Expensive Watches?

Do you know anyone who wear an expensive watch today like Rolex for example?

Even if I was wealthier I would never buy an expensive watch.
Don't wear a watch anyway.
What a magnet for thieves?
What a worry, wondering where you have put it, being careful not to lose it etc?
Most people look at their phones today I would have thought as well?
Absolutely hate anything on my wrist.
Are they for show-offs?

My husband has a Rolex, it's absolutely to show off 😂

Icequeen01 · 30/05/2024 17:41

My sister has a beautiful watch (not Rolex) which cost thousands. It's beautiful but she would never take it on holiday with her in case it got lost/stolen. It was bought as my dad died and left us both some money. She wanted to buy something to remember him by. This watch will also increase in value so is an investment which I am guessing will go to her granddaughter one day.

Verv · 30/05/2024 17:46

Yes, I wear expensive watches.
I also wear inexpensive watches.

No, I'm not a show off and I'm always in long sleeves.
No, I'm not worried about losing them.

Anybody owning anything these days is a magnet for thieves, but I'm no more of a magnet than someone with a mobile phone or an eccessible handbag or back pocket.

I do not want to look at a phone to tell the time, I want a little masterpiece of mechanical engineering on my wrist because it makes me happy, so happy in fact that I've made a career out of them, so no, they're not a waste of money either.

You don't have to buy or wear an inexpensive watch if you don't want to.

Almostwelsh · 30/05/2024 17:50

I have a Rolex. I wear it every day because there is no point having something and not using it. If it gets lost, stolen or broken, well I've had 13 years of daily use of it, so be it.

I wear it because I love it. I'm not especially wealthy. I don't generally wear designer clothes and my most expensive handbag is a Radley. But as soon as I tried on the Rolex it blew me away.

RipleyGreen · 30/05/2024 17:54

I used to wear a Rolex. I appreciated the craftsmanship of it. I guess you think they’re for ‘show-offs’? Do you think anything of value for ‘show-off’ value only? A work of art, say?

Devilsmommy · 30/05/2024 17:55

More likely to find a timex 😂

Sdpbody · 30/05/2024 17:57

My dad has 8 Rolex's.

5 are new in box and worth twice as much as he paid for them. He could sell them tomorrow and have 5 buyers.

3, he wears regularly- one will be mine, one will be my brothers and one is left to my DC.

My brother and I were given Tag watches on our wedding days.

I have no interest in watches, but my DDqd loves them. He has been on many watch making courses and finds them to be interesting and fascinating. To him, it is more mastery of work than for showing off.

CuttingMeOpenthenHealingMeFine · 30/05/2024 17:57

My DH loves watches but we can’t quite stretch to a Rolex or anywhere near as fancy for him unfortunately. He would have one if he could and yes it would be to show off.

I just couldn’t have anything that expensive that was so small tbh my Apple Watch feels too expensive for me and I lose it at least once a day as I’m always taking it off and don’t even ask me where my wedding ring is!

GrazingSheep · 30/05/2024 18:01

I have a Patek Phillipe. I rarely wear it - prefer my Apple Watch.

BotterMon · 30/05/2024 18:07

I have an expensive watch that I bought when I had a big promotion 30 years ago. It's still as beautiful as the day I bought it and works just as well. My DD will inherit it. I wore it every day when I worked but now retired I only wear it on high days and holidays as no longer need to wear a watch or any other jewellry.

LongSinceGotUpAndGone · 30/05/2024 18:07

I don't wear an expensive or 'smart' watch; I just need it to tell the time reliably and not bring me out in a rash. I'm not interested in Rolexes but if I was a billionaire I might buy one of these for £130k😃

Dh has just bought me a very beautiful and expensive Omega. TBH I was resistant to getting a watch like that, but when reframed as part of my jewellery instead of something to tell the time with I now love wearing it - not as an everyday watch with my lifestyle, but if I put anything nicer than leggings on I wear it

amijustbeingsuspicious · 30/05/2024 18:10

I have a very fancy watch which I used to use every day and then I got an Apple watch and it changed my life but I do miss wearing my nice watch sometimes.

it’s just pleasant to wear something beautiful. Same with my engagement ring and other jewellery - it’s not about showing off.

OneTC · 30/05/2024 18:12

I have a Rolex but I don't like wearing a watch so it stays at home.

