Afternoon Tea - how can anyone eat it all?

I've been looking at things to do next weekend. Looked on Wowcher, Groupon etc. A regular offer is Afternoon Tea for two. Whilst it looks lovely, they regularly feature about 6 sandwich corners each, a few savoury items and FOUR cakes each. I love my food, and I like cake, but there's no way I could eat all of that in one sitting. Can anyone eat four cakes in a row? Are we meant to take a doggy bag?

I’ve eaten a hotel afternoon tea and a three course dinner in the past with pre dinner cocktail and wine as well. Yes it’s possible although you may feel a tad sick after. I did

Hahahahaha! Politely nibbling away at a tiny little macaron 😂As though we don't normally scoff a full jam doughnut in our faces when we're in the privacy of our own home / office 😂

@Starlight1979 have you been skulking outside my kitchen window?! OK there's a lot of chat involved whenever I go for tea with friends but the actual food could be polished off in 30 mins rather than the 2 hours allowed!

I take it back. The sandwiches sound quite nice. I won't be eating the falafel though.

I've had a seven course meal with wine pairing. I felt quite drunk and fat but it was delicious and brilliant!

You sound so full of joy.

Poor students.

You do realise that it’s possible to be grateful of people going to the thought and effort of getting you something yet also not be a fan of it?

It’s a lovely gift. Would I be particularly ecstatic about having to go to afternoon tea - no, absolutely not. It’s shit.

CandidHedgehog · 05/06/2024 16:08

While some people on this thread seem to have done OK it’s usually two slices of bread with fillings, one scone and 4 bite sized cakes (equivalent to 1 full size piece). Sometimes a mini (very mini) quiche as well.

You treat it as lunch (late breakfast about 10 or 11ish).

Basically you are asking who can manage one whole sandwich, one whole cake, two whole bites of quiche and a scone as well!

Anyone but Mumsnet competitive under-eaters would call that a normal meal.

Also, the pictures tend to be

  1. Magnified (often an extra small cake stand)
  2. Showing the food for a party of 4.

Obviously if you try and eat 4 meals in one go, you may have difficulty.

Mostlycarbon · 05/06/2024 16:08

People have different metabolisms and different appetites. Mine is different on different days depending on a variety of factors.

Rewis · 05/06/2024 16:09

IME the cakes add up to one proper cake size and the sandwiches together make up one proper sandwich.

Take a Tupperware if you're worried. But yes, there do exist people - women, even! who can eat some sandwiches and a few small bits of cake without rupturing themselves.

But enjoy your thread full of phrases like "hoover up", "polish off" and "couldn't possibly manage". It's been at least an hour since we had one.

Lol. If other people want to gorge themselves by shovelling cakes down their throats and guzzling scones, until they're too bloated to haul themselves up and so have to laze around in a stupor, well, there's certainly no judgement from me. I'm jealous actually, as I'm genetically very tiny and it would make me feel very unhealthy and sluggish to ram that much food in in one meal. I so admire women who don't care about those things! 😂

Anneofa1000days · 05/06/2024 16:15

The afterñoon tea I had at my near by tea room was £25 pp. It consisted of loads of small sarnys, lge slice of quiche each with coleslaw, 4 very lge cup cakes 4 lge slices of cakes, scone cream and jam and 2 small lemon possets. Took most of the cakes home but it was delicious.

That’s why they give you a box. Personally I’ve never been able to finish an Afternoon tea while at the venue but what you receive varies hugely. Some are very generous but others are much less so.

People have varying appetites(Mine certainly certainly isn’t small) but I don’t see why some couldn’t and shouldn’t finish theirs especially if you can take your time.

This is the last Afternoon tea I had.(Not my pic but exactly what we received for 2) and we took about a quarter of it back and ate it later that evening. Others are much less generous with portions.

That seems like a crazy amount of food to eat in one sitting!

I once ate a tray of 12 Krispy Kreme donuts so yeah. I’d manage just fine

That’s very impressive. The mixed box?

as an aside there are dolly Parton Krispy Kreme’s for sale in America - they look yum.

Joob · 05/06/2024 16:19

When I was at uni they used to serve a basic tea every day in the common room- tea was 3p a cup, sandwiches 5p, cakes 7p. You could literally eat for a week on about £2. Ah, happy days.

Re-reading you OP, could you confirm this for me?
Afternoon Tea - how can anyone eat it all then 'there's no way I could eat all of that in one sitting
Do you not have any teenagers, brothers, friends, a DH, partner, dad even who could eat this? Can you not imagine anyone eating it all? Even the Rock or Michael Phelps?
I really think people who start these threads need to think about the motivation. It's pretty weird.

They're very heavily marketed at women though. Clearly not intended for sumo wrestlers lol.

Miyagi99 · 05/06/2024 16:21

They’ve always provided a cake box to take everything left home when I’ve had one.

Loubelle70 · 05/06/2024 16:21

DappledThings · 05/06/2024 12:45

The cakes are tiny. I've never had trouble finishing it. Plus scone.

This...they wont be massive cakes, a little bigger than petit four

I think people (who are not genetically very tiny) are saying it is quite possible to eat afternoon tea WITHOUT shovelling, guzzling, ramming and don't feel bloated, lazy, unhealthy and sluggish.

I don't think women who do the above are anything to admire, or did you mean you wish you had the capacity to eat a full afternoon tea? I don't understand that though. You can still enjoy afternoon tea food, you'd just be full before those with larger appetites. I don't go around envying my 2 great sons who eat loads more than me.

Went to a work event at a football club. Ate 7 scones, as well as sausage rolls and sandwiches. Scones were tiny though.
