More than private school fees will be affected by VAT

Don't actually know if I'm being unreasonable here, interested to know whether this is true or not. Will the VAT on education also affect holiday clubs and afterschool clubs?

I guess the real reason I started the thread is because I can't understand why more people aren't up in arms about this!

What are you up in arms about though? That you’re unsure if VAT will be applied to holiday clubs or something else?

Itsrainingten · 07/06/2024 14:42

Wait, what? So if my kids are at state school and I stick them in after school club or breakfast club (at the state school) will that go up? I'm very confused 😬

oldwhyno · 07/06/2024 14:42

I don't think they've really said exactly how they will implement this policy have they? Other than to say it won't be by removing charitable status. Happy to be corrected if anyone has a source.

qwertyqwertyqwertyqwerty · 07/06/2024 14:43

The policy proposal is for private schools.

Where is it written that it will be applied to holiday clubs?

I don't want to pay an extra 20% on aftercare or holiday clubs.

It will depend on how the VAT rules are amended. I think it would be unlikely to include holiday clubs etc, unless you are specifically asking about holiday clubs at private schools.

So am I!

My dc isn't at private school so I haven't paid much attention. So is this going to affect wrap around childcare?

That has not been said.

The proposition is being made up questioned completely innocently by the OP.

No.

It is for private school fees.

Solasum · 07/06/2024 14:46

I guess it will all come down to wording. To avoid holiday/after school clubs it might need to be expressly stated that it would be paid-for academic services only. But that would include any kind of tuition?

Lots of dance schools and martial arts schools are technically private schools.

The first person to respond to the OP said "it will include all education"
Now obviously I don't know whether that is correct or BS since I'd never heard it before, hence my confusion!

AngelicInnocent · 07/06/2024 14:47

It depends on the wording they use. Private provision of education could include wrap around care and/or nursery fees outside of the entitlement to free hours.

The problem is that this has not been discussed or covered. The headline is private schools

BaronessEllarawrosaurus · 07/06/2024 14:48

@qwertyqwertyqwertyqwerty that's a relief from the first response I got the impression it would. I read the op and thought no don't be stupid then saw the first response

SaltyGod · 07/06/2024 14:48

It isn’t entirely clear what is included or excluded.

it’s possible that other education fees such as tutors, music lessons, sports clubs, could be included in an attempt to stop schools separating these out for VAT purposes.

Hastily written legislation sometimes has unintended consequences.

Who knows.

Edited

Surely it already does, unless it has charitable status?

Solasum · 07/06/2024 14:49

😱 at the prospect of holiday clubs getting more expensive

If it was all education including regular childcare you would have heard about it!

Do Labour want to reduce access to childcare for working parents? Er, no.

These faux naive questions are about setting hares running IMO.

Somebody else wrote in on another thread. I hadn't thought of it before that! I thought it would just apply to the tuition fee - not the extras, like wraparound care or music lessons.

No, at the moment there is a VAT exemption for education. That will have to be overturned.

It hasn't been hastily written, it hasn't been written yet. It can easily be written to do what is intended.

It will not be universally removed presumably, just an exception written for private schools.

SaltyGod · 07/06/2024 14:52

@qwertyqwertyqwertyqwerty

Of course, it hasn’t been written as Labour aren’t yet in power. My point was that they seem keen to implement quickly and that if it is written in haste there might be unintended consequences.

Detail is rather lacking, we can all agree on that.