I might wear it if I'm dressing more formally

madmumofteens · 30/05/2024 18:14

I got a Rolex for a big birthday from my DH who is a watch fan I wear it everyday I don't think anyone has noticed tbh

museumum · 30/05/2024 18:16

My friend inherited his father’s Rolex. My dh got one when he qualified in his profession. It expensive at the time but only three figures not four, it’s gone up in value since.

Pinkypinkyplonk · 30/05/2024 18:20

I have a Cartier tank. I’ve worn it every day for 23 years! It still looks brand new. Needs a new cheap battery ( £6) every 3 years, I’ve never had it serviced, so cost per wear is now practically zero. And more importantly I still absolutely love it. I never look at other watches!

Notsuchafattynow · 30/05/2024 18:24

I wear a Rolex, and I love it. It's vintage and very subtle. No one has ever remarked on it.

AffIt · 30/05/2024 18:31

I wear a Longines Grand Master every day and think of it as functional jewellery.

I love it: I bought it for myself as a 'grown-up' birthday present.

I couldn't give a shit what anybody else thinks and I'm probably more at risk of having my smartphone ripped out of my hand or my bag pulled off my shoulder than having a watch stolen.

LightDrizzle · 30/05/2024 18:52

I’ve worn a watch since I was 6 and don’t personally find a phone any kind of substitute for a quick glance at my wrist.

I’ve never clicked with the aesthetics of Rolex so wouldn’t buy one but I have an expensive watch: a stainless steel Cartier Tank Francais that my mum very kindly bought me for my 40th; and a luxury watch I bought myself. 99% of people wouldn’t have a clue the luxury watch is expensive as it isn’t blingy but I find the workmanship and history of horological amazing and have an interest in mechanical music that dovetails so it brings me joy. I wore the Tank daily for 13 years but I’m still infatuated with the newish watch so wear that most of the time currently. The Tank does look lovely though and has sentimental value so it will get worn.

I never buy things to keep in drawers or safes. I wear things. I could easily get the itch to get another watch but I stop myself as I’d hate not to wear each of them frequently. I also have a Tag Aquaracer Professional 200 solar for swimming and water sports and like activities. That’s enough watches for me. All three are sufficiently different from each other for me to be able to justify it to myself. I’d class the Tank as a jewellery or fashion watch, it’s a quartz mechanism; the Tag is a sports watch; and the third, which is the only one with a leather strap, is a high quality automatic (self-winding) movement with moon phase and complete calendar complications. All very different.

Watches, like rings, are something you yourself see hundreds of times in a day so for me they are worth spending money on as I like them. I don’t buy designer clothes because for me it’s just not worth it, they wouldn’t look amazing on me and I’d only see them on the hanger or when I look in a mirror. I appreciate beautiful cars but not enough to buy one. I totally get other people making different choices though.

Smartphones cost no wear near as an expensive watch.
Anyone with an expensive piece of jewellery is vulnerable. People have been known to rip chains from people's necks.

My dad had a Rolex. He’d never have bought one, he dressed like a tramp 😂 but he inherited it from his dad who was a lot more flash. It was a very early example of the one with the red and blue bezel, I always guess the wrong name. Mum very kindly offered it to my DH many years after Dad died but he gratefully refused it as he’s not a fan either and it seemed wrong to accept it just because of monetary value. It’s such a shame because it was stolen from her house in her latter years. I wish I’d asked her to let me sell it for her as will have been worth a small fortune. It just seemed a bit disrespectful at the time.

I think watch thieves mainly target men wearing Rolex, Audemars Piguet Royal Oak or Patek Philipe Nautilus or Aquanaut watches as they are easily spotted and have a strong second hand market. Men still buy the majority of luxury watches.

It has become a problem in some cities in recent years but you are safe in most places and I wear my best watch in London all the time but as I say, it’s not blingy and I probably don’t look the type you’d expect to have an expensive watch. I’m not particularly well put together 😂

StripedPiggy · 30/05/2024 19:15

DP owns a Rolex GMT Master, the black & blue ‘Batman’ model. He has had it for many years & used to wear it all the time, but it started to attract the wrong sort of attention from the wrong sort of people eg ‘naaaaice watch, bruv. How much is it worf?’ 🙄 so he rarely wears it now.

cashmerecardigans · 30/05/2024 19:23

I have a Rolex and wear it every day, although it's quite a simple one and doesn't shout Rolex or expensive watch. As above, I don't see the point of having such a lovely thing and not wearing it
