Can't visit friend as her dog is racist

CaliforniaCookie · 31/05/2024 19:15

I was making plans to visit one of my best friends.
She is white and I'm mixed race.

She told me she was concerned as her new dog who i haven't met, is racist.

Anytime he sees a person who is not white he goes mental.

This is honestly not a fake post.

Not sure how to respond. Advice welcome.

Racist might not be the right word but dogs can react like this to something which is unusual to them. My dog reacts to people with disabilities which is very embarrassing.

Is this a wind up and you’re all in on it?

I know right !

Emmeline1894 · 31/05/2024 19:29

My dog is scared of very obese people. I think it’s the way of walking. Whatever it is, she’s an absolute embarrassment.

Spirallingdownwards · 31/05/2024 19:29

Report them to DR (HR🤪)

This is a thing! I mean , you can’t say an animal has racist views - let’s be realistic! But I mean dogs that take a dislike to skin colours . I think it could be many reasons - some dogs have just never seen people with any skin colour other than the skin colour of their owners , or it could be a case of a previous experience of abuse at the hands of someone of a certain skin colour.

When I was younger , we got a lovely little dog from the dogs home . He was such a lovely little thing - so calm and loving . I can’t remember the breed , but he was a teeny fluffy little thing . Yet when my brothers friend , who was black , came around - he went wild ! He would bark , growl , show his teeth ! His friend used to joke that he was racist and we just thought maybe he had been abused by someone who looked similar . Then I had a friend come around , who was also black , and the same thing happened . So it couldn’t have been that he reminded my dog of a specific person that had abused him ( a male ) as my friend was female - the only thing we could think of was that maybe it was a black person who had abused him . We didn’t think it was just because he had only seen white people as he had been in a dogs home , so I highly doubt he had only seen white people there .

My dog, who happily ignores most people as he plods about living his doggy life, absolutely loves black men. Every time he sees a black man he's desperate to go over and make friends with them and pulls on the lead like a train. Luckily he's a daft, friendly lovebug and most people are more than happy to scratch his ears but it's a little embarrassing when he suddenly makes a determined beeline for a random bloke.

He's a rescue so I've no idea where his preferences come from.

elevens24 · 31/05/2024 19:30

I'm not sure it is a wind up. My friends dog was a rescue and if they saw someone with glasses they freaked out.

KikiShaLeeBopDeBopBop · 31/05/2024 19:30

I have read that some dogs can be reactive to people of colour - apparently its because they find their features harder to distinguish/read.

No idea how true it actually is/whether it's a load of racist bollocks or not.

My dog hated males.. maybe because she was brought up in a house of females

My dog is exactly the same. Hes 2 and has only ever spent time with me and my 2 DC and my female friends,

Yesterday I had a plumber round and a few hours later my friends partner moved my washing machine for me and both times the dog was hysterically barking at them.

The plumber didnt want to enter my house because he didnt know the dog was in his crate, he was a huge guy too

NuffSaidSam · 31/05/2024 19:32

My dog is sexist. And doesn't like people with any kind of headwear so she's also against Muslim women in headscarves and Sikh men in turbans.

Surely, you can meet your friend away from her dog though?

LordPercyPercy · 31/05/2024 19:32

Dogs are totally like this, in both directions depending on what they are used to.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 31/05/2024 19:34

I know someone with a racist dog. Seems to be a thing.

was fixable via food bribery- you could offer to turn up with a whole tub of roast chicken (bones removed) and be the fabulous type of human who just keeps handing over chunks of chuck for no good reason other than making the association in the dogs mind that people of colour are providers of high value treats and worth being lovely to just in case they’ve got a load of spare chicken about their person.

LatteLady · 31/05/2024 19:34

My granny had a dog who my mother told me always barked at Protestants... this was in Ireland in the 1930/40s, apparently he was beside himself when the Church of Ireland vicar appeared!

scratchyfannyofcocklane · 31/05/2024 19:34

My dearly departed westie was the same. He also barked at anyone wearing a hat! It was very embarrassing...

ActualCannibalShiaLeBeouf · 31/05/2024 19:35

I actually read that dogs don't like other dogs who are black. Something to do with not being able to make out their facial features so can't tell if they're a threat or not. We have a mainly black dog and other dogs always have a go. Unfortunately she's a feisty little thing and gives as good as she gets

WineIsAFruitRight · 31/05/2024 19:35

Owner of a racist lab here! Bloody mortifying, especially as my son's best friend is Indian. No idea why!

BewaretheIckabog · 31/05/2024 19:35

I had a racist German Shepherd. He got over it when we moved to a more diverse area and had black friends in and out of the house.

I now have a rescue who does not like Pakistani women who dress traditionally. I live in an area with a huge Pakistani population and it is not good.

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 31/05/2024 19:35

Via work, I've visited a place where the big dogs were trained to be racist it transpired.

I heard of another staff member going in with the police and that dog was trained to attack people dress all in black ie police officers - this was years ago

I felt sorry for the dogs and this is why I advocate dog licences where propectiver owners have to sit an exam and if they pass they take a re-test every 5 years or sooner if concerns are reported.

tkwal · 31/05/2024 19:36

I'm no expert but I always believed dogs vision was monochrome and not only that but not all white people are pale, skin colours, whatever your race ,skin tone varies

JeepJeepJeep · 31/05/2024 19:36

My dalmatian only likes spotty people.

Theyhadsomehoneyandplentyofmoney · 31/05/2024 19:37

My friend dog goes crazy when she sees tall men with beards.

OhmygodDont · 31/05/2024 19:37

Mum has a rescue dog that lived chained to a radiator and beaten if it messed in the house… wonder why.

Dog would go nuts at all Asian people.

Flickersy · 31/05/2024 19:38

My dog did this once. Went bonkers barking at some poor man (who was not white) just out for a walk. We didn't live in a multicultural area and obviously the dog didn't come into town with us so she hadn't had any exposure to anyone who wasn't light skinned.

It was absolutely mortifying. Up until that point I hadn't even realised it could even be a thing.

LoveSandbanks · 31/05/2024 19:38

Grasshopper75 · 31/05/2024 19:23

My rescue dog used to bark at any non white people because she hadn't ever seen them before. She also barked at people in wheelchairs and on crutches etc as it was unfamiliar to her and she felt threatened. She's much better now as we've exposed her to more people, but it's been bloody embarrassing and awkward at times!

My dog went nuts once at a bloke that had no legs in a wheelchair. The time that someone came out of the sea in a wetsuit will be etched on my mind forever. I think she thought aliens had landed.

What the hell have I just read 😂
