Afternoon Tea - how can anyone eat it all?

I've been looking at things to do next weekend. Looked on Wowcher, Groupon etc. A regular offer is Afternoon Tea for two. Whilst it looks lovely, they regularly feature about 6 sandwich corners each, a few savoury items and FOUR cakes each. I love my food, and I like cake, but there's no way I could eat all of that in one sitting. Can anyone eat four cakes in a row? Are we meant to take a doggy bag?

It’s usually 4 sandwiches, 1/2 savoury items, scone and little cakes. It’s essentially a large lunch, no different to three courses. And you are meant to take your time over it. You don’t have lunch as well.

therealcookiemonster · 05/06/2024 16:28

just a pic of a plate of pastries I shared with 1 other as part of my fav afternoon tea - lucknam Park Hotel. strongly recommended...

the savouries, the scones... the pastries... every single one exquisite

Never been a problem for me, sadly 🤭

peachesarenom · 05/06/2024 16:32

I skip lunch and have tea a bit early x

I think people (who are not genetically very tiny) are saying it is quite possible to eat afternoon tea WITHOUT shovelling, guzzling, ramming and don't feel bloated, lazy, unhealthy and sluggish.

I don't think women who do the above are anything to admire, or did you mean you wish you had the capacity to eat a full afternoon tea? I don't understand that though. You can still enjoy afternoon tea food, you'd just be full before those with larger appetites. I don't go around envying my 2 great sons who eat loads more than me.

I'm not serious. Just poking a little fun at the type of language people use on threads about eating, as referenced by the person I quoted.

Yes, I see that now. I took the bait like a greedy fish

drawnfrommemory · 05/06/2024 16:41

The cakes are tiny.

I have no issue eating an entire afternoon tea - the last two times we even had an extra round of sandwiches as well! I do eat very lightly that day though.

greengreyblue · 05/06/2024 16:42

I had one at the weekend. Had it at 2pm so didn’t have lunch. Couldn’t eat all. Brought 3 cakes home. It was a Hilton and sadly very underwhelming. Only one cup of tea!

SOUND THE KLAXON 📣📣📣📣📣📣📣📣📣📣📣📣📣📣🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨

anybody who eats more than 500 calories a day, take cover! The competitive under eaters have emerged!

There are competitive overeaters on this thread too. Why are they never harassed like the 'competitive undereaters' are?

Hiddendoor · 05/06/2024 16:44

If you ask nicely, some places give you seconds. So if you eat all your sandwiches, you can have more. Scones are often merrily replaced. Cakes, have more!

Afternoon tea replaces lunch and your main evening meal (have a light supper later if needs be. Made up of the food you bring home from afternoon tea).

Take a Tupperware if you're worried. But yes, there do exist people - women, even! who can eat some sandwiches and a few small bits of cake without rupturing themselves.

But enjoy your thread full of phrases like "hoover up", "polish off" and "couldn't possibly manage". It's been at least an hour since we had one.

🤣🤣

usernother · 05/06/2024 16:46

Being greedy helps I find. I did bring some afternoon tea home once but this one was full of massive slices of homemade pie, great big slices of cake, sandwiches in thick slices of homemade bread. It was delicious. I'd polish off a normal afternoon tea with no bother, but then I'm not a teeny tiny weeny mumsnetter.

The Ritz won’t give you a doggy bag.😡

Just unhinge your jaw and pour it in

I won’t hear a word said against scones. Scones with cream and jam. Delicious.

I know, it probably wouldn't really be and afternoon tea without the scone, but here in NI we're used to our scones being interesting (raspberry and white chocolate, date and walnut, pear and cinnamon etc) and an afternoon tea never seems to come with anything other than plain or fruit.

Not meant to be an under eating thread. I eat too much and I'm 3 stone overweight. I've never eaten 4 cakes in a row though!

"I've never eaten 4 cakes in a row though!"

Oh, you haven't lived Sweetie!

SilverDoe · 05/06/2024 16:56

I am always so curious about eating habits because I am overweight but could not finish an afternoon tea portion in one sitting at all, especially with a full sized scone. Even if I skip breakfast.

I would happily eat it throughout the day though after I'd taken home a doggy bag! Yet I have a slim friend who could probably demolish the entire thing in one sitting.

I may need to up sticks from NI in that case 🙈 Anything other than a plain scone is blasphemy in my opinion!!

I thought the OP was being tongue in cheek at first.

I’m neither an over nor under eater, but last time I went for afternoon tea I left still very hungry. Portions were TINY!

Maybe it's just round here - too many garden centres and farm shops!!

I draw the line at a mint aero scone though - bleurgh!

Im with you here it's never enough food! And I'm not a greedy bugger normally low end of healthy BMI when I've not just had a baby. Who are all these people finding it too much? It makes no sense to me 😂

EdithArtois · 05/06/2024 17:00

I’m a fat greedy person and I agree with you! Sandwich quiche scones and several cakes each

Well if you eat a full afternoon tea, you still won’t have done. As various people have said, they are two ladylike bites each if you are being polite.

Lavenderandbrown · 05/06/2024 17:09

I am looking forward to a tea at the end of the month. Not only do I eat a great deal of what’s ordered I drink a shed load of tea….the tea is my favorite part and the little bites are so I don’t slosh when I get up from the table. BMI 20. Really op haven’t you been served plenty of meals where you just think TO YOURSELF…I will ask for a box.?What generation is this tiny portioned oh that’s too much MNetter?? I’m not young and I find it ludicrous. My aunt who is 85 used to comment on peoples orders /food intake but she’s been silenced now realizing it’s dull and offensive to always act superior because she’s eating an orange while you have a donut
