I write excellent formal letters/emails that get attention - what job could I do?

I know it's a weird ask, but I'm thinking of all my strengths as I'm desperately trying to pivot.

I write really articulate, attention-grabbing emails/letters. As a result, I've secured significant amount of compensation for people, had institutions change their policies, and secured press coverage for events. I'm articulate, pithy and not afraid of confrontation.

I've mostly written letters/emails on behalf of friends and family. I'm wondering if there is a job that could utilise this quality?

Any thoughts?

Unfortunately, ChatGPT does that too. So maybe someone who reviews those?

Threy · 04/06/2024 20:21

@Olete32 lawyer

Olete32 · 04/06/2024 20:21

That's true. That didn't even occur to me!

Lobbyist? Maybe for a charity

WindowViper · 04/06/2024 20:22

It’s very like what I do. I do government relations (sometimes known as lobbying), so spend my time trying to get the attention of politicians and the like. You need to be very articulate too.

PR uses similar skills.

Arlanymor · 04/06/2024 20:22

Main job or side hustle? Pop yourself on Fiverr and offer your services across the range of written outputs you have outlined.

ErnestCelendine · 04/06/2024 20:22

I do this and work in comms for a charity.

Olete32 · 04/06/2024 20:22

I was in PR for a long time. I am very articulate verbally. I don't think I could be a lobbyist for anything I didn't believe in. I'm at mid-life, needing more meaning, not less.

Bid writer for a charity?

BabyAllergy101 · 04/06/2024 20:23

Writing funding proposals? This is a part of my job and being able to catch the readers attention and summarise the key points directly is really crucial.

goingdownfighting · 04/06/2024 20:24

Anything that involves advocacy I guess. Perhaps volunteer at PALs or the CAB. Hopefully you'll get some training and experience which you can then use to apply for paid roles.

Or you could try local politics? Lot's to speak up for in that arena.

Olete32 · 04/06/2024 20:24

I need a main job.

I've had a successful creative career, with some really big moments, but the money was awful, so I supplemented it with writing for hire/commercial stuff. Now I want to change up the work for hire. I'm bored, and yet need to earn.

OP posts:
LongSinceGotUpAndGone · 04/06/2024 20:24

That skill could be valuable for a PA or executive assistant - much of those roles involves trying to persuade people with very busy schedules to do things they don't consider important, while always remaining super-professional.

Olete32 · 04/06/2024 20:24

Funding proposals might be interesting. Is that actually a job?

I love these suggestions - but I need to earn a living. Unfortunately, so much of advocacy work, or activist work for local gov etc, earns fuck all.

University alumni/fundraising/beneficiaries etc.
Tarted up begging essentially- you have to try and get cash out of wealthy people or companies to benefit the students.

It’s highly tax efficient for them so it’s actually not that difficult.

@Olete32 lawyer

Funnily enough, I looked at doing an MA in law. I've already got an MA, but I could do it in a year full time/two years part-time. I worry it will be a bit treacly and dull to study.

OP posts:
Olete32 · 04/06/2024 20:27

I don't want to try and raise funds via rich benefactors. Not my bag.

Correspondence manager is an actual job. A lot of ministers and CEOs will have someone who manages responses to all the letters they get and organises writing them out..

LeggyLinda · 04/06/2024 20:33

Tender writer?
I don’t know if that’s an actual job (probably is). But the amount of hours wasted when sales people drag everyone out of their primary roles to help win a contract could be a selling point for someone who could collate all that information and just “do it” would be very useful.

ShinyBandana · 04/06/2024 20:34

Policy. Look for policy jobs - I’d start with the civil service

Porridgeislife · 04/06/2024 20:36

RFP writer. It’s essentially answering many written questions for clients considering using the firm for their services. Especially common in financial services.

Htgaul · 04/06/2024 20:36

Civil service, any job but especially correspondence manager (if you just want to write letters all day), but basically any job there uses these skills. Don't frame it as letter writing only, it's persuasion, negotiation etc

ChampagneLassie · 04/06/2024 20:41

I was going to say PR but you already did this. I think you were in wrong sector, financial PR pays very well. Maybe try to get into that, all big finance companies have large teams doing this.,
