Can't visit friend as her dog is racist

CaliforniaCookie · 31/05/2024 19:15

I was making plans to visit one of my best friends.
She is white and I'm mixed race.

She told me she was concerned as her new dog who i haven't met, is racist.

Anytime he sees a person who is not white he goes mental.

This is honestly not a fake post.

Not sure how to respond. Advice welcome.

I had a racist German Shepherd. He got over it when we moved to a more diverse area and had black friends in and out of the house.

I now have a rescue who does not like Pakistani women who dress traditionally. I live in an area with a huge Pakistani population and it is not good.

I wonder if it’s movement of loose fabric that unnerves him/her? Mine is terrified of plastic bags, think just because they seem out of control (and I guess fair enough really as they’re practically the same size as him and face height).

It's Northerners the dog hates.
Practise saying "not bloody likely!" and "ow much?!" just to let her get used to it.
A diet of pork scratchings and warm beer may also help.
You're welcome.

Bog off! 🤣🤣🤣

TabithaTimeTurn3r · 31/05/2024 20:00

Well I’m pleased to say my dog is tolerant of everyone <preens>

My pug is racist. We have to turn the tv over he goes berserk. He also doesn't like judge rinder 🙄

wiffles · 31/05/2024 20:06

Not people but my dog absolutely hates ack French bull terriers. It's very specific.

Dogs are not and cannot be racist. As a PP said, something has happened to the dog in the past that means it is either afraid or confused.

It can be trained out, but the owner needs to put in some effort, possibly with your help OP?

Sorry I have to disagree. I live in the north east and I have had two dogs who reacted to black people - mainly on the TV. Of course it's not racist it's simply an animal who is unfamiliar with a different looking human being to what they have always known. The same as they'd possibly react to someone in fancy dress.

Oh my god - is that because he's antisemitic, or just anti barrister?.

I know a small terrier who hates little white dogs and a retriever who doesn’t like black dogs.

Ours doesn’t like large blonde dogs. Presumably had a bad experience! (Adopted at 6)

My aunt used to have a “racist” dog. She was badly abused by people of Pakistani decent. This meant that if she saw anyone of this descent, she became aggressive. Sucked really cos my aunt lives in Peterborough in a heavy Pakistani area.

bagheera92 · 31/05/2024 20:09

@Corinthiana
I think it's the bright blonde hair ! He's well socialized and has been since he was a puppy. He's a bit "quirky"

Tiredanddistracted · 31/05/2024 20:09

Can 100% see the people who don't own dogs here.

Also the subset: people who do own dogs but are tediously literal.

My dog, too, has a Kill List, including men, people of colour, leaves skittering in the street, motorcycle helmets, hi vis jackets and the soup maker.

I call her racist, but I quite clearly don't actually think she is. It's just short-hand.

Soubriquet · 31/05/2024 20:09

Not a chihuahua btw. She was an Akita

JamSandle · 31/05/2024 20:10

My old dog was racist too. It's so embarrassing!

fieldsofbutterflies · 31/05/2024 20:11

My beagle is absolutely petrified of Morris Dancers. He'd never seen any until last weekend and if I hadn't had a good grip on his lead and collar he'd have bolted off up the road.

ItsFuckingBoringFeedingEveryoneUntilYouDie · 31/05/2024 20:12

Dogs aren't racist.

They are poorly socialised.

I assumed it was clothing but he was used to seeing people dressed this way from an early age. Unfortunately a few months ago he ran barking at a Pakistani lady who had no head covering and was wearing jeans. He had walked past her dozens of times before.

The other dog walkers wear full length coats in winter and dresses / skirts in the summer.

He is obviously on lead now but still stares and has lunged at a lady whilst I was talking to her. It’s embarrassing as I can’t stop and chat or walk with them for a few minutes.

We are working on it.

It's not necessarily poor socialisation - it could be a negative experience of some kind.

It’s a fucking dog.

it probably has four brain cells and they are all concerned with food, wee and chasing the cat. There really isn’t any more capacity there for anything else.

Yeah, those fucking dogs with their 4 brain cells who can be trained in fire & rescue, police work, drugs detection, cadaver trained, bomb detection, diabetes control, helping the blind, helping autistic children, used as reading dogs in schools, the list goes on. Not bad for 4 brain cells.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 31/05/2024 20:15

If non-white people are unfamiliar, maybe the dog is barking because it’s frightened. My old dog (admittedly a bit of a wuss) was very scared of, and barked at various unfamiliar things, inc. a) a fat woman jogging in a bright green tracksuit, b) a policeman in a traditional helmet, and c) a Halloween pumpkin’s face!

CaliforniaCookie · 31/05/2024 20:16

Thankyou everyone, you have really made me laugh. I am glad this is actually quite a regular occurrence.
Just to clarify - SHE is Northern, I am Southern!

I will message her back and say I am willing to attempt the visit. I have a can of pet corrector that i used on my dog to stop his barking and I am quite a stern person when it comes to dog training. I am sure even if we can't overcome her dogs aversion to coloured people, she can lock it away in another room for the duration of my visit and I will try not to take it personally 😶
