Posted this on Addiction Support, but AIBU is obviously much busier. Thanks.

Hi everyone. First time posting on this particular board.
My dad (nearly 70) is chairing a GA meeting very soon, and he'd like an interesting topic - related to gambling obviously! - to raise and discuss with his fellow members.
He has asked for my help as he is hopeless with technology.
I googled and prepared an ideas list for the last time he did this, but the others nicked the ideas for themselves! He's a bit nervous as chairing is out of his comfort zone, but others must feel the same as it's not a popular choice Grin
Please can anyone help. So, for example, last time they discussed 'what advice would you give to your younger self?' I think they may also have covered the impact of gambling on loved ones.
I think he'd prefer that the topics were fairly straightforward, so nothing too complex.
Thank you Smile

How does seeing advertising for online gambling affect you?

Who makes money out of gambling

Have you found your mind calmer now that you aren't having to keep up with your lies and cover your tracks anymore, does that help with resisting getting drawn back in?

Play on the idea that he was nervous, so how does gambling affect mental health, is it an attempt to help stress anxiety but does it cause it? Play to the fact he was nervous, may make him seem more genuine 😁

Thank you to you three!
I have passed on your suggestions, along with some of my own and those from the other board, and will let you know which he chooses!

I'm not a member of GA but I am of AA.
Is this the norm for GA to have a "topic' ?

Generational gambling

Cultural attitudes towards gambling

Gambling in films and tv - how it is portrayed

Does he like maths - what about probability side of gambling? Then he can show the odds of winning are really low and the companies make money outbid the impossible dream of a big win.

Yes, it must be. We're in Scotland, so maybe it works a bit differently up here.

What substitute activities work best? If you are tempted to gamble, what should you do instead? Whether it is playing candy crush or having a coffee or walking around the garden, having a good substitute activity may be useful.

thiughts on ‘gambling’ for children? Seaside 2p pushers, bandit machines with low stakes and blind bags of toys.

Whether they think general election will have an impact on gambling?
what law they would bring in if they were prime minister relating to gambling?

would they accept a treat from someone with the proceeds of a gambling win? e.g their grown up child wins on the national and suggests takeaway for tea as his treat?

JMSA · 02/06/2024 23:35

Thank you SO much to you all. I think we have plenty of suggestions now, but dad and I genuinely appreciate your help.
