Do I pay double rent?

Need to decide by tomorrow, help!

I houseshare with a friend and she wants to leave end of June, as planned.
I've had a crazy few months at work and am supposed to be moving to Scotland with partner. I can't decide whether to leave with friend end of next month or pay all the rent myself so I can stay and chill for the month of July.
Reasons against: it will be an EXTRA £1000 for all her share of rent and bills which I can afford but is damn expensive
Reasons for: gives me an extra month to get organised, I've been really stressed lately, I live somewhere where the summer is brilliant (think Cornwall)

WWYD?
YANBU=Pay up and stick around for July
YABU=Leave next month

Both leave at the same time. The responsibility to ensure the house is 100% as it should be then lies with both of you, instead of just you. Plus if you haven't got ready to go in 4 weeks, it's not going to BE a holiday as you will be getting organised and planning etc and doing it totally on your own.

Make sure your friend does their share of end of tenancy cleaning.

DontCheetoTheCheetah · 31/05/2024 08:20

My friend is a lovely person and has already said she wants to do the cleaning together and wants to be at the inventory checkout (personally I was just going to drop the keys through the post box)

Could you AirBnB her room for the month?

andfinallyhereweare · 31/05/2024 08:50

Sorry edited because I posted on wrong thread

I'd love to but would feel sooooo cheeky!

Toss a coin, heads you stay, tails you leave. If you’re gutted with the side that comes up, you know which you really want to do.🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️

similarminimer · 31/05/2024 10:56

It's a month's holiday in cornwall for 1000!

Also there's no rrason why you cant give 6 week's notice tomorrow, surely? Have you asked the agent?

FinallyHere · 31/05/2024 11:39

If you can afford the £1,000, I'd do it and consider it a worth while holiday.

Making your life easier in a healthy way is in my book a very good use of money , esp if you don't need the money for essentials.

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 31/05/2024 12:04

@DontCheetoTheCheetah if you move, you can always treat yourself to 7 new umbrellas, one for every day of the week! be prepared for 4 seasons in one day, literally!! we dont get many good summers up here!

Is this a thing???! That would be a game changer! I thought it was one month end of story.

I would stay and see if any friends want to use the spare room for a holiday and chip into extra rent given as will be cheaper for them too.

There's no harm in asking! They may be very happy to get six weeks' notice instead of a month - less pressure on them to get new tenants lined up, surely?

similarminimer · 31/05/2024 13:40

It's a month minimum notice - not maximum!

ilovepixie · 31/05/2024 14:34

Where would you move to before Scotland?

susey · 31/05/2024 16:59

Even for one month's notice you should've given that today for 1 July imo

Skippydoodle · 31/05/2024 17:21

You can give an extended notice. So tomorrow you could for example give 6 weeks notice. As long as you give the minimum (1month) that would be fine. That would be the best of both worlds I have several rental properties and tenants have done this with me in the past

why? why not just say Cornwall, you're not going to be identified.
This phrase of think cycling, think USA, just say it!!!!
