I cannot stand Trump. That started way, way back when he had that stupid TV show. Never watched it, but the commercials were way too irritating. He confuses scruples for scabies and is proud of not having any.

That said, I find it quite humorous when I see Trump flayed alive for paying off Stormy Daniels and lying about it, yet excuse Clinton, who suborned perjury, among his many sins. Trump will be tried for inciting the Capitol uprising, but people scoff at taking seriously the things Democrat leaders said that helped incite the "Summer of Love" that resulted in deaths, destruction, attempted murders of dozens of LEO. Trump has done nasty stuff to people, no doubt. Biden destroyed most of a man's life because of lies he told. Trump has lied about his accomplishments. So has Biden. Trump had extramarital affairs that were tried by the press. Someone accused Biden and told people when it happened, and she was nothing but vilified for it.

If it wasn't for double standards, many in the USA would have no standards at all.

Either call it all out and punish them all, or let it all go, and we can continue to be stupid.

Of your examples of democrat issues, you do realise that the summer of love was 55 years ago? A bit of a reach.

Sending him to jail would play into his hands. Much better for the judge to say that he doesn't believe DJT has the funds to pay an appropriate level of fines for his crimes and sentence him to a considerable length of time litterpicking or similarly humiliating (in DJTs eyes) community service. He would hate the public statement that he's not well off. I think livestreaming his community service to prove he was really doing it would draw quite an audience.

Let’s just hope it’s “real” community service, like your example of litter picking. We don’t want another “running celebrity golf tournaments” community service like OJ got for domestic violence against Nicole.

I don't think fines are at play in this case. The judge will be limited by sentencing guidelines which, I think (could be wrong), are prison/home incarceration or community service.

As much as I'd enjoy seeing Trump locked up, I do agree that prison wouldn't be a great outcome for many reasons, but Merchan seems like an extremely fair judge (I read a lot of the trial transcripts), so I'd be surprised if he went with incarceration. However, the repeated violations of the gag order, general demeanor in court towards the jurors and complete lack of remorse will not work in Trump's favour.

Adding - the fact that Michael Cohen was sent to prison for the same crime, and spent a month and a half in solitary confinement might also factor in.

It seems wrong to think this, but I wish he'd just die. Heart attack or something, preferably in the next few months. Then we can all move on from the arsewipe that he is.

My God,what a horrible thing to say. You'd deprive his innocent 18yr old son of his father just because you don't like him? Disgusting, and yes, unhinged.

Well, Trump spends an awful lot of time discussing executing his political rivals for treason, and might possibly soon have the means to do so. I haven't heard him espouse much concern for their innocent children?

Before Trump's first term, this was not normal political discourse. He bears responsibility.

@GimmeGin

I can’t comprehend how the USA can’t come up with two better candidates for the presidency.

it’s a massive country. There must surely be better prospects than those two old duffers.

Because you need millions and millions and millions of dollars. It limits the pool significantly.

Perhaps also because the way they have to behave to secure those millions of dollars means that a lot of decent Americans will go nowhere near the process?

Completely off topic, but if I ever went to prison I would only want to be in solitary confinement. Give me some books and it sounds good to me. Being in the general population does not sound fun at all.

It might be better than being a known sex offender in general population like Trump would be. But it would not be "good", you'd soon find yourself losing the plot a bit, no matter how many books they give you.

I think it's one of those things that it makes some sense to think but I wouldn't say it out loud except to my husband (or strangers on the internet?) but I don't think someone was "unhinged" for thinking it. I don't think they were suggesting putting together a mob to go get him (like he did for Pence).

AFAIK Trump kept Melania and Barron on a separate floor of Trump Tower when Barron was a baby and all his kids have said that he never really did Dad stuff like change diapers, throw a ball around, attend their sports events.

WomensRightsRenegade · 31/05/2024 13:55

Any serious person who looked at the details of the charges and the trial would not be celebrating. Far from it. I can’t stand Trump but this is a very dangerous precedent. All those celebrating should be aware that it will massively backfire.

Every other agency of law and government (all anti-Trump) passed on this case as they thought it was absurd. The DA, Bragg, used ‘get Trump’ as part of his election campaign. No one has ever been charged with paying hush money EVER in NY, where soft on crime policies mean rapists and violent criminals go free every day.

It’s not illegal to pay hush money. Rich men have been doing it forever. There needed to be an underlying crime. And no one has specified what that was. The jury was given 4 different options to pick from. And Trump wasn’t told what they were until Wednesday. The defence didn’t get to speak last, and they hardly needed a prosecutor, the judge was so nakedly biased. The trial should never have been held in Manhattan, the most anti-Trump place in the US.

This trial would never have happened to anyone who wasn’t called Donald Trump, and would never have happened (just before the election) if Trump wasn’t a presidential nominee.

Rejoice all you want, but you’re not on the right side of anything here. Biden only escaped charges recently because he was labelled a ‘confused old man’. He showered with his pubescent daughter against her will, and has enriched his son and other family members to the tune of millions. A supine press has given him a free pass on everything - including his history (and v recent, some of it) of egregious racism. He is currently circumventing a ruling of the Supreme Court who told him he couldn’t wipe billions of dollars of student loans (pass them onto working class people).

The worst thing is that this has crossed a rubicon in a country already fatally and divided by a clearly senile Biden and his whipping up of hate towards people who don’t vote for him. Just the other week he told black graduates they had no chance of succeeding in America that white people hated them. EVERYTHING is about hate, division and cynical identity politics (see also ‘trans’ obsession and the elimination of women’s rights under Title IX - which I wonder how many UK women are even aware of)

Now watch and see Republicans think ‘fair’s fair’ and bring charges against Obama, Bill and Hillary for matters such as Afghanistan, deleted emails and so much more.

Only those with a very basic grasp of American politics (and that is most people in the UK) and those who can’t see past their own ‘orange man bad’ blind tribalism could be celebrating this.

I would suggest you actually read the Hur report rather than the media frenzy around it. That's not what it says at all.

And, no, hush money isn't illegal. Federal campaign finance violations are. That's what the jury found. And for what it's worth, I am a serious person.

He wasn't charged with paying hush money. It's the campaign finances violations that are criminal, which Michael Cohen has already been tried and convicted for. And white collar crime gets successfully prosecuted all the time. See Martha Stewart. Not to mention that is usually how they manage to incarcerate Mobsters -- usually white collar crime like tax evasion, etc.

The US still has to pay the price of not rejecting slavery in it's foundation.

The stench of hypocrisy of a revolution for "freedom" that allowed it to continue with slavery long after it had been found abhorrent in the rest of the world is what started the first civil war.

And if there is to be a second civil war, it's because the first was fudged.

It should come as little surprise to people who read that history tends to follow geography. Always has.

Right now it's up for Americans to decide if their legal system works. Or doesn't. If it doesn't then why should anyone have any faith in any of it ?
