Women in their 40s loving Taylor Swift

I’m seeing a fair amount of criticism on here and other places about grown women liking TS and just wondered; could we have a list of acceptable hobbies for the 40+ women as I appear to be womaning wrong in the eyes of some mnetters.

TS can't be that far off 40 herself. I don't see the problem. I'm not a big fan of her music, but I don't see any issues with people who are, regardless of their age.

HandsDown84 · 08/06/2024 13:19

She's been going since 2003, when I was (I don't know about you but I'm feeling) 22. What is the age gap between mid-30s Taylor and her fans supposed to be?

GreyCarpet · 08/06/2024 13:20

Tbh, I can't abide TS but my daughter loves her and is going to see her in August.

As for other acceptable interests for women over 40, er, well I'm nearly 50 and play bass guitar in a punk band.

Still dye my hair black (and crimp it too on occasion).

I think women in their 40's are meant to drink gin and go to spa days.

I think so too.

Surely, most of us are just 40+ year old versions of our teenage selves?

Singleandproud · 08/06/2024 13:21

I think the TS thing is really weird, I've been listening to her since 2007, she opened up country music to teens before moving to pop. I always liked the story within country music and related to her far more than Dolly or Carrie Underwood

I think the people who think she's for tween only heard of her when she released Shake it Off but even that is 10 years old, and they definitely haven't seen Vigilante Shit.

TS engineered her career off her own back with substantial support from her parents opposed to the likes of Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Macaulay Culkin, Lindsey Lohan, Demi Lavato etc that were mostly thrust into the limelight via their parents living vicariously through them. TS clearly has a close and respectful relationship with her parents and looks to them for counsel but I don't think anyone's forced her to do anything if they had she could have gotten out of the fame game years ago with her millions.

40+ years hobbies are clearly meant to be gin and a spa, perhaps getting your body prep for menopause at the gym, if you get your own hobby at all after running the kids around to theirs on Saturday and hubby off cycling on Sunday.

HandsDown84 · 08/06/2024 13:23

Funny how nobody has ever told anyone my age they're too old for Beyoncé.

GreyCarpet · 08/06/2024 13:24

SilverCatStripes · 08/06/2024 13:06

My 11 year old introduced me to Taylor Swift and I think she is fab!

There are some posters on here who act terribly cold and efficient about all manner of things - hobbies, careers ,what they wear, even their relationships with the own kids and spouses . I always thought this was a slightly middle class trait to be honest, and it’s just so depressing, what a shit way to live your life.

I think thats what happens when you sacrifice your whole self for your family.

I think those people envy those who didn't do that and make themselves feel better about it by criticising others.

I see so many threads on here asking about "should* or "Am I too old to..." There is no 'should' and there is no 'too old' there's only what works for you.

Misthios · 08/06/2024 13:24

I am in my 50s and I think she's great. Wouldn't pay to see her in concert (too much standing around and lack of loos) but if I was guaranteed a good seat and that I wouldn't get cold/wet I would love to see her show. Quite happy to sing along with DD's taylor playlist in the car.

You might not like her music but come on, she's a talented woman who writes music as well as performing, has had a career spanning many years and is hugely successful at what she does.

EnglishBluebell · 08/06/2024 13:27

Taylor Swift is cheesy pop aimed at preteens & teenagers. Seeing grown women fan-girling or even just listening to Taylor Swift is so painfully cringey and embarrassing - for them. It's on a par with Justin Beiber and Craig David tbh.

Mistymorin · 08/06/2024 13:27

Not TS but DH got us tickets for The Killers a few years ago, best concert ever! We are both in our 60s!

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 08/06/2024 13:27

42 here and all the "can't see the fuss" threads can fuck off. Sick of it! Fine! You don't like Taylor Swift, that's allowed, but stop thinking it makes you superior to other women!

I’m 41 and I fucking love Taylor Swift (along with many other age inappropriate things).

I suggest:
get a new tattoo
take up roller skating
go to a sex party
buy a pair of bright purple DM boots
leave your kids with their grandparents and go to a music festival and take some mushrooms

feel free to add!

You just described my MIL, still does all of that (apart from leaving kids with grandparents, of course), including purple DMs.

Solihullproject · 08/06/2024 13:29

music isn’t ‘just for‘ any particular group…I feel sorry for people with a strong cringe instinct - try enjoying life instead.

Edited

Listen to folklore and then come back and tell me she’s on par with Justin Bieber. I’ve seen both live with my kids and came away from TS a huge fan (wasn’t keen before) and left JB thinking it was the worst concert I’ve ever been to.

You are incredibly wrong.

I don’t think anyone thinks it makes them superior, it’s more about being confused as to why grown adults are dancing to cheesy pop aimed at preteens & teens. Genuinely confuses me. Nothing to do with superiority. That’s quite a childlike take on it…..?

I’m entitled to my opinion! You cannot go round telling people that they’re ‘wrong’ just because they have a different opinion to you 😂

DreadPirateRobots · 08/06/2024 13:33

DH and I (both 40s) have Eras tickets for Wembley and can't wait. We're leaving the DC behind - it's much too good for them.

No, ta! No desire to. My opinion remains.

Are we only permitted to enjoy classical music after a certain age?

mum won a pop quiz at the care home, aged 84 at the time.

is that not okay? or Should she have sat in the care home never listening to any music she likes? She loves George Michael, Abba etc.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 08/06/2024 13:35

@EnglishBluebell

But by saying she's just cheesy pop for tweens you prove you know nothing about her overall output

Music is about how it makes you feel. Her marketing is to a younger market, but who is anyone to say someone of any age shouldn't enjoy music if it makes them feel good?

Misthios · 08/06/2024 13:35

Who says it's aimed at pre-teens though? I don't like this distinction about what sort of music or whatever you should be enjoying at a specific age. It's like the people who "can't understand" why an adult would read a Harry Potter book, buy Lego, or watch a Disney movie, or enjoy an evening playing video games. Or like my mother who thinks 30 is the age limit for having shoulder length hair and that nobody over 40 should be wearing jeans.

Seriously, you're not "confused", @EnglishBluebell . You are sneery and dismissive of people who like different things to you. Not a good look, tbh.

I never said your Mum should or shouldn’t do anything. There is more music out there than classical music and Taylor Swift. You do realise that, don’t you?
