What's your cautionary tale?

Having just got through the most stressful week ever due to a nightmare situation of my own making, I thought I would share a previous and current cautionary tale.

  1. Always remember to change the address on your V5 and not just your license. I didn't. DH got caught speeding twice on the same day on the same stretch of road (33 in a 30) in my car. Both fines went to old address. Didn't answer them, obvs. The whole sorry mess played out without me being aware and by the time it all caught up with me it was had been banned from driving for six months and fined £2k - five months earlier! So had been driving while banned for five months!!!

Never ever let your guard down or relax in a work/business situation. Keep your work face on the whole time, it will stand you in good stead.

thecrowshaveeyesbebe · 04/06/2024 04:59

I remember my first boss saying to me ‘Never put in writing anything you wouldn’t be happy to have read back to you in court’ and I’ve stuck with that rule since!

Your lawyer isn't on your side. Your lawyer wants what makes them look best.

Please get a new lawyer.

Never walk up the ladder of a play area tree activity house-adventure playground type thing filming your DC on your phone. This will avoid you banging your head, getting concussion and post concussion syndrome for a year, then a mental breakdown, put on a cocktail of neurotoxic psychotropic drugs... then get a stupid adverse reaction to an off label antipsychotic that causes a permanent neurological involuntary movement disorder that is like Tourette's and Parkinson's disease combined.

Then your life won't be hard forever, and you won't regret being someone who feels freak-like and a failure.

I guess it could be much worse, but my advice is.. don't become obsessed with phones or technology, or trust gaslighting incompetent doctors who have no idea about the potency of the drugs they prescribed, and vehemently deny they might cause permanent harm after just a week.

I'm really sorry to read your post. Excellent advice though, we're all guilty of wandering around the park, taking photos and videos of the kids..aren't we.

I'm sorry your life was changed so drastically, from what you wrote, it sounds unlikely, but I hope you get better soon... maybe the Doctors will be wrong again.

Never attempt to home wax between your bum cheeks unless you really know what you are doing. You may end up sticking them together and not actually removing any hair.

Are you Mr. Tumnus?

Wafflesandcrepes · 04/06/2024 06:24

If a backache comes on suddenly and for none of the usual reasons (fall, lifting something heavy), go straight to A&E and ask to be checked for - vascular/aortic aneurysm or dissection.

Always start a new job with four living grandparents.

If your labour is induced don’t try and be a hero and do without an epidural ( unless maybe you are progressing fast). I tried and 15 hours later begged for one.

Bit of advice, if you're going into be induced and you know you want an epidural, request it before you have the hormone drip.
Fantastic labour, no real pain.

Never buy a leasehold property with a short lease. 🤦🏼‍♀️

Extending a lease is expensive and bloody inconvenient.

Also, with relationships: fools rush in. Take your time, to see if they are your person. Value your worth and don't settle.

Some people do this deliberately, to make money through letting it out. DH did. Bought a flat with a short lease at auction in the 90s and its already paid for itself several times over and will continue to do so until the lease expires.

Obviously not a good idea as a forever home!

Check your credit card statements regularly. My balance was a bit higher than I thought but instead of going back through the statements, I figured I'd just lost track and did a 0% balance transfer for the whole amount.

It wasn't until a hotel charged me for a room I'd cancelled within the free cancellation period, that I happened to trawl back through the transactions and saw a £2,700 charge, 3 months previously, for a trip to Euro Disney.

I have never been to Euro Disney. 🤦‍♀️

It was a fraudulent transaction and Barclaycard were kind enough to credit the amount back to me, despite my lack of observation skills, but I was of course still paying the balance on the new card...can't transfer a positive balance. What an absolute twat.

You can withdraw a positive balance though & then use those funds to pay a lump sum off the new card x

Lovesgotme · 04/06/2024 07:15

Always check your bank account outgoing payments.

I never bothered, and it was only when I went overdrawn that I found out I had been paying someone else's Council Tax for 14 months. Someone I did not know, in a town I had never even visited. £130 a month!

I got it all refunded of course BUT it was excruciatingly embarrassing having to tell various officials that I had not looked at a statement for 14 months.

Don’t write anything on the work WhatsApp that you wouldn’t want HR or management to read.
We had a group for the staff in our team, no management, just a mates at work group. It was just pictures of dogs/kids, and to let people know if there was a change and they needed to know quick. Unfortunately someone in that trusted group showed something I wrote to a manager, and I got told off. I honestly thought it was a private, mates having a laugh group, but not so.

