09:42

Just to update. Went back to gp, chest and ear infection, so second lot of antibiotics.

And I have basically slept for 48 hours. Nwo beginning to feel like I might get better

I agree with PP don't try and push through a virus it can just make things worse for months.

My DM pushed through after pneumonia as her DM was very ill and it took her almost a year to recover properly. If she had given herself time to recuperate she would have been better so much more quickly.

Unless next weeks agenda is life or death, cancel...others involved will have to make do without you. People get ill, put yourself first. Oxygen mask and all that
