YABU - he's great, I love him
YANBU - only an absolute IDIOT of a PM would have left the D-DAY remembrance early

I'm actually starting to feel (very very slightly) sorry for some of the conservative MPs that will lose their jobs due to Sunak's stupidity.

Sunak is to the Conservative Party what Phillip Green was to BHS.

To be fair, I think the Tory Party have been on a downward spiral since the party (and country) fell out of love with Boris.
The excesses of Boris and the Truss debacle are as much to blame as Sunak.

behindthemall · 07/06/2024 12:06

I mean, conservatives aren’t going to win so no point in trying. Surely, best case for Sunak is he loses his (presumably safe Tory) seat and then he’s free to move to California after the summer.

And if this is his plan, then great politicking. Also great politicking if they want to set up the next election as “wasn’t Sunak awful, new Tory leader is so different so vote for us in 2028”.

So I think he might be a greater politician than he’s getting credit for 😂

Reugny · 07/06/2024 12:06

He's released a clip grovelling on a news channel near you now.

It’s been so badly played you have to wonder if he’s doing everything he can to lose as badly as he can. It’s a gift to every other party. A jewel of an unforced error. And who the fuck is meant to be advising him?!

This is what I think, too. It’s ’my Lovely horse’ 😂

Blackbeardsvest · 07/06/2024 12:08

I thought everything was about the 'optics' these days? No idea what Sunak or his advisors were thinking yesterday, it's almost like they're trying to make themselves (even more) unpopular. I'm so annoyed at the piss poor options voters have to choose from next month, I don't want Sunak or Starmer and I know I'm far from the only one Angry

Led by donkeys did an excellent 'movie' on him. It's on you tube.

MossyBottomFarm · 07/06/2024 12:12

For complete clarity, I don’t like Sunak, and won’t be voting for his party.

But, surely his most ardent fans must think this was a huge miscalculation?

So no umbrella, the Titanic visit, leaving France, going to a brewery when you don't drink, asked the Welsh (at said brewery) about the Euros - the gaffs continue. His advisors must work from Braverman, or Boris or Liz Lettuce.

He could avoided making a tit of himself with most of those things if he'd done his homework and employed a modicum of common sense.

I don't think he could bring himself to do any homework, thinking about, it researching it would feel too much like kowtowing to the peasants.
Because of his arrogance he wont bend to or make accommodations for the common people, he will feel that they ought to bend to him.

The Tories have been on a downward spiral since they fell in love with Boris Johnson.

"Ooh, let's put in the joke candidate, because he's popular with punters who like a laugh."

"Johnson's a lazy dolt I'll find easy to manipulate." (paraphrase of Dominic Cummings in this interview, IIRC)

I'm sure it felt like a clever idea for the first five minutes; then reality hit.

And I suppose Keir is a brilliant one.
I absolutely love what he has done for this country.

Actually yes- at purely being good at politics (not looking at policies etc) Starmer is a good politician.

He has barely made any mistakes over the last few years. He’s understood what turned off voters to the Labour Party and has made significant progress in changing perceptions. The Tories have laid trap after trap for him to fall in, and other, less aware politicians would have fallen in them - but he hasn’t.

He’s worked out when to play party politics and when to just quietly go along with the Tories so any drama is just Sunaks problem.

Starmer has faults, but he’s good at politics in a way Labour hasn’t had for a while. (And Sunak is consistently making it easy for Starmer to look good with minimal effort.)

domineastronomy · 07/06/2024 14:19

Think this might be the end for Sunak.
Who the fuck advises these people?

Yep.

One doesn't have to approve of Starmer, or any of his policies, to see that this is true. Granted, the Tories have given him a loooooot of help at various points. But he has been tactically very astute throughout. Very adept politicianing.

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 07/06/2024 15:40

I do sometimes wonder if Sunak has, throughout his term mistakenly thought that you’re not meant to take the role of PM seriously and it’s all a bit of a laugh.

What????? He wasn't intelligent enough to use an umbrella or the multi-million pound specially build media suite to announce the GE when it was raining.

I’m not sure if the stupidity or the lies are worse.

The Yougov snap poll put Sunak ahead of Starmer after the first tv debate the other day, so plenty of people think he is a good politician.