I found that out the hard way too.

It was incredibly underhand how it was done, so I trust no-one

tiger2691 · 04/06/2024 07:21

As things stand right now and even though everyone apart from the family member concerned says I done the right thing to apply for a Clare's law disclosure I somewhat regret doing it. Said family member denies there is abuse, even though the police turned up at their home in less than 18 hours from the time I submitted my application.

Safeguarding of the family member and their children is/ was paramount. For the time being at least I am now ostracised and estranged from the family member.

Every woman needs an escape fund. I didn't marry thinking it would go wrong but it did. I hope you never need one but you never know.

I absolutely agree that having the means to be financially independent should you need to be is vital. Whether that’s developing or having the skills to work (so going back to work after kids if you can) or having savings etc.

but I’d be so hurt if I found out my partner was keeping savings secret from me or had a pre paid card hidden in case he needed ‘to run’. That’s not a partnership I want to be in. And vice versa. I have savings and investments separate from my partner but he knows about them.

Check the expiry on all your giftcards regularly. Lost a painful amount on a John Lewis gift card that had fallen down the back of a unit.

I had the same experience on some wedding gift cards from John Lewis, and I emailed them explaining and thteybwere kind enough to resend some out. Worth a try!

gardenmusic · 04/06/2024 07:33

They are your customers/clients, not your friends.
However nice, however much you get on, this is a business arrangement.
This is particularly important if they stand between you and the decision maker.

gardenmusic · 04/06/2024 07:36

If you are conscientious, excellent at your job and gain targets early, this does not always make your boss look good.

litlleseahorse · 04/06/2024 07:47

Never put garlic in your ear to cure an ear infection despite what TikTok tells you.

It can fall into your ear canal and then you have to have it removed at A&E by a paediatrician because apparently, only kids are stupid enough to put things in their ears.

So I've heard anyway 😉

If you've got a fungal toe nail, neat tea tree oil for a couple of weeks every day (on clean feet) will more than likely cure it.

NOt a cautionary tale - just good advice.

Edited

Poor outdated advice.
From a professional point of view, Tea tree has in fact been taken off the nhs NICE guidelines for causing skin irritation in many people, and it is not a proven anti fungal.
Curanail, together with proper preparation of the nail will sort most fungal infections.

Never ignore little red flags when buying a house, we did, assumed neighbour could just be ignored. Turned out to be a nightmare, biggest nightmare of our entire lives with police involvement, major harassment, him calling in favours from people in power to intimidate us.

The only sign we had was neighbour ALWAYS being around when we viewed, outlining where he thought our fence should go, & saying he would be walking up & down a piece of scrubland at the foot of our garden. It did worry us but we thought he isn't a direct neighbour & he'll get used to us living there (house had been empty for some while). Nope, that didn't happen. He carried on being a major nightmare.

I bet I’m the 100th person to write this but there is not a 10% tolerance. I did a speed awareness course just last month - we were all within 2-5 miles of the speed limit.

The first thing the facilitator said was ‘sooooo who thought there was a 10% tolerance?!’

I think the tolerance is in the police recording device. It legally can not over read your speed so most are set to under read. If you were caught doing 33 in a 30 zone you were probably doing 36.

The amount of people who don’t get the 4 grandparents comment fuck me

I didn't get it until it was explained. I didn't know any of my GPS, they all died before I was born. I have also never lied to get a day off work. Mind you, I was self employed for most of my working life si wouldn't have believed myself anyway

When you sell a car and inform the DVLA by sending off the tear off section of V5, make sure you get acknowledgement from DVLA. This is mentioned ON THE BACK OF THE SLIP YOU HAVE SENT TO THEM!
I got fined - despite completing the correct paperwork - because either the Royal Mail (or more likely) the DVLA cocked up. So old car was still registered to me.

This can all be done online now. My DH likes to buy an old car every few years, privately, and does all this before he leaves the sellers house.

Neverstophulaing · 04/06/2024 08:15

Love is never enough.

The mark of a good relationship is not how great things on when things are going smoothly, it’s how well you are both able to resolve things when there is disagreement. If you can’t do this constructively, leave. Love really is never enough. You need so much more to make a relationship work.

gardenmusic · 04/06/2024 08:19

Read the instructions on your prescription medication.
For many years I have taken my levothyroxine with a coffee in one hand and a breakfast bar in the other.
Recently supplied with a different brand, I read the instructions. No caffeine or food for 30 mins after taking the medication...
